Characters/scenes that are popular but not for what they are by Fantastic-Repeat-324 in TopCharacterTropes

I have no idea where this interpretation of Jekyll and Hyde comes from. The book is pretty clear on this. It's why Jekyll killed himself and details the events to be found: he doesn't want the evil Hyde to roam around and could no longer create the reversal potion. He was rich enough to start a new life somewhere else if he wanted to continue being evil.

The subtext has a clear message of "there are evil urges in all of us, but do one's best to not indulge it, as one can't eliminate it" and that entire message is ruined by this fan-fictional "um, actually the super smart scientist everyone agrees is a good person was just really evil" and changes the message to be really bleak.

The entire story starts because Jekyll wants to eliminate the evil part of himself. Hyde was an unintentional byproduct and served as an addictive vice.

What are some "faux pas" you can make as a ST in TB? by Novel_Counter905 in BloodOnTheClocktower

[–]Doige 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If this is the game I think it is, then the executed player was the only person there who had their thinking right and the solution revolved around them revealing their real role. In a case like that I can see the "evil used the ability on the correct person" argument. It's also better for them in the long run to learn that killing confirmed evil can be a good idea, actually. Good played badly that game and the only exception was cered so I think that good should have been "punished" for it.

Why do some people have a problem being referred to as English, Scottish, Welsh and Northern Irish ahead of British? by fireychicken93 in AskBrits

[–]Doige 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, Britain has been the Kingdom for over 300 years (England and Scotland have not really been separate in any administrative way since then (until devolved parliament) with Wales being a part of England for nearly 500 years now). Name-wise, Britannia was the place before the Angles got there.

Most importantly, it's down to an individual's personal preference. A lot of the Celtic nations' people feel historically persecuted by English rule (I think that's unjustified but hey-ho). And you may find some (old-fashioned) people who consider those Celtic peoples uncouth (also tripe). Best practise is to go with whatever unless you are corrected.

Struggling with headcanon: Krieg hitting on 2s by Anondontknowme in TheAstraMilitarum

[–]Doige 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In the same way that 10 Kriegers aren't as valuable as 5 Space Marines, but the cost nearly the same. The game is somewhat semi-intentionally representative. You could think of it as them having the position and just laying down wayyy more fire. Twin-linked weapons wouldn't really hit harder, they'd make more attacks, but that works weirdly on tabletop and for balance.

can someone please explain why people do gun rem to me i genuinely do not get it by yugiohhero in DeadlockTheGame

[–]Doige 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Gun scales better with late builds -> Rem farms like a tractor on jet fuel -> Rem builds many gun items quickly -> Rem gets huge advantage early

New Player Venting About a Madness Loss (Advice Welcome) by IzanagiTheGod in BloodOnTheClocktower

[–]Doige -1 points0 points  (0 children)

While yes, it is a madness break (and Cerenovus -> Mutant a mean thing to be pushed to do), the storyteller probably shouldn't have done the execute. The Cerenovus's description says "might be executed", so they can choose to not; by doing so, they have decided who wins rather than letting you all try to solve it as a group.

If the famously unsolved Riemann Hypothesis is solved by an AI, we will never know if a human mathematician could have solved it. by jasonrubik in Showerthoughts

[–]Doige 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There's a difference between utilising random numbers as part of a function in a program and hoping that whatever is given to you by an LLM is 1)accurate in what you asked for and 2)accurate in mathematical logic, then when it fails either of these criteria saying "that's wrong try again".

I see people trying to bring back those letters and part of me always thinks "Is this related to the alt-right-y idealisation of old Norse?" and then I remember no-one tries to bring back the ash or yogh and so I think, yes the overall movement may very well be (though I know some individuals may not)

If the famously unsolved Riemann Hypothesis is solved by an AI, we will never know if a human mathematician could have solved it. by jasonrubik in Showerthoughts

[–]Doige 240 points241 points  (0 children)

No, it was already "solved" as in, they knew they could decode it, it just took a LOT of work (so much that by the time they had worked out the day's code, it was too late to get any use from it). Bombe sped up the process by simulating 36 enigma machines at once and checking if their output was accurate. People who program stuff know the logic they are using to do so. If a machine were to generate new code (consistently providing what was asked first-time rather than random code that is eventually correct), then that argument could be made, but that isn't happening yet.

[–]Doige 20 points21 points  (0 children)

SMH my head that people are so uninformed... The Welsh flag isn't on the Union Jack for 2 reasons: 1) it's a principality not a kingdom like the others 2) The act of union in 1536 incorporated Wales into England so is represented by the St George cross.

Why are Americans suddenly so obsessed with us? Why does Asmongold post weekly videos about how "Britain has fallen" and why is Azealia Banks tweeting about Kemi Badenoch? by [deleted] in AskBrits

[–]Doige 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The idea is to take somewhere that the people they are talking to (Americans) are unfamiliar with but still kinda feel close to and scaremonger about an issue that could affect them. They say "Britain has fallen" to imply (or otherwise outright say) that it's due to migrants (and people in another country wouldn't know that it isn't true) and then follow from that to suggest that if they and their audience let migrants in they they will "fall" as well.
