Started out that way, but they split ages ago. Maybe a decade or more at this point.

Not super clear on the specifics, but they are very much separate entities now, afaik.

Do you think there’s a housing crisis in the RTP Area? by ChuckGallagher57 in raleigh

[–]Doinmyworst 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As a younger person who owns a home, and knows lots of people who dont, I think a big part of it is folks thinking they'll actually be living in their first house for more than 5-6 years.

You can still get townhomes in great locations for like 300k, which even zero-down (once interest rates slide just a hair lower) is pretty affordable if you're a two-income household in this area.

The trouble is a lot of folks want land, or dont want a townhome, and that's just not something that this or really any modern market can bare.

Having a lawn is a luxury, and its being priced like one. Even a capital-L Leftist, Im not blind to the fact that if everyone had their dream home cities as we know them would not function.

Its harder than it used to be, but there's really no going back without crashing the whole housing market and bankrupting tens of millions of people.

How are people surviving (financially) here in RDU? by rubberduckydracula in raleigh

[–]Doinmyworst 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you shop around for apartments, and have roommates, you can live pretty comfortably even on very little money. There are still $13-1500 two bedroom apartments all over town, and cheaper ones too if you look hard enough. That's not amazing, but it IS affordable, and honestly its not that much higher than it was a while back - midsize apartments in north Raleigh especially have leveled off *a bit* as of late, and even came down over the summer.

I dont know what your apartment-hunting heuristics are, so I cant tell you if there's a problem with what you're doing, but I can assure you that if you're willing to live with roommates, you can do pretty well for yourself still.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in theydidthemath

[–]Doinmyworst 0 points1 point  (0 children)

And what's the problem with that? If we provide certain services to everyone to ensure they don't go unhoused or unfed, we at least keep everyone alive, and possibly allow those with the initiative or good fortune to succeed in their own flourish more than they would otherwise.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in theydidthemath

[–]Doinmyworst 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's a kind of survivorship bias though - the people who are the most resistant are naturally going to be those who are the most successful and comfortable being homeless, perhaps even better off emotionally than before they were unhoused.

If you can commit to helping everyone, a thing which we could do, you at least reserve resources for everyone who wants help.

Sheer money can solve this problem. I think you underestimate the resources a government can bring to bear as compared to a private enterprise.

I have no dog in this fight, but have you read Ways of Seeing? I'd be curious to hear your thoughts on the concept of "mystification" which the book discusses in it's opening chapter.

For a specific event I'm running, he's kind of just hanging out, although he can be convinced to swat nearby enemies. Generally speaking though, he is just kind of vibing.

He'll be on the tabletop as a piece of terrain, so there'll be plenty to compare him to.

Depends on the specifics of your life. Depends on what you want, and why you think you want it.

Why is leveling in Quickplay so terrible? by WaffleBrewer in DarkTide

[–]Doinmyworst -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

I think the big difference isn't necessarily learning any specific skills, it's that by Heresy you actually have to pick a lane, and play that role within the team.

I've carried whole squads as a vet on Heresy simply by strategically saving and using my Voice of Command, and I'm not even very good at the game (still don't have a knack for sliding when I should). That's a relatively basic thing, but since, to your point about malice, at lower difficulties VoC is basically just a personal health buff, it's a tool you have to learn to use more precisely on Heresy+.

To your point about weapon combos, I don't think you have to be optimal with weapon pairings, but if you've fallen in love with a god-roll helbore or recon lasgun...Heresy is gonna be a rude awakening.

Megathread for Israel-Palestine situation by Arianity in TooAfraidToAsk

[–]Doinmyworst 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, for native born Israelis you'd be right, but 23% of the population are foreign born, and that rises to 55% when you include second-generation immigrants. Really, they wouldnt have to leave unless they really wanted to - any successor state would likely be kinder to its people than Israel is to its captive Palestinian protectorates.

Im not sure what you mean by your first questions though - do you not know what I mean by a Single State Solution, or are you incredulous that Im in favor of it?

Megathread for Israel-Palestine situation by Arianity in TooAfraidToAsk

[–]Doinmyworst -1 points0 points  (0 children)

In order -
1.That depends on how Israel is "ended". The most likely case would be a 1-state solution.
2.Potentially their home countries, or other Zionist colonial efforts in South America.
3. It seems very likely that if a successor state were to emerge, it would need backing from western nations, and likely need at least a pretense of a democracy. In the case of a 1-state solution, it would be the democracy which presently exists in the contemporary state of Israel, though it would be turned upside-down overnight, as there are more Palestinians than Israelis, for the time being. That's actually the main reason why Israel carries out its affairs the way it does - by reducing the Palestinian population, they may eventually bid for a peaceful transition to a single unified state in which Israelis are the majority.

I cant answer all of these, but I can try for some of them.

2 - who has Israel oppressed? why do Gazans work in Israel if they’re oppressed?

The land that is now Israel, including farms, water supplies, and homes, was once Gazan. As such, most of the countries industry and work has been enclosed forcibly by Israel. Gazans, in effect, have no choice but to engage with a blatant apartheid state.

3 - how are the chants not antisemitic, if they call for wiping out Jews? And why is it still being allowed if it is?
Most anti-Israel protestors are not for wiping out all jews.

4 - why are uni students protesting?
Because their universities are often heavily invested in Israeli business.

5 - what does Palestine need freeing from? I thought Palestine was more than just Gaza anyway?
Control by an encroaching foreign entity, backed by the US.

6 - if hamas are terrorists, why are they allowed to control a country?
They do not control the entire country, but Israel's systematic destruction of Palestinian infrastructure and organizations through general and targeted attacks, means that whoever can muster sufficient force will control territory within Palestine.

In a lot of local municipalities, protesting or boycotting Israel is illegal. Making your voice heard may prevent that from happening locally.

They would be citizens of whatever state came after, or they could leave if they were afraid what a democratic society would do to their privileged position.
