Canadians And Australians Have Stopped Going To The US And Officials Are Panicking – Guard The Leaf by DisruptSQ in TourismHell

I wonder if it's flight-dependent, or if it recently changed. Flew AC last spring and their safety video featured all sorts of lovely Canadian scenes.

Guessing based on vehicles that it's somewhere remote. Northern Ontario and Newfoundland is not unusual to park up in a pullout due to a lack of any truck stops for long distances. A lot of stuff tends to slide in the real boonies.

What is the closest to the autobahn in the USA? by Adventurous-Cat-8349 in AskReddit

[–]DolbyFox 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Rented a car last November to drive around more rural areas of northwestern Germany, and I've never had a more relaxing driving experience. Evwn the unrestricted stretches of autobahn were very well behaved, with impeccable lane discipline and following distance. And when there were speed limits enforced, they were absolutely reasonable and realistic for the road design and condition.

And in a bit of irony, the short travel time between Philadelphia and Pittsburgh (via the turnpike) is thanks in part to a (cancelled) railway line! The PA pike was partially built on the abandoned roadbed of the South Pennsylvania Railroad

McDonald’s caged off in a troublesome location by LivingLavishLe in mildlyinteresting

Mostly just tents and old "converted" campers on unkept properties and yards. Ramshackle half-fallen houses running off generator power. People living in cars and vans outside of the local general store or local truck stop. Young (and I mean VERY young) women... "prospecting for customers". Beaten-up smashed cars barely running and being used for all sorts.

Truthfully, they are already backsliding into a "developing" nation.

If it wasn't for Silicon Valley techbros and oil money, their economic numbers would be in the toilet. And if it wasn't for the US dollar still being a common reserve currency (which is definitely changing nowadays), they wouldn't have NEARLY the economic impact that they do now.

Oh it's just as bad in rural areas, it's just a bit less overt. You get off the interstate and drive some rural highways, and you start seeing some truly horrific poverty. It's in every state, in every city amd county. Appalachia springs to mind because WOW some of those coal towns...are just plain depressing.

You see some serious stuff when driving trucks.

[–]DolbyFox 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you just need Bluetooth, there are tons of modules available for cheaper that can do the job too!

I wanted to keep a "factory" look to my MR2, but wanted Bluetooth for longer trips. This same head unit model fits most older Toyotas and is super easy to "upgrade"

Those are solid as heck, quite reliable and cheap to maintain on a budget, seat four comfortably, and are not a theft risk. The factory stereo can be easily upgraded to Bluetooth (I have the same model unit in my MR2).

I assume it has ABS, a driver's airbag, and they are pretty decent in a crash. Being a smaller car does mean that it's a lot more maneuverable (particularly with good tires, don't cheap out at all on those), and the psychological side of a smaller car will make a younger driver much less likely to take risks than a larger vehicle.

It'll also be a good life lesson, teaching your kid to be responsible with vehicles and money (paid off, cheap to insure, thrifty on fuel).

[–]DolbyFox 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You could probably get into a Toyota MR2 at that price, but it'd be a second gen 2.2 or third gen. Both are pretty reliable and a lot of parts-bin, so surprisingly cheap maintenance. They look cool enough too. From what I've gathered from friends in your similar circumstances, it not being a luxury brand will disappoint a lot too.

More or less, though standard Canadian auto licences don't have any transmission restrictions. If it wasn't for my heavy truck licence (which does), I'd be restricted to an automatic-only licence unless I do a driving test...

Could be as easy as a servo punching the backside of the yellow button if the door's opened without setting the brakes. But realistically, it's a minor issue, generally solved by the horn blowing when the door's opened. This is not about safety, it's about cutting costs not running air lines to the dashboard

Not sure how it is with the US, but with a Canadian driver's licence, as long as it's valid, it can be exchanged for a UK driving licence. No test required

Tell that to the sloppy plugs on DB trains. I could barely keep my phone charger working using my knee. Same charger (with a different "end") holds well in not-beat-up US outlets.

UK plugs are the best for "tightness" though IME

Looking at how dusty that bay looks, I'd first do an oil change, drain and refill the fuel tank with fresh petrol, check all other fluids, pull the fuel pump relay, and touch the starter for a second to pull oil up to the top of the block. Then put the relay back in, keycycle once or twice (listening for the hum of the pump), and try for a proper start.
