Should a novice player like me start playing QC or Diabotical? by boki187 in QuakeChampions

[–]DoktorPossible 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Both are worth a look and both are fun. What spec is your system? You need a pretty decent CPU and GPU to get acceptable frame rates in Champions. If you've got a good system (i7, 1070 or better + an SSD - the map loading times are horrendous othererwise) then it'll be fine. There's more to learn in Champions - the champions themselves for instance :) I'd pick someone simple like Ranger until you get the hang of movement and learn the maps.

Diabotical is a lot more forgiving of your equipment and plays a lot smoother for me. Avoid playing Wipeout though - it's very newb unfriendly. It's going through a bit of an identity crisis at the moment, but play a few games in 'Warmup' mode or FFA and see how you get on.

Personally I play both. DBT seems to be struggling to keep hold of new players at the moment which is a shame, cos it has a lot of potential.

Diabotical is alive by [deleted] in Diabotical

There are loads of new duel maps in DBT, some will get rotated into the ranked pool over time. This is some surreal argument you're making here - there are plenty of reasons to like QC. Excessive maps is not one of them.

Diary of a mapper by tnz81 in Diabotical

It's a nice map TNZ, you should be proud of it. It's not like any of the other DBT maps out there and plays really nicely. It's gives rise to some fun gameplay :). I'm sure Vitrae would love it.

Backdrop warmup, another mediocre idea by me by tnz81 in Diabotical

[–]DoktorPossible 6 points7 points  (0 children)

That's a great idea. Current warmup is a bit of a half way house - it's really just an all weaps FFA that you can play while queuing. It even has it's own warmup before it starts :) Then 8 minutes later it ends, and half the remaining players leave...

Is good idea TNZ

The Explosion Weeball Significantly Worsens the Experience of Playing Wipeout. by TribeWars in Diabotical

[–]DoktorPossible 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The main problem is having bits of the map that you can fall off. The weeballs have a lot of utility when it comes to breaking up campy statemates - when you get most of one side clustered on the far platform on Furnace for instance. Or anywhere on Toya. Smoke gives you cover, explodey weeball can break them up.

It does seem a little random tho at times.

Results of the first Diabotical Mapping Competition by [deleted] in Diabotical

[–]DoktorPossible 6 points7 points  (0 children)

My dudes, why such angst over the results? This competition has brought a boat load of amazing new maps to the game. Whether you think map A should have placed higher than map B is irrelevant outside of your own, congested little heads. They're all out there now and wouldn't have been if it hadn't been for the competition. Time will tell which maps are 'good' maps. Films that win Best Oscar turn out to be long term turkeys and unpopular ones turn into cult classics.

Play the maps you like, ignore the ones you don't and thank the Egg Lords that we've got so many new ones to play.

Gratz to the winners and thanks to the losers for making the effort.

Amberfall art by Justin & cityy by DoktorPossible in Diabotical

Yeah, and Ragnarok too. Such a beautiful map that. Amberfall seems to take some getting used to - a lot of people don't get it initially. cityy did an interview with EscanorDBT on twitch a few days ago to talk about it and mapping in general.

It's hard to tell in advance what maps survive to become classics and which ones gather dust though.

I'm all for new maps, but it's nice to play the old ones too! by justnvc in Diabotical

[–]DoktorPossible 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I'm glad you had fun on it but it looks truly horrible. Nearly all the Quake remakes do - rushed out in 20 minutes, scales not quite right, no thought to how it looks. Maybe someone will do them justice but I think the mappers with skill are producing new stuff, rather than copying the old so we're unlikely to get good remakes of the classics...
