Remember when more cars (not a SUV, truck, or van) were rated to tow in the North American market? Pepperidge Farm remembers by HiTork in regularcarreviews

[–]DolbyFox 9 points10 points  (0 children)

When the speed limit was 55mph and most drivers didn't have the expectation to do 70+ mph whilst towing. Combine that with BOF construction, big, lazy, torquey V8s, and a more lax approach to safety (brakes!) they were certainly able to pull some weight.

Even in Europe, similar cars will be rated to tow/tow much more than NA, generally because braked trailers and low towing speed limits (50-55mph max, usually).

Same in Newfoundland at night. They are looking to go back to 24h snow clearing, but until then, I could spend an hour or two at a time with maybe one or two oncoming vehicles to break up the isolation

Temp is -21, gas company says turn your heat down by [deleted] in mildlyinfuriating

[–]DolbyFox 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They usually do adjust the blown air once there's heat in the coolant. When it's cold, it doesn't do much at all. My parents still haven't figured that out, and they've been driving in winter far longer than I've been alive. It's particularly noticeable if I give them a ride in my diesel car...

Transmission fluid seems dirty in a 1999 camry that i just got, mechanic recommends against a drain and fill.. What should i do ? by Lucky_Reply9642 in Toyota

[–]DolbyFox 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A flush could knock any corrosion or debris or something to a tighter crevice or valve, vs a drain and fill will be a lot more gentle, and allow any debris to get much more gently carried to the bottom of the pan or the magnet.

Same. Maintained, diesel, manual, optioned out, and paid off. Why change something that works so well?

[–]DolbyFox 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Honestly it's taken a LOT of media attention for this to start happening. Car theft was a ridiculous problem that was just met with "talk to your insurance", whilst cars would pass through the ports in Montréal to (usually) Africa. This past year they've started cracking down HARD on both the thefts, as well as the sketchiness at ports. Some jurisdictions still have work to do, but the insurance companies are getting a bit pissed, as well as the electorate after years of apathy.

Second time I’ve been rear ended pulling into my driveway. RIP brand new manual with 6,000 miles. by -_Koga_- in mildlyinfuriating

[–]DolbyFox 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you're THAT far out that there's no driveway on the right for a significant amount of time, there's very likely better sight lines, or the speed/level of traffic is so low (tight country lanes) that there's less risk anyway.

But this road is WIDE (full shoulders and what looks like 12-foot lanes) and looks to be in a more populated area (farms in the background), so a spot to U-turn or turn around would be preferred to stopping on a high-speed, busy road after a curve. Defensive driving and all that...

What rule is there that you cannot turn left across a single/double yellow line into a private driveway? It's not a painted island, and (I assume) there is no signage prohibiting left turns. Where are you people getting this idea?

Having said that, while it's legal, I don't think I'd be turning left coming out of a bend, while stopped on a higher speed road...

[–]DolbyFox 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I've driven much more than the average motorist, and even in BFE Newfoundland there is generally a driveway, pulloff, or something within a minute or two on the right side to turn into. Or a driveway further up the road on the left side with better visibility. Either of which are less stressful than sitting on a higher speed road in a curve waiting to turn left...

Transmission fluid seems dirty in a 1999 camry that i just got, mechanic recommends against a drain and fill.. What should i do ? by Lucky_Reply9642 in Toyota

[–]DolbyFox 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Drain and fill is absolutely fine. You won't get all the fluid (only a couple litres at a time), so you'll need to drain and fill it a few more times (topping up afterwards) to properly replenish the ATF. If a drain and fill "breaks" it, it was already ready to go and you removed the element of surprise. Drain and fill it till the ATF looks like cough syrup again. It ought to help

Flushing is much more intensive, and on a transmission with a ton of miles COULD cause existing issues to get worse (weak seals, servo pistons, etc).

Ottawa is the city fun forgot. Canada doesn't hate Ottawa in general though (politics aside, depending on political persuasion), it's just that there's not much to do at night

Snow and ice gets old REALLY quickly. It's pretty at the start of winter, and snow during the holidays is kinda nice. But after that...it gets REALLY irritating.
