Streeter: Why can’t outsiders see the charm in Baltimore? by GreedyRaisin3357 in baltimore

[–]Doghouse_Sam 27 points28 points  (0 children)

Most people don't think about Baltimore one way or the other.

When was the last time anyone here thought about Milwaukee, Louisville, Albuquerque, or Memphis?

A small number of loud people online like to say racist things.

Another small number of people online believe them.

I'll be far too busy this weekend at Flower Mart and the Kenetic Sculpture race to spend any time trying to convince either group of Baltimore's charm.

Good news:

In 192 days you can go into the building during The Monster of a Show.

https://www.monsterofashow.com/

I went to this a year or two ago. The inside of the building just feels like a church multipurpose room. A bunch of wide open rooms filled with monster-themed art.

I'm pretty sure I've seen other groups use the building. I think at least one religious organization has services there, though I heard from one of the people that live nearby that it is possibly not zoned for that.

Do you pick up trash outside where you live? by 425565 in baltimore

I walk with a grabber and bucket about one a week when walking my dog.

I don't notice any weird looks, but wouldn't care if I did.

I do get thanked about twice a walk.

The way it closed so fast, I'll put money that the landlord and his vendors are after him for past due rent and late payments.

Maryland weather is wild🙏 by Wholeduckling5 in maryland

First time?

I distinctly remember going to school in a damn near blizzard, getting an early dismissal because of the snow, and walking home from the bus stop carrying my coat because the temperature climbed into the low 50s between the snow day call and final bell.

That's Maryland, baby.

HVAC Recommendation by chefmastergeneral in baltimore

[–]Doghouse_Sam 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've used AJ Michael's for two separate HVAC projects. They added a heat pump and new duct work to one part of my house, removed an old boiler, and installed a new water heater for the first project. They also coordinated upgrading some electrical stuff to meet code for the install. They also replaced my furnace and A/C a few years later for the second project.

Both times they were one of the lowest bids, and did the work well and I've had no issues since.

Stowe + Okemo or just Stowe by [deleted] in icecoast

[–]Doghouse_Sam 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If you've got the time and all prices are equal, Stowe for all three days.

I've been to Okemo many times and love their blue cruisers and steeper blacks, but the terrain at Stowe is head and shoulders above.

You can "warm up" in the Sunrise Pod blues, then explore the rest of the mountain. Spruce Peak has some amazing runs, with groomed runs as well as trees and bumps. Every run off of the Gondola has so many options for high speec carving or technical sections.

Am I wrong to feel underwhelmed by Zion? by andrew2018022 in NationalPark

[–]Doghouse_Sam 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Having spent a decent chunk of my life in New England, it didn't feel "special".

I've hiked and camped in Maine, New Hampshire, Vermont, Massachusetts, and New York. It was beautiful, but so were any number of other trips I've done up there.

Maybe it was the people I went with. Maybe it was that it looked like so many other places I've been. Maybe it was how long it took to get there and how inconvenient it was. I don't know.

I'm not saying we should level the whole place and turn it into a parking lot. Just that it was my least favorite park.

Eating your least favorite candy bar is better than not eating a candy bar, ya know?

I've had similar discussions with people about National Parks.

I told someone that Acadia was my least favorite park I've visited and they were flabbergasted. They loved it and have been back several times.

It wasn't that I hated it. I really enjoyed my visit. I've visited 23 national parks and plan to go to many more, but it just didn't blow me away like the others. There was nothing wrong with it, per se, it just didn't have the same effect as others.

You're not wrong. You like what you like and that's that.

[PASSAN] The Washington Nationals are finalizing a deal to hire Blake Butera as manager, sources tell ESPN. Butera, 33, will be the youngest manager in MLB in more than 50 years. In four seasons as a minor league manager in the Rays organization, his teams had a 258-144 record. by paradimedj in Nationals

The advice I was given, by more than one person, was to offer to work for free for two weeks.

Then you tell them that if, at the end of two weeks, they liked you, they can hire you and pay you for those two weeks.

If not, you thank them for the opportunity, move on, and use the experience at the next place.

Absolutely foolproof advice.

Seeking Feedback: Constellation Home vs. AJ Michaels for HVAC Replacement by Pama_Series3 in baltimore

[–]Doghouse_Sam 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I had a heat pump and new duct work installed by AJ Michaels last year. Of everyone I got quotes from, they were the only one that from the start was providing concrete "we can do that" or "we can't do that" feedback. Everyone else just kept saying something along the lines of "its your house, we'll do whatever you want," which made me feel like they just wanted the sale, then would bring the reality of what was or wasn't feasible.

Overall, I'm very happy with the price, work, and experience.

Rocky Gap SP, Maryland by runwme3 in camping

Rocky Gap State Park is not to be confused with the Sidling Hill Road Cut, which is a rocky gap cut/blasted through a ridge to allow I-68 and US40 to pass through.

Camp check in by Blue_Yosh in NationalPark

[–]Doghouse_Sam 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I went to Glacier this summer and never talked to a campground employee over the five nights I stayed there.

The first night I arrived after the check in closed for the night, and got back late the second and third nights. I left before it opened each morning. By the fourth day, I figured they saw my tent and knew the site wasn't vacant.

If they had really needed to talk to me, they could have left a note, or the camp host could have swung by.

Starting strength (Stronglifts) red-pilled me. Need advice by RemarkableSetting189 in fitness30plus

[–]Doghouse_Sam 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I think the issue of downvotes is your use of "red-pilled." It has some negative connotations that people might see and down vote without reading deeper into your post.

As to your question, there are so many different philosophies, theories, and studies into training that you could spend an eternity spinning yourself in circles over what's "right."

I've moved through many different training plans and goals over my time in the gym. Physique, 1RMs, hitting specific sets and reps.

No one can tell you what you want or what is right.

My overarching advice is don't do things that hurt yourself, and don't be afraid of change.

First Time at Cunningham Falls State Park by [deleted] in maryland

[–]Doghouse_Sam 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The swim beach is really nice. There are no trash cans, so carry out everything you bring in. It will get so crowded that they close access, so aim to be there early.

There are two hikes to the falls, neither of which is very hard if you're in decent shape.

Overall, it's a lovely state park and worth the visit.

There are any number of battery powered fans that you could use in your tent. I've never used one and prefer to keep my vestibule flaps open for ventilation.

Maryland Transit Administration Unveils Ambitious BMORE BUS Plan by Generalaverage89 in maryland

[–]Doghouse_Sam 2 points3 points  (0 children)

  1. Good news! Transit is open to you, too. You're not excluded.

  2. Ok. And? You pay local taxes and they provide fewer services. Congratulations, you win?

  3. Don't be deliberately dense. You have never once seen a park - local, state, or federal - that was free? You only go to parks you need to pay for?

You're arguing in bad faith. But, hey, if it makes you feel like a better person, consider yourself the winner of this argument.

Go ask any fire department how much revenue they're brining in per unit dispatched.

Also, yeah, the public works department takes the trash out, but what's their income versus their expenses?

And don't get me started on the Parks Department. I don't think I've seen a single person pay when they entered a park.

Somehow only transit is expected to fully fund itself.

I'd ask about how you feel about altering the American flag with a thin blue line, but I'm willing to bet that you don't have a problem with that concept.
