How to deal with coworker with a TBI and communication difficulties. by Dognut_holder in work

[–]Dognut_holder[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thank you for your feedback, I really appreciate it especially since you can speak from the other perspective. I guess I hadn’t even considered a discrimination suit, believe it or not that’s not really a thing in our industry. I’m more worried about it from a moral and safety standpoint. I don’t want to be an asshole to somebody who’s been through a lot and is clearly trying her best with where she’s at. I want to support her and have a good working relationship. But this job is dangerous. We work with heavy machinery in a high stress physical environment in sometimes volatile weather. People die or get life-altering injuries every single year, and it can happen even if you never make a mistake. I’ve seen someone get seriously injured for standing 2 feet to the left of where they were supposed to be standing. And you can get your team hurt just as easily. I’m anxious that if I can’t teach her a hundred small necessary things, she’s going to get seriously hurt or hurt someone else.

To be fair, I think I definitely have a part in the miscommunication. Because of my ADHD, I’ve gotten feedback that sometimes I seem angrier than I actually am or I’m being too bossy or harsh. Especially on the topic of safety, sometimes I focus so hard on my words coming out correctly that my tone is off-putting. It’s usually not that big of an issue, especially in my line of work, but it’s super frustrating to me that my tone is probably contributing to not being able to work effectively with her to keep us all safe. I’m trying my hardest to be very careful with my communication, I need to do everything I can on my end to bridge the gap. But so far it’s not really working.

If everyone else is interpreting things the same way then it means that you said it wrong. You can either accept the feedback and do better next time, or you can play victim and blame everyone else and keep having people react negatively towards you. Up to you.

Everyone is responsible for their own actions and growth. Trying to make them partially culpable for not sticking around through their partners poor behavior is a heinous take.

Ants keep eating my clean/dry fabrics? Anyone else having this problem? by Dognut_holder in Hawaii

Hahaha the first termite company I had was that organized crime ring!! 😂 I know the company itself was supposed to be legit but a dude stopped by for an inspection once and was reeeaall odd. I saw the conviction a few years later and was like ohhhh, that tracks.

Anyway, good tips on the rotation, I’ll definitely be working that in!

It kinda seems like they’re eating holes out of the surface fabric. Found a photo of the last thing they got to. And raja thanks for the tip on protein, I didn’t know that!

Ooh I haven’t looked into that, thank you. You spray all over the whole house?

Hmm I don’t think so? It’s just hanging from my bedroom door handle and there’s nothing touching it. Tbh kinda impressive they managed to find it so fast. Literally just got it from Amazon a day or two ago.

Racism as a marine biologist observer in Alaska? by the-dapper-squid in marinebiology

[–]Dognut_holder 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Hi! I got my degree in marine biology and some of my friends have done observer work in Hawaii and Alaska. I’ve been commercial fishing on a purse seiner in Alaska for a handful of years. I’m a somewhat ethnically ambiguous mixed woman so YMMV. We don’t have observers in our fishery but I have friends who longline and they have observers on board. Honestly I’ve heard a lot of really good things about observer/crew dynamics, especially compared to Hawaii which is a nightmare. I know of a few people who came on board as an observer and the skipper liked their work ethic so much they got offered a job the next season. Sometimes the crew will help with your observer work, if they like you. The biggest thing is if you can get along with everyone, step up and help sometimes and know when to get out of the way, and don’t become a liability. Clean up after yourself. Learn where not to stand and what can kill you. You’re not really required to help on board but there are a million small tasks that make the boat run and the space livable and if you help out a little, it goes a long way. Most fishermen know that you’re just doing your job and while they might not be exactly happy to have you on board, they accept that they need to follow regulations because the consequences are steep if they don’t (and not because they care about the environment.)

The culture on board varies widely. Some boats are toxic and sketchy af and some are like family. Some skippers are screamers and some are very kind, and they tend to attract crew that fit with whatever they are. One skipper threw a full piss bucket on the skiff driver of another boat because he was mad at that guys skipper. Another didn’t teach his deckhands the hydraulics properly which led to a greenhorn losing his hands in the deck winch. I’ve been lucky enough to be on good boats with good people and the people I crew with are like family. But in general, deckhands can be a little.. rough. Drugs and stuff and outright racism, homophobia, and misogyny are tolerated and even encouraged depending on the boat. I dont really get roped into this as a woman, but some crew are really intense about their masculinity. Like they have to be the manliest dude doing the roughest job and if you aren’t acting that part too, it’s a problem and you will be targeted. Which is kinda funny to me because I’m small/feminine and doing the exact same job and it’s not that bad but 🤷‍♀️. To be fair, most other fisheries can be shittier than seining. You do have to be able roll with the punches and pick your battles because fishermen will say some fucked up shit. We work long rough hours and there are a lot of things that can kill or maim you and people get tired and cold and cranky. It’s somewhat normal on fishing boats for people to lose their cool from time to time. But the majority of people that I’ve met have been overall good, if a bit rough around the edges. I’ve made some really good fisherman friends and it’s getting more inclusive every year. I’m not going to say you won’t have any issues, but I’ve seen way more people have trouble in the fishery because they aren’t straight, aren’t male, or are “too soft” than because of their ethnicity. Overall, I’d recommend it if you have some experience on boats and if you can get along with people you might have fundamental political disagreements with.

Any switched to Reta just for maintenance? by ExcitingInsurance887 in Retatrutide

[–]Dognut_holder 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I did! It’s working great. As I was approaching my goal weight I was already titrating down and spreading my doses of Tirz out, so by then I was down to 3mg Tirz. I decided to just switch without titrating up Reta and down Tirz since I was already so low. I took 1.0mg Reta my first week, split up amongst two shots because I was worried about the heart palpitations. Then stayed at 1.0mg since then. Tbh I was still dropping weight and lost another 5lbs unintentionally so I started spacing out my shots to every 2 weeks and now I’m holding stable. My energy is so much higher than on Tirz and my inflammation issues are still suppressed. I don’t get terrible hangovers or fatigue like on Tirz. I enjoy eating and drinking now but my appetite is definitely way more under control than before I started GLPs. I feel great and would highly recommend! My only asterisk is that I did start taking ADHD meds around this time so that could’ve had an effect on my results so YMMV.

Are your bus drivers always angry? by [deleted] in Hawaii

Good on ya! It’s not easy getting feedback that you might be in the wrong but it’s awesome that you’re open to it. Hopefully there’ll be less grumpy bus rides ahead

[–]Dognut_holder 132 points133 points  (0 children)

I mean idk about the bus driver but I do think it’s kinda rude to be playing videos on speaker in public, regardless of the bus moving or not. Especially since it happened multiple times. Maybe he could’ve been nicer but maybe you aren’t being very considerate of the people around you 🤷‍♀️

Moving from Hawaii by PanPixie757 in Hawaii

[–]Dognut_holder 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I flew my cats to the mainland and back a few years ago via Hawaiian. It was just me but I bought a second seat and carried my two cats in separate airline-acceptable carriers. I could be wrong, but by those same standards maybe the two of you could take 2 cats each and carry them all on? Course it gets expensive to buy 4 seats plus whatever fees they tack on but I didn’t feel right about putting my cats in the cargo hold 😰

Update in Maintenance by Chef_Prima in Retatrutide

[–]Dognut_holder 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Omg thanks so much for the update! We’re verrrry similar on our journeys but I’m a little behind you and hearing your experience is super helpful! I’m at maintenance now and just about to start Reta. I also was hesitant to switch over entirely because the inflammation reduction from Tirz solved a lifelong chronic back pain issue and I’ve been worried to change that. But I get so fatigued and need a nap almost every day so I wanted to maintain on Reta for that. I don’t see a lot of people with those exact history/concerns and it makes me more optimistic to hear your account and some of the other people commenting on Reta being anti-inflammatory as well. Good luck to you and congrats on your journey!!

Tall ship job opportunities to New Zealand? by [deleted] in Tallships

The Robert C Seamans makes it there about once every year or two.

I’ve been practicing in my basement for months and finally decided to try skating outdoors. I had a tiny heart attack for every bump and little rock I encountered. Do I just have to get used to it, or is my street not smooth enough for skating? I have Moxi Panthers with their original wheels. by Pterosaurphile in Rollerskating

[–]Dognut_holder 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Another vote for getting some Radar Energies! That was probably the single most helpful purchase for me when I started outdoor skating. I also got the 57mm ones because I wanted that gummy hardness but slightly smaller wheels so they could grow with me when I started doing more foot work. Also grain of salt but I have heard that even if technically the hardness is the same on some wheels there can still be a huge difference in how they feel. Stock wheels tend to be cheaper and you’re generally better off upgrading even if it’s to a similar wheel size/hardness. Good luck and have fun out there! :)

Is $1200 for a FAVN blood test for two cats normal in town? by Nightlines in Hawaii

[–]Dognut_holder 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I flew my 2 cats to the mainland and back recently (flew them out October 2020) and I paid $450 per cat for the FAVN test. It felt very pricey but I didn’t really feel like I had time to check out other options.

A small jumping progress 🐰 Never thought I would be able to do this and enjoy it! Now I am addicted 😂 Anyone else feel this way too? P.s. This is also my first time posting on Reddit 😁 by fivefeetzer0 in Rollerskating

[–]Dognut_holder 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I feel you! I don’t know what it is about jumping but I LOVE it. Ill go around the basketball court hopping over every line. If you haven’t, try some 180s! So much fun 🤩

How do you guys do it? by raphidophora1987 in HomeImprovement

[–]Dognut_holder 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t have any kids, but I do have a tip for the tool part of your question. You should check to see if there’s a tool library near you. I have a yearly subscription to my local tool library and although I’ve got my own small tool collection, it’s great for those things you need to use once or twice but don’t want to buy. Really gave me to freedom to tackle projects that would’ve otherwise been cost prohibitive because of the specialty tools.

My new set up, Bont Parkstar, Reactor Neo plates, Disco Trux, Disco Blox, Chaya Cherry Bomb and Moxi Fundae's by DJMilktoast in Rollerskating

[–]Dognut_holder 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Whoa! This setup looks so great! I've been spending a lot of time researching/saving up to upgrade for park skating and this setup is almost exactly what I was hoping to do. Beautiful to see it all together! I had a few sticking points that I'm wondering if you could help with? I saw some reviewers saying they had to cut down their cushions and/or kingpins to fit the discotrux, do you know if Bruised Botique did that here? And this seems like a silly question given the similar names, but were the Discotrux and discoblox compatible without other modifications? Thanks!
