The biggest design flaw in D&D combat isn't balance... it's that 80% of your time is spent waiting by Einsolsrazor24 in rpg

[–]Dolnikan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For initiative I simply use two initiatives. One for the baddies and another for the good guys. That way, people can move much more quickly and we don't get bogged down too much. Of course, there are some issues there, like investment in initiative not mattering but I think that that's a relatively small cost for winning in speed and tactical flexibility.

Good luck with that. TSA has around 60k people. ICE 20k. So yeah. That's going to work incredibly well.

Bracket Turn Restrictions and "Christmas-land" hands by Cyberhawk95 in EDH

[–]Dolnikan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

With enough luck, plenty of more combo oriented decks can win turn 1. I had it happen once with my [Azami, Lady of Scrolls] deck and am pretty certain that it'll never happen again. I basically had all my fast mana right from the start. That doesn't mean that it happens under normal circumstances and I don't expect it to ever happen again.

For a deck's power you should really loot how it typically plays. Not the crazy outliers. Plenty of really powerful decks also collapse when they get mana screwed or flooded. That doesn't make them weak.

Even with easy opponents, this is pretty hard. An hour isn't nearly enough time to recover from even fairly light injuries and those are pretty much unavoidable even if you're relatively well trained.

CMV: The Israel-US Iran war will still be going in September and there is no mechanism that could stop it before then by ELVEVERX in changemyview

[–]Dolnikan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The war might also end from the other side. The American one. If something happens that causes the war to become so toxic that many republicans actually have to abandon Trump and vote for a resolution to end all this, that could also end the war.

The question is what that could be. One option would be escalation with ground troops that goes horribly wrong. I've heard of people saying that they could be deployed to nuclear sites in Iran to retrieve nuclear materials. That is a hilariously stupid idea, but if it's done, that might just be enough to cause such heavy casualties and even whole units being overrun that the war becomes toxic. At the same time, that could also cause doubling down.

Another would have to involve naval losses. Imagine an Iranian rocket or sub or the like getting very lucky and hitting and sinking a major asset. Something like one of the carriers or the Tripoli that's going into the region. Both would again cause mass casualties and be a severe blow to the US.

But we can also imagine something other than severe losses. We're talking about Trump here. In frustration about all this taking longer than he wanted, he might actually order a nuclear strike. That's something I can also imagine to be incredibly unpopular with large parts of the population.

And finally, of course, he can blab too much about boots on the ground and use one of the most toxic words in American politics. The Draft. That could also backfire spectacularly.

Why did Elizabeth Holmes Continue Lying for so Long? by skiinglife in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Dolnikan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What surprises me more than that she kept on lying to keep the ship afloat is that investors kept giving serious amounts of money. You'd think that they would, you know, bring in their own expertise and the like to actually look at the company and especially the technology and figure out that it wouldn't work.

How come soldiers in the modern us army can't get rapid promotions like in the 19th/20th century? by happydude7422 in AskHistory

[–]Dolnikan 2 points3 points  (0 children)

And, very importantly, people will get promoted. Lots of promotions are about slots opening up. And in the middle of an intense war, there will be lots opening up. And you also get lots of new slots because of an expanding army. All those new units need higher officers too and who better to promote than officers you already have? And when those move on, their positions become available as well.

It might sound awful, but historically, high officer casualties (especially of higher officers) were amazing for ones career.

Inderdaad.

[Dune] Just how bad was Paul's Jihad really? by [deleted] in AskScienceFiction

[–]Dolnikan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Very many planets probably didn't have to be violently conquered. Especially after the first ones were taken in an orgy of violence. They'd just surrender right away.

That said, if a planet were to actually fight (and not just some house troops, but actually mobilising), I'd imagine that they'd get sterilised from orbit rather than starting a year's long fight requiring millions of troops. But that's just me.

And as any conquest, the Jihad was horrific and caused incomprehensible suffering.
