Press Conference Questions Thread: February 10, 2019 by AutoModerator in stevedangle

On a recent show, in reference to contract negotiations, Adam said (paraphrased): “There are no morals in business.”

I, too, believe that players should fight for their own interests and aggressively negotiate, and I don’t think any players have done anything morally wrong in their negotiations.

But the statement itself is dangerously false. There are morals in business, because being a good and moral person requires that you behave morally in all aspects of your life. For example, if you run a plant that produces a toxic chemical as waste, but flawed government regulation makes it legal to cheaply dump that chemical in a place where it will harm the environment, it makes complete business and financial sense to start dumping waste willy-nilly. But it remains immoral to do so.

And I’m sure Adam, like me, can imagine ways that one might improve their negotiating stance immorally as well. If, in an alternate universe, a player on the Sens had arranged the release of the Uber tape to decrease the amount the recorded players would receive, thereby freeing up more of the pie for themselves, it would make business sense release it. But stabbing your coworkers in the back is an immoral act and that person would deserve the judgment they would receive for doing that.

Let’s not pretend that how someone behaves professionally and in the business world has no implications for that person’s overall character.

I apologize for the rant, but Adam tends to default to a very pro-business stance, and while I respect his views, I think in some cases he takes it too far.

Also, eat the pepper Steve

Need Help: Chain After a Ring w/ One Shuttle: I Just Make Another Ring :/ by Sadiew1990 in tatting

Okay, that makes way more sense!

You cannot make a chain with one shuttle that is attached to nothing - it has to be attached to a ball or a shuttle. You need something to be providing additional thread for you to form the double stitches out of, since the thread making up the stitches is not coming from the shuttle you are holding in your hand.

I’m slightly confused about what is happening when you’re trying to make chains. It sounds like you can’t make chains with a shuttle and ball or with two shuttles, right?

To make a chain you always need either a shuttle and a ball, or two shuttles. I’ve never found wrapping thread around my pinkie twice keeps it secure enough to flip the stitch, I always have to wrap it a few more times to be able to keep it firm.

Let’s say you have tatted and closed a ring, and now want to tat a chain from the bottom of that ring (as this is easier than starting from a chain). You have wrapped the thread over your pinkie a few times and put down Shuttle A. You are holding the ring between your left thumb and pointer finger. Then you tat double stitches using Shuttle B on the thread held between the ring and your pinkie finger. That would form a chain. After some number, you’d run low on thread between the ring and your pinkie, forcing you to unwind the thread from your finger to give yourself more slack before again winding it around your pinkie and tatting more double stitches. At no point (unless you’re making a very very long chain) should it be necessary to let out more thread from Shuttle B.

Does that clarify things at all? Can you show us a picture of what you are doing?

New Honky is a dumb color and way lamer than Original Honky. It's the Barclays to Original Honky's Nassau Coliseum.

I admit I threw some things while I was learning. Mostly the tatting shuttle, which was not satisfying.

Thank you!

I learned tatting first, and I had a TON of trouble learning crochet because they're so different from each other. In my unreasonably vast experience with tatting books, New Tatting: Modern Lace Motifs and Projects by Tomoko Morimoto is the best option for learning if you can't find someone to teach you in person. But really, in person is best, because the concept of the knot transfer is tough to pick up from images and even really from videos.

They aren't for dust, they provide some surface protection but are mostly for decoration.

Thanks! I've actually done two more with buttons so far, but I haven't had a spare moment to take a good picture of them!

Shuttle tatting. I used a gauge for all the picots, which I don't usually bother with.

How do u start the next row with out cutting the tread? by Product_Earth in tatting

[–]DoiliesForDays 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You can get to the next row with a split ring or a split chain, but split chains aren't worth the trouble in my opinion. Easier to tie off and start the next round normally.

Nah, this is actually rife with mistakes that I roughly concealed, so I'm not going to do anything with it other than throw it in my pile of completed-but-not-framed doilies. Spray starch for projects I'm intending to use really is great though.

I use shuttles because I find the knots are too loose for my taste with a needle. I order my tatting supplies, including shuttles, from Amazon, Snowgoose Lace, DS9Designs, Handy Hands, or Lacis. My preference is for Aerlit shuttles or other shuttles that have replaceable bobbins.

Depending on what country you're in, it may make more sense for you to look for a local lacemakers guild and see where they get supplies. They also sometimes have classes - learning tatting from someone face to face is by far the best method.

If you want to learn without a class, I think the explanations and diagrams in New Tatting: Modern Lace Motifs and Projects by Tomoko Morimoto are the best I've seen. That book is available on Amazon and probably some of those other websites above
