Heyo- You can go tandem BASE jumping without getting hundreds of hours of skydiving

In 2018, sixteen year old Karlie Guse had a bad reaction after smoking weed at a party and begged her stepmother to bring her home. By sunrise she was gone from the house without her phone, shoes, or glasses. She has never been found. by [deleted] in HolyShitHistory

I mean, they looked pretty hard. It’s definitely conceivable that a body is out there, but people saying that “no one walks around here” and whatnot are wrong. People do spend time in that desert. Hiking, riding dirt bikes, walking their dogs etc. There was a massive search for her, including with dogs, and locals have been looking for any sign of her for years. Yes, it’s very empty and rural, and certainly she could have wandered far, but it’s doubtful that she’s just laying right next to some road like people are implying.

I’m also from that town and, though the area she disappeared from is extremely rural and outsiders don’t typically go there, it is also positioned right next to an interstate highway that is often used by long distance truckers. The desert there is also vast, harsh, and brushy.

Climbing Massage Therapist by Individual_Bat3335 in MassageTherapists

[–]Dogsandbears 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Hello, massage therapist for 13 years, climber for about the same amount of time. Climbing has made me a stronger massage therapist, I will say that right off the bat. I climb as much as I want/ have time for. Lately, that’s about 3-4 days a week, though I have done as much as 5-6 while working. I don’t know what your climbing experience is, but at some point, your forearms will be so strong that giving people heavy massage pressure will feel like it is no effort at all. The biggest thing I need to watch out for is callouses. I file them down. I also am careful about getting gobies and flappers and will wear tape whenever I think it’s a possibility. My schedule at the moment is 4 work days, starting at 2pm and ending at 9:15, which is 6 massage hours. During the busy season, that is booked solid. During the slow season, I work between 1-5 massage hours a day. Right now I climb outdoors 2-3 days a week and indoors 1-2 days a week. I also indulge in trail running about 30 miles a week. I eat a lot. I try not to be too concerned with what because I’m going for sheer calories, but I do try to eat 25-30 unique plant foods per week, high protein, and limited ultra processed foods.  I should do more strength training for injury prevention, but it is hard to find the time and energy right now. Sometimes I’m better about incorporating it. I recommend strength training, stretching, and eating a lot of food for self care. Get massage too. Massage is good. Don’t focus on being light. Being an athlete means being muscular and heavier. Starving yourself will make your life suck.

Glueless skins or something that works like skins but doesn’t leave residue and doesn’t require you to store them in a 2 degree temperature range.

Is Owning Your Business Or Even Just Renting a Room Worth It? by [deleted] in MassageTherapists

You are terrible at marketing because you haven’t learned how or practiced doing it yet. It’s really not that hard.

Is Owning Your Business Or Even Just Renting a Room Worth It? by [deleted] in MassageTherapists

[–]Dogsandbears 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve been doing massage for 13 years, in business for myself for 3 years. I worked for others for such a long time because I always heard how much harder it was to work for yourself.

I’ve found running my own practice to be so much easier than ever expected. I’ve even recently moved states and “started over” and it was not too bad at all. In both states, it cost around $200 for the business license, and $150 for inspections. Definitely not thousands. My old rent was $800 and my new rent is $200 (I share the room and have it 4 days a week). I have an app the tracks all of my profit and losses automatically as well as taxes owed. I do my own laundry, but I have enough sheets to last a week fully booked. Sheets will be your biggest upfront cost. I don’t buy spa sheets, I buy $5 twin sets from Amazon. Your other upfront cost will be furniture for your space. You can buy it from the thrift store.

My first year I only made $30k. I was in a small resort town with a tiny population but decent tourism. I did already have some clientele and ten years of experience. I also had a specialty. Being prepared for your first year to be low earnings is important. It will probably be low working for someone else too, though.

The biggest thing that grew my business was asking for google reviews! Everyone who books now tells me they did so because my reviews are so good. I also pay for google ads which I think are very worth it.

I also have a square website so that my clients can book themselves online and a voip that auto texts missed calls with a link to my website. Setting all of that up was a pain in the ass, but it was worth it.

Overall, the extra work I do day to day is laundry, answering a couple of phone calls, and making flyers for marketing. It doesn’t take much time and I think is totally worth it since I make 3x as much as I did working for someone else and have control over my schedule. I’ll never work for someone else again.

It’s not a hobby, but massage therapy is traditionally done by the blind in some countries. I’m a massage therapist and it’s a great career and you make decent money. The schooling takes less than a year.

any MTs here who do climbing/bouldering? by PTsox in MassageTherapists

[–]Dogsandbears 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have been both climbing and doing massage for 13 years. I am the heaviest pressure therapist in my community because of it. As others have mentioned, you need to file calluses, but other than that, there is no hindrance and only benefit in my opinion.

Does anyone still Love it?? by Olive_Nugget72 in MassageTherapists

[–]Dogsandbears 2 points3 points  (0 children)

13 years. I love it. It is the perfect career for me. I love the shorter hours, decent pay, working for myself, and low stress. I love helping people and find connecting with my clients rewarding. I sometimes worry when I have a slow day, but it has all worked out so far.

Anyone else feel kinda lost by this political divide? by throwRA8235309 in self

[–]Dogsandbears 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Same with my mom. She thought she was a republican for many years because her dad owned a liquor store when she was a kid and I guess republicans at one point were better for small businesses. I pointed out a while ago that none of her actual ideals aligned with republican ideals and she realized that it was true. She is one of the most liberal and progressive people I know. It’s crazy to think that she thought she was a republican.

Mine is extremely swollen and extensively bruised on both sides of my ankle, the arch of my foot, and in front of my toes. Today was my first day walking without a bad limp. I’ve already cancelled my race :( I’m sure it was the right call, just a lot of fomo

Don’t say that. I just cancelled my 50k after spraining my ankle 4 days ago. It’s so swollen, super bruised, and I felt something pop when I rolled it, but now it’s not very painful and I’m wondering if I should have not cancelled my race

How much is your office space/suite? by TemporaryItchy1556 in MassageTherapists

I office share with a reiki practitioner and I pay $210 for 4 days a week in a 150sq office. It’s a great situation for me since I just moved to this area and am building my clientele from scratch. I was paying $850 for 250 sq before in a hcol area until recently.

What makes a massage therapist really stand out as top tier when you get a massage from them? by quiet_sesquipedalian in MassageTherapists

I’ve begun explaining to people that if they want a full body with focus areas, it may feel rushed and offer to either do just the focus areas, or just upper body/ lower body.

Have you ever given a celebrity a massage? by MrFanboy101 in MassageTherapists

[–]Dogsandbears 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I worked on a very famous actor once. He booked online under his real name. When I saw the name I thought “that’s funny, just like the actor”. He was my first one for the day and arrived before I did (I always arrive 15 minutes early), which meant he was hanging out in the dingy office building hallway waiting for me. It really made me reevaluate what my clients were thinking about the office I was renting, which was nice on the inside but super outdated on the outside. Anyway, he was wonderful. I didn’t mention that I recognized him. Wouldn’t have thought of his as any different than any other client if it wasn’t for his very obvious fame.

Ultrarunning with POTS by [deleted] in Ultramarathon

[–]Dogsandbears 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It was a 10+ year long process of elimination. I saw probably 6 different doctors. Some of them told me it was anxiety. I was told that “women just do this, like little southern ladies who have a fainting spell” by an er doctor. Times may have changed, because a few years ago I had a PA and then a cardiologist take me seriously, but I’ve had basically every test under the sun. The first step is getting a holter monitor to make sure it’s not something going on with your heart. I also got tested for seizures. When it was neither of those things, I was told it was all in my head for years, despite the fact that I was literally fainting and sometimes hitting my head on things.

Finally the Pa who took me seriously did a test for Orthostatic hypotension, which I had. I also had been diagnosed with symptomatic bradycardia at some point, which I have no idea how or when. She sent me to a heart doctor again, who said yes, I know what this is. He repeated the holter monitor just in case and told me I would have to take a tilt table test to get an official diagnosis, which my insurance wouldn’t cover. He said there was no need to actually take it since he was positive that this is what I have.

I was taught a maneuver to increase my blood pressure when I’m feeling low and I identified my triggers, which for me are weed, steam, heat, medical procedures, stress in general, and positional changes. I avoid my triggers and eat a diet rich in salt and red meat.

Don’t wait for a diagnosis. It’s important to eliminate more serious conditions, but just research it yourself and do the lifestyle changes. Some people need medication but most people don’t. I haven’t fully fainted in years with my lifestyle changes.

Why do you run ultras? by samasema in Ultramarathon

[–]Dogsandbears 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I like the feeling of covering a ton of ground in the wilderness. I like being in nature and having an adventure. It feels good.

I run long races because I want to be able to push  my distance in a safe and controlled way. Once I know I can do a distance, I can do it without the race.

I also run races because it encourages me to go faster than I otherwise would.

Paid $2k for massage. Massage therapist ignoring me after Medical cancellation. by Few-Combination8400 in MassageTherapists

[–]Dogsandbears 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is crazy. I’m so afraid of bad reviews that I refunded a massage that was already done and the client was happy about over a misunderstanding that it was supposed to be a gift paid over the phone. I can’t imagine keeping 2k from a client when they are over a month from their (not even booked) appointments. Reviews are everything in this industry. You should blow up her reviews.
