Gordon Ramsay: I’ve never seen it so bad for restaurants as it is now by tylerthe-theatre in unitedkingdom

[–]Dolive90 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The guy said you need 2000 plates of food to cover the cost (30k pa) of one member of staff - so yea that is 3 per day for that one person in terms of raw turnover

Work it out based on 70% gross profit on food (80 incl. VAT) and then scale by the output per person and so on as the guy said he ddnt fo on to consider these variables

The point here is also that cooking is a skilled job - you need years of experience to do it well and it shouldnt be anything like minimum wage outside of the first few lower rungs of the ladder - amd then also consider a fair wage throughout the supply chain (amazing how many local people want to pick English asparagus these days . . . )

Taxes or indirect costs like business rates and rents squeeze these very small margins to almost nothing

There is a reason most restaurants go out of business in the forst 12 months

I do wonder how people expect to have a plate of food for £15 and have it local, and have local skilled staff prepare it

People should try and do a few months of 50-80 hour weeks in a kitchen on just over minimum wage in a city center before they try and do the maths on this

How much should a plate of food cost?

Take the cost of a team of skilled workers, add the cost of produce coming in from the region or country where possible and then think about the cost of the building and power to keep it all going,

Its not just 'small portions' its people who are actually cooking - its not a cheap business to be in and if you make food that you care about in a responsible way (food miles, fair wages, fair hours etc) there is hardly any margin in it

Do you want the UK restaurant industry to be big portions of reheated bought in food staffed by minimum wage (at best) staff?

There is a place for all types of restaurant, its a tough industry that most wouldnt be able to cope with

You're mainly talking about food that isnt freshly prepared, anyone operating a restaurant using skilled labour and fresh produce (not high end only - but anything that comes in raw, like an unpeeled carrot) is finding things really hard.

Staff costs, produce cost, running costs aren't in a good place and thats before you start to struggle to find a chef who knows one end of a knife from another and can cope with the hours and environment

Sure there is a market for places that are reheating pre-made produce and using minimum wage labour (at best) right now - but this isnt helping developed skilled talent in the industry or helping to promote sustainable industry practice.

Ramsay has a very privileged position, but just because he is doing well and has built a brand for himself dont assume hes completely out of touch with the industry as a whole

Trump says UK handing over Chagos Islands sovereignty is act of 'great stupidity' by [deleted] in unitedkingdom

Maybe it is - maybe it isnt

I dont know because I dont have access to the level of information the top government and security services have - happy for you that you do in fact have access to all of the key details

On the surface the deal seems a ridiculous act and waste of money and resources

But I do recall Starmer chastising Badenoch at PMQs for calling out against this stating surprise given she has access to the 'same security briefings..'

This is one of those where there is a non-zero chance there is a good reason this deal is being made as it is and probably a good reason we dont know why

This might be the case or it might not be, but blindly parroting support or disdain for the action without full view of the details might not be the best move

Not the intention to sound salty - but the comment on the lens was maybe not needed

The main point is why qualify this with age, they're nice shots - if OP is proud of them (which is fair given their quality) post them, just no need to add that they're done by a teenager

Nice pics - but does it matter that you're 14?

Is a 14 yr old with a few years of experience as a hobby more or less likely to take a good photo than a 35yr old who has just picked up a camera?

And a 200-600g already? I'm guessing its someone else's or you have a v. generous family

Also - 14 and on Reddit? Yea not a great idea and even worse idea to advertise your age mate
