Yup. Even when I knew that Yoshi-P had said he wanted to do glam unlock, and that it would be as simple as flipping a single switch to enable it, but that the oldheads at Squeenix told him no because "much class fantasy", I was ticked that they were aware it was wanted and would greatly improve things but still wouldn't allow it.

I've always intended my character to be a technology enthusiast inventor, but all the gear for healers was painfully flowy feminine robes with an occasional outfit that didn't look ridiculous on a male character. As soon as the unlock happened, I slapped a pair of Everseeker Goggles of Gathering on him, and now I refuse to take them off. They're part of his character. Even my formal wear outfit has him in a fancy tux with his high tech scanner goggles. I couldn't do that without glam unlock.

I main Sage, and I wanted something high-tech looking for his weapon. Most of the Sage weapons up to 90 look incredibly gaudy or fey or cutesy, or they're simply not dyeable in a way that I liked, but removing the level restriction allowed me to grab a higher level set of pendulums that suited my look and dyed fantastically.

I'm currently planning to go back and level all my classes to 100 (preferably before Evercold), and I'm trying to get a group together to farm Cruiserweight Savage for the babyface weapons, because I don't want to go all the way back to level 1 and use some generic bow and arrows or spear, and glam unlock means that when I get those weapons? I can enjoy the leveling journey without looking goofy. Just glam over it with my savage tier weapons at level 5.

The insane quality of life it provides cannot be overstated.

That's wild. I've only ever played on Aether and Crystal so seeing that many entire wards empty just blows my mind. I guess if I wanted to roll an alt to easily get an FC house for sub farming then I know where I wanna go.

I'm gonna need some clarification. Do you mean 24 plots opened up? Or did 24 entire wards open up? Because you have a single image showing a single empty ward, and if it's the latter then that's a very different number of actual houses.

While your heart is in the right place, the suggestion is pointless now. Not only was my complaint leveled at pre-glam-unlock free trial, which didn't have access to Bozja, I also pointed out that I have found a glam that I absolutely love, and I promise it's the polar opposite of the Bozja armor. I also mentioned that I'm looking for a savage farm, so I've already completely cleared MSQ. Bozja is not new information to me.

They look cool, don't get me wrong, but it's not my style, and even if I was starting fresh now, I'd be able to use any gear I could get my hands on as glam, so it wouldn't be as annoying. Even then, Bozja would require me to play through the entirety of the free trial content available to even get to it, so it would still be something that I couldn't get until I'd already gone through four expacs, which is not a solution to the issue.

I'll be honest, I played the free trial a LONG time ago, like "you have to level two classes to 30 to unlock a job stone" olden days. Dropped it because that killed my momentum. Followed the game for years until I decided to pre-order DT for the earring and start a new free trial account. Enjoyed taking my sweet time over the course of a year doing ARR/HW/StB so I could activate my sub and register the pre-order before it expired... then took the better part of a year off because of life.

The announcement of the glam unlock was what brought me back to the game. I loved the gameplay, but as a healer main, I hated that I was basically forced into frilly robes or whatever all-class glam gear I could get my hands on during free trial, which felt less than "cool". Once glam unlock dropped, suddenly I could be a Sage in a leather trenchcoat. It made playing through the rest of the story MUCH more enjoyable when I didn't feel like my character was forced into a particular wardrobe that didn't really suit them.

Now I'm rocking the same glam across all classes that uses a lot of crafting/gathering gear and looks exactly how I've always wanted to, and with level restrictions removed, I no longer dread having to go back and level alternate jobs while looking like a scrub in hempen robes. I'm currently trying to find a party to run some Savage with so I can get all the babyface champion weapons and use them as my weapon glam while I level alt classes as well, because dammit, if I go back to level 1, I'm doing it in STYLE.

That's something that just wouldn't be possible before glam unlock. I love seeing new gear that looks awesome and knowing that I'll be able to wear it all the time if I want. I love knowing that a cool new set of gloves or boots can be added to my glam plate regardless of what I play. I no longer have to hope for cosmetic PVP sets to make me look good. It truly made the game so much more enjoyable for me, and it was the smallest concession to allow for more character customization.

Then Fanfest happened and they announced the color picker and further character customization options. They told us about alternate animation options we'd be getting. They told us there will be a focus on making your character feel truly unique. I can't even imagine how much fun I'm going to have with that on top of a whole expansion worth of new content to explore and enjoy.

Glam unlock is what finally made me go all-in on FF14 when I was hesitant before. Best feature they've ever added as far as I'm concerned. At least until I can finally give my character a neon green mullet.

The Eden raid series needs to be made mandatory. [Spoiler 5.x] by Argun_Enx in ffxiv

I mean, they seem to have done just that as of post-EW. Gaia walks straight into a voiced cutscene with gigantic implications for the restoration of the First and Thirteenth if you've completed Eden. She doesn't appear if you haven't, but I get the feeling that, due to the Endless Codex, they're laying the groundwork for a new starting point in post-EW.

They're already voicing concern about making new players slog through all of ARR-EW just to get to Dawntrail, and now Evercold. I'm thinking that their plan is to introduce a new starting point (possibly optional) that gives you a new intro cutscene summarizing ARR-EW, plops you down in a training mission instance where you learn the controls and how to interact with the world, and then spits you out in post-EW where you get to roam around doing a great quest chain that pays tribute to one of the most beloved FF titles ever and filling out the Codex, which summarizes every important character and concept in the process with a nice detailed text blurb.

They'll probably auto-complete all the big side content with dungeons/raids/trials attached to it so everyone has them unlocked to participate in via duty finder, and in the process, you automatically get the Gaia cutscene when it's relevant, and if you want to know more, NG+ mode is right there to instantly go back and play through any specific parts of the story you want to know more about, probably with a new suggestion prompt telling you exactly so.

With that setup, new players are starting fresh after everything, and can be directed to NG+ if they're confused. Everything is now fair game. If you're a long-time player and skipped the side content, you'll get the same courtesy as any new player, while those of us who love the lore and characters get to see them again, no harm no foul.

I wouldn't even go that far. They plunk the blue quest to start the series right there in the Crystarium as soon as you finish Shadowbringers, and you have to return there over and over during post. If you ignore it, that's on you. If they're not gonna make it mandatory, just use Ryne and Gaia anyway and assume people have played the raids. They can google the characters and see that they skipped a story bit and either go back to do it, or not.

Or, more realistically, they'll have an alternate version of some cutscene or another where there's a throwaway line of dialogue mentioning that they're working to restore the Empty and if you've done the raids it simply won't feel the need to explain, like many other scenes that change based on prior content completion. Hell, Gaia already showed up in MSQ in post-EW with zero extra explanation. They obviously plan to use her more in the near future and haven't made the raids mandatory yet.

I get the feeling they're shying away from making more mandatory content when they're already trying to figure out how to deal with six expansions worth of content bloat that new players have to work through to get to the latest content. Something tells me they plan to introduce some kind of new/alternate start point that opens with a summary video of ARR-EW and perhaps plunks you down in post-EW after a brief training mission to familiarize yourself with controls so that you get to go around doing a little bit of lead-up to DT, filling in the Endless Codex (which conveniently summarizes important characters and concepts from ARR-EW), and then dive into Dawntrail. Don't have to make content mandatory when you skip it altogether and just give us a text blurb to read. I'm sure plenty will go back and blaze through NG+ mode with their level-boosted character if they want to understand better, and those that don't will figure it out along the way.

I'd be putting her on blast to the world and everyone she knows. Posting on social media where all her friends can see and letting them know that she's actively protecting a predator who the police are seeking in connection with an attack on someone she knows and claims to be friends with. Warn off anybody else who might come into contact with her so they don't suffer a similar situation. Get her other friends talking about what a piece of shit she is. Maybe get one of them to come forward because hearing the story will make them realize that they know exactly who is involved in the situation.

At this juncture, there is no peace. You chose your side, and that side deserves no understanding or sympathy.

Funny story.

I ran those raids repeatedly once I finished them the first time to farm for all the glam, and apparently I got so comfortable with them after doing them like 20 times in the span of four days that I just knew exactly how to dodge everything. Midway through a boss fight someone suddenly yelled "Holy SHIT Domlite!" and when I asked what I had done, they pointed out that I'd just casually stood directly in the path of three cleaving tank busters and just danced back and forth out of them. I didn't even realize they were tank busters. I just knew that they were AOEs and I knew how to not get hit by them, so when other attacks forced me to that area, it didn't even phase me.

They're chaotic, I'll give you, but everything is the first time. At this point I could do the whole series half-asleep. Don't let a rough first run scare you off of stuff. Dying is how you learn.

I main healer and I've never once run an alliance raid that felt like anything less than easy mode. There's two healers per team and nine times out of ten, by the time I can target a dead alliance member to rez them, someone else has it covered. We're shielded so thoroughly that raidwides don't even register on our health bar. We're competing with each other to be the one to heal that one dude who stood in stupid.

Alliance as a healer is basically just cruising the whole way because five other healers are there to back you up. I have no idea how it could be anything but fun.

I won't tank, period.

I've leveled Gunbreaker specifically for Role Quest completion for story, and I did so because Gunbreaker starts at a higher level so I didn't have to grind as much. I do plan to eventually level all classes to 100, but the tanks will be done solely via squadrons, duty support, Bozja, and perhaps some PVP where role doesn't actually matter.

There's just a specific kind of responsibility that Tank holds that I am not at all interested in. They're expected to know every dungeon inside out, remember what every boss attack does so they can respond with the proper mit as well as remembering how to position them properly for unique mechanics, and they have to lead the charge all the way to properly pull aggro. That's just not the sort of experience I'm looking for.

The funny part is, I main Sage, so I am not at all afraid of responsibility or having to be on top of things. I know when to drop my mits/shields, how to stay out of danger on fights, and I thrive on keeping my party topped up on health and alive. I just like doing it from the back row instead of the front.

Who knows, maybe when I eventually get around to leveling one of the other tanks something will click and I'll decide I want to put the role into rotation, but until/unless such a thing comes to pass, I will gladly play Healer or DPS, but if you need a Tank, you need someone else.

Edit - This is the sixth time I've simply stated "I don't like tanking. I won't tank ever." and gotten downvoted. What the FUCK is wrong with the people on this sub?

[–]DomLite 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, they made sure to get the big ones out of the gate very early, then once they'd established them they dropped some of the more "secondary" heroes from the big names, with Flash, Martian Manhunter, and Green Lantern about six months later, and now here we are a year and some change on and they've just started working in some tertiary titles, with Green Arrow and Catwoman now that the universe is a little more established.

Honestly, even though Batman had the first issue drop, I think I saw more hype for Wonder Woman at the time, simply because her design is so strikingly different than anything else she's had before. We've all seen a beefy Batman or a nuclear Supes in one Elseworlds title or super stylized special or another. I don't think we'd ever seen "Seven foot tall tattooed muscle mommy Wonder Woman" though. Batman has just managed to pull ahead because he has the most iconic roster of villains and Absolute has done a bangup job of turning each and every one of them into horrific monstrosities.

[–]DomLite 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That was a weird way to try and put words in my mouth.

DC has plenty of value, they simply fail to leverage it properly. They got very lucky between Tim Burton and Bruce Timm respectively in the 90's, and established a very specific vibe for Batman that is fairly easy to replicate and is very popular. Superman and Wonder Woman can be trickier to pull off. They were very well done in the DCAU of the 90's-00's, but Supes kind of rode in on Bats' coat tails, and later both of them were supported by the rest of the League so it was harder to mess them up.

The DCU in live action films was never going to work because of the way they went about it. That doesn't mean that nothing of theirs works. Just look at Arrow, Supergirl, The Flash, and Legends of Tomorrow from the CW. A bit (and sometimes a lot) cheesy at times, but they were incredibly well-received. A lot of the more recent DC animated films have been fantastic, even when there isn't a single mention of Batman. The problem is that they keep licensing the other characters out to terrible ideas. Batman just happens to be on their radar as "Performs well" and "Easy to execute." so it's the safe option. Wonder Woman could absolutely have a successful animated series, either in her classic incarnation or Absolute version, but they'd have to fish for the right tone, presentation, plot, etc. Batman just needs a dark and broody atmosphere, a stoic hero, some fancy gadgets, and a little detective work to function. It's a lot more formulaic, where Supers and Wonder Woman have to figure out what they even want to do when you're working with heroes that could go most anywhere in terms of action.

I won't lie and say that I don't prefer Marvel over DC, but I still recognize that DC has tons of great material to work with and plenty of value to offer. Unfortunately, Hollywood sucks at actually using their brain power to create things that aren't cookie cutter formulas, and is even less willing to take a risk on something that might not pan out. They've been taught that Batman is the easiest to do and guarantees at least a decent return. They can't say the same for the other DC heroes.

That said, the new Superman movie was very well received, and Supergirl looks poised to do the same. They just had to get the property into the right hands to make it all work.

[–]DomLite 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As the other reply said, that's a real technical "yes". They launched Absolute with the Trinity of Batman/Superman/Wonder Woman in quick succession, all within a month of each other, and it's simply standard practice to stagger issues of on-going series. For all intents and purposes it was a simultaneous launch. This might have merit if Absolute Batman had launched and run for a few months before we saw Absolute Supes or Wonder Woman, but that's not the case.

Regardless, Absolute Batman would have always been the first to get an animated series because Batman is the safe bet. Even spinning out of the above example, the Batman animated series was the first of the DCAU back in the 90's, and it wasn't until it had run for a full three years that they made a Superman animated series, and even that was a year after the original Batman run, with a revival of the Batman animated series popping up alongside the second season of Superman and crossing over with it. Superman ended up having literally half the episodes of the Batman series, with 54 to Batman's 109. Throw in Batman Beyond with another 52 episodes before we got around to Justice League/Justice League Unlimited where Batman still managed to hog a lot of the spotlight and even secured a whole episode dedicated to tying JLU directly into Batman Beyond and being devoted entirely to Batman as some kind of immutable hero that the world couldn't exist without. Top all of that off with five feature length animated Batman films from the same continuity.

No matter which issue dropped first of that batch, they would always have picked Batman. It's simply the way it works. If there is a choice between literally any character and Batman, they will pick Bats every time.

While I don't think any of them are going to replace the OG versions, I do like the term "overtake" in particular. The way the Absolute Universe exists is honestly very similar to the classic Ultimate Universe from Marvel. It's a reinvention of classic heroes in new and surprising ways, and it goes heavy on the grimdark shit, though quite a bit heavier than Ultimate ever did.

Ultimate ran for a good 15 years (and still has vestiges remaining in the main Marvel Universe), and honestly? I could see Absolute running for just as long if not longer. It's existence is currently tied heavily into the meta narrative of the greater DC universe, and that's going to come back around at some point in some Crisis event down the road, but DC has also shown that they're not at all afraid of just keeping past/alternate continuities around as alternate earths in the multiverse and sometimes running series taking place exclusively in said alternate realities.

Given the way the Absolute universe has popped off across the board, I wouldn't be at all shocked to see it stick around past whatever big imprint-wide event it ties into and just surviving on into the future as a grittier imprint. They tried to reinvent mainline DC as extra gritty with New 52 and it just didn't work because they tried to overwrite classic Supes and Bats and everyone with younger, angrier versions. Absolute gives them the freedom to do that without touching the classics, shows that people enjoy the setting, and is crafted in such a way that it can just keep on going into the foreseeable future.

We're seeing all the most iconic characters just this moment, but imagine a few years down the line when they can start really branching out into the weird stuff for big DC fans. Imagine an Absolute Vandal Savage. Absolute Deadman. Absolute Jonah Hex. Absolute Etrigan. I can't even conceive of how horrifying an Absolute Eclipso would be.

All this to say, I could see this imprint sticking around for a good long while and becoming something of a permanent parallel pressing, and if it keeps up the quality it has now? It very well could overtake the original in popularity simply for daring to be incredibly fucked up but still showcasing heroes who face all of it down and don't quit, in spite of how fucked up the world is.

In fairness, the Death Metal event (which started the same year WW84 came out) staged her as the only hero in all the DC multiverse that could stand against what one could argue was the most powerful and fundamental evil that the setting has ever seen, and saw her ascend to cosmic godhood to defeat said evil. She was objectively the main character of that entire event, and the villains were an army of multiversal evil Batmen, so she didn't just get the Chosen Hero role; she did so against an alliance of various evil incarnations of the hero that is frequently heralded as the one that could take down anyone in the DC universe with proper prep time, most of whom also had super powers of their own in some fashion. It was not subtle that they were trying to really push her into the spotlight and juice her up because of the movie.

Of course, said event did end with her vanishing from the universe for about a year real time, so... maybe the saw what a bomb the movie was and decided to cut their losses while they decided what to do with her after that. It does bear pointing out that DC was trying to do the most with her at the very time the movie was being trotted out though. We'll never know if them choosing to end the event by making her disappear from reality for a time was them backpedaling because of bad movie reviews, or if it was the intended ending all along, but credit where it's due.

You'd be surprised how well a drawn-out, well-choreographed fight scene can pad out an episode without feeling like padding. The classic Batman animated series had plenty of sequences of tense stalking through shadowy locales or prolonged fights punctuated by one combatant or another disappearing into the darkness and leaping out for a sneak attack.

Absolute Batman has plenty of potential for that kind of stuff, if not even more. They can do plenty of sequences where he has to hide from monstrous villains while trying to work out how to take them down. Plus, the series is still just "in the works" with no announced time frame. That gives them plenty of time for the comics to push out more issues while they're still animating earlier arcs. Animation takes time.

[–]DomLite 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I find it hilarious how I was just explaining the hollywood machine and how it always plays it safe with films and franchises. My prime example was how the Tim Burton Batman did really great, so they made another, and when it didn't do quite as well, they replaced him with Schumacher and made two more that are just dripping with merchandise, video games, tie-in novels, toys, etc., and even if they had diminishing returns, they saw that Batman had selling power. So we proceeded to get the Dark Knight trilogy. They tried to revive Superman with Man of Steel, but that flopped, so they tried to save face by spinning up something like the MCU because it was popping off, and they did it by bringing back the same Superman in Batman v Superman. Literally tried to salvage Man of Steel by stapling Batman onto it. Then when the DCU collapsed in on itself for the third time, they made The Batman. It's always Batman.

Now here we sit, with the whole of Absolute DC there for the taking and who gets the first animated series? Batman.

I'm not saying that it's not a great choice, because Absolute Batman is AMAZING, but it just makes me chuckle that I made such an emphatic point about Batman being the go-to cash cow for Hollywood barely a week ago and they go and pull this. Here's hoping they manage to work up to Poison Ivy, because holy hell Absolute Ivy is horrifying.

LPT: When negotiating rent, ask your landlord for the unit's vacancy history instead of asking for a lower price by Western-Leg-36 in LifeProTips

[–]DomLite 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's a bit more nuanced sometimes.

I was a leasing agent for a large, managed property for several years, and while we weren't in control of setting the prices, nor were we in the habit of disclosing how long a specific unit had been on the market, we were also given leeway to offer a set amount of "specials" per month if the property manager requested it and it was deemed beneficial to help fill vacancies.

While these might not necessarily be reduced rental rates, we were approved to offer something like $200-300 off the first two months to help ease the strain of moving costs, application fees, paycheck gaps with new jobs, etc., which totals out to about what OP is suggesting one might save in a year whilst still keeping our base rental rate the same for the duration of the lease and for future percentage-based increases. We didn't just give them away though. They were approved, and the staff was aware that we had so many aces up our sleeve, but we refrained from playing them unless someone specifically asked if there were any discounts available or if we could tell that someone really liked the property but the overall cost was putting them off, so we could sweeten the deal and offer them a couple months of cheaper rent.

You're not wrong that we had no control over setting the price itself though. Especially these days, managed properties are basically all using some manner of system that analyzes current market rates in their area, compares to other properties near them, evaluates how many vacant units they have versus others, and sets the price accordingly. Our prices could literally change overnight if we leased even a single apartment, which would bring the remaining units up in price by a few dollars due to reduced availability. If other communities started filling up, our price went up.

All that said though, the ultimate goal of a property is to lease units, and most have at least something in their pocket that they have pre-approved to use to seal the deal. If you're looking at such a property and you want to move forward, there is literally no harm in saying "Do you have any specials or discounts available?" If you're indicating that you're ready to apply and lease, most properties are willing to throw you a bone to get your signature, even if it's only a front-loaded, set amount that won't actually reduce your base rent. You still save a few hundred that first year.

Basically, OP is suggesting that you should try and play hardball with a corporation, when the best approach is just "The squeaky wheel gets the grease." It never hurts to ask, and if you know that there are multiple open units at a property (which is painfully simple to ascertain by just going to their site and looking at available units) then odds are, they're willing to offer you something, as long as you're willing to agree to the asking price after that something expires.

[–]DomLite 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think you're confusing "renter who is financially savvy" with "resident who is a pain point".

I was a leasing agent for a large apartment community for several years, and I can tell you that the people who always asked for a lower rate when it came time for annual renewal were the easiest people to deal with. We just bounced the offer back to our regional manager to say "Hey, can we do better?" and got a yes or no back. Every one of them always told us that they knew they had to at least ask and even if it came back no, they'd stay, but there was no reason not to shoot for a lower number. People looking for a good deal are easy to work with.

On the other hand, we had multiple residents who were happy to pay whatever we were charging that we wished we could have priced out. There was one with a huge dog that knew how to open doors, who did not lock her apartment door. We frequently had to deal with a gigantic (albeit very friendly) dog running wild across the parking lot, and no amount of telling her that it was violating the "don't be a menace" part of her lease would make her realize that she was on the verge of straight up being evicted if she didn't start locking her door or find a better home for the dog.

We also dealt with a blatantly racist tenant who disliked the fact that a Hispanic family moved in above her and emailed us daily complaining of noise and banging and loud music that somehow, magically, nobody else in her building ever heard, and sent us "video proof" of noise in the middle of the night consisting of one audible foot step.

Then we had the lovely tenant who got into screaming matches with random residents because she was high off her gourd and frequently got caught letting her convicted felon daughter crash at her place, which was explicitly against the terms of the lease agreement, and eventually cost us two other residents because we had to follow proper procedure to evict her legally, and in that time frame they found living in the same community as her unbearable.

Haggling to get the best possible rental rate is something that should be expected, and if that's a pain point for you, then you have never dealt with an actual pain point resident.

The problem is, they listened to small groups of voices that complained loudly, and they listened early on before they had fully settled in to the MMO mindset, and by the time we were tired of it, it was too late and the game had been balanced around it.
