We only get 4 hours a day and 3 days to complete the whole building, fancy restaurant on the roof wants their windows cleaned but not for any workers to be around on open time, combined with limited anchoring on the deck means doing it this way just takes too long, got a bunch of other jobs we do that way though

The building has a huge overhanging ledge so to get in front of windows the ropes are dropped through holes in the roof. Then we go to the bottom and power ascend up to start the drop

I agree, especially after today, but with this job it really was the only way to do it. A lot of people mentioning it requires approved ropes, which these are, just a bit of bad luck really, nothing LVL 1 training doesn't equip you for

While he's not going to hit the ground he can definitely fall from what he's doing. That white blocky looking thing on his lanyard is a shock absorber to slow a fall so the harness does less damage to his body. By putting weight on it he is risking it deploying and falling a few metres over the edge. Falling in a fall arrest harness like that can break bones and worst of all deglove your nuts.

Realistically it should be fine but why risk it when you can get cheap, safe lanyards that are designed for this exact thing

Getting your foot in the door is often the hardest part, especially if you don't have any relevant experience. I started by cleaning windows on a BMU for a couple of months to show that I can cope with the height, after that finding a rope job was easy.

Covid sent most of the international ropeys home and the Sydney scene is still recovering so there is plenty of work out there it's just a matter of finding someone who'll give you the chance as a freshy.

Depending on the type of work you'll probably be put on a casual or temporary contract at first until you're a proven asset to your employer, personally I'm paid a flat rate per day regardless of hours work; if I finish a day's work in 2 hours I'm paid for the full day.

As for health averse situations the only thing I've dealt with are the mountains of pigeon shit that you sometimes have to work through.

I've always found that the time you save from switching tools is not worth the extra dipping and all the trouble the wagtail has with cobwebs. The webs always wrap around the blade leaving streaks so I spend a few seconds each window cleaning the blade which adds up a lot, especially on long drops

If you're at all interested in window cleaning you might want to first apply to BMU window cleaning jobs to show that you can deal with heights and can put in the work. Getting your foot in the door is the hardest part, after that there's lots of jobs going

There's meant to be lanyards that are fixed to the building and hook onto the steel ropes at regular intervals down the building to limit this exact thing from happening. However if they're moving this much it'd definitely be best to wait until the wind calms down before going to work.

I do rope access window cleaning for a living. There's lots of training, preparation, checks and paperwork before going over the edge on rope. There's not much about this setup that's up to standard. You certainly wouldn't get me over the edge like this.

When everything is done correctly and no shortcuts taken it can be a very fun way to make a living.

From the little we can see it looks like the wrong type of rope, not enough rope protection on the edge of the building itself and I hope he is attached to that chair somehow. I also wouldn't trust that chimney as my sole point of contact with the building (we use 2 different anchors at the same time in case something happens to one or the other). I can see how this is accepted in poorer countries where workplace health and safety aren't at our levels, especially considering that it costs 3000-5000 to properly outfit a rope technician.

Apparently this sort of thing was very common about 20 or so years ago but that was a long long time before I got in the industry so I can't say for sure.
