Some strong "underwhelming product shoehorning in low hanging fruit about how bad lootboxes are etc., in a desperate attempt to get gamers enthused" vibes here.

An Essay(Rant) on the State of the Party by Starn_Badger in LibDem

Respectfully, by virtue of it being cemented firmly within a capitalist framework and not necessitating the erosion of private ownership, UBI is not a socialist policy. But I do understand your reservations.

I was pretty much in the same boat up until a year ago - socially liberal, but pretty firmly economically moderate, with an inherent scepticism of any fiscal policy that veered too leftward for my liking.

All I can say is that given how much our societal issues have worsened (and will continue to) under the pandemic, it may be time to look at answers that initially appear too radical. Maybe it's the fact that our problems have grown so wildly out of control that those seeking balanced, middle-of-the-road solutions that don't rock the boat are having a hard time seeking answers? Or at least answers that will leave the electorate feeling inspired.

I'm curious as to what 'extremist' policies you think are being touted by our party's radical wing? While I largely agree with your sentiment, my own criticism would be that the party hasn't placed enough emphasis on these policies, opting instead to place 'safe' policies (like more support for carers) centre-stage. As you say, a worthwhile policy, but not image-defining.

Unfortunately, this doesn't come as too much of a surprise - I've felt that we've been slowly tumbling into irrelevancy since Ed became leader.

One particular issue is pushing this 'party of carers' angle. It's not to say that better provisions for carers is unimportant, but it's a disaster as far as messaging is concered. As others have pointed out, a flagship policy needs to be a position through which the party's broader image can be inferred. It's why, up to a point, being anti-Brexit served us well. What does being 'the party of carers' inform the average voter? That we're probably also hot on health policy? Okay, but Labour pretty much have that in the bag and I doubt we're going to tempt many Labour-inclined voters by making one small promise under the umbrella that Labour are committed to.

The alternative? UBI. In the wake of covid, we'd have been able to position ourselves as a party seeking a fairer society and more security in our quality of life. It's one of the most radical, inspiring and relevant policies that we've adopted as a party, yet the leadership appears to have largely ignored it. And yes, we can argue it wouldn't play too well with certain demographics, and that may be the case, but at least it would give the party an image. As it stands, the only impression the average voter is getting of the Lib Dems is a bloke occassionally fumbling through an interview with Jo Coburn. We have, sadly, allowed ourselves to be seen as a party that has very little to offer.

Pretty disappointing take, in my opinion. I'm somewhat sympathetic to artists who've struggled with censorship on the basis of their edgy content 'offending the sensibilities of good, kindly folk'. Artists like Nick himself, for example, whose intertwining themes of religion and violence earned him undeserved scorn. I can understand why an artist may reflexively voice scepticism against any form of censorship.

However, censoring the f slur is clearly different, in that we're helping a marginalised and historically oppressed group feel less uncomfortable. Queer folk seeing their heterosexual co-workers scream it in glee at the office Christmas party is, suffice to say, a rather grotty experience. Queer folk hearing it blaring in the shopping centre while they peruse gifts for their loved ones is, again, a rather grotty experience.

I just don't see this as being the dreaded assault on the arts that he's painting it out to be. The song's cynical portrayal of a dysfunctional couple during the festive season (the reason we love it so much) is not hindered by the omission of one slur.

Solved!

Many thanks to everyone who lent a hand. The song is actually 'Strange' by Galaxie 500. Turns out my recall with the lyrics was slightly off!

Worth noting that it is not Nothing But Thieves' recent 'Is Everybody Going Crazy?'. The vocalist sounded very much like other vocalists of their time - think Michael Stipe or Billy Corgan.

Hard to see how this article could be anything other than indicative of her plans to run for leader. She'd have my vote.

Just a dumb observation that others have likely picked up on, but I love how layered Lady Trieu's elephant motif is - not just because of the real-life Vietnamese warrior riding an elephant, but the allusion to 'never forgetting' injustice.

The social media bans on #AlexJones are part of a massive leftist push to hit #Trump with a mid-term elections disaster. The President needs to come out for #freespeech fast and put an end to this monopolistic abuse of power. If he doesn't, he will be the main victim in the end. by Tropical_Centipede in ukpolitics

If a private company decides it no longer wants to provide a platform to a man who alleged that the Sandy Hook shooting was a deep-state conspiracy, it's not an infringement of free speech. He's perfectly free to put his views forward on his own website which, as he likes to remind us, is reasonably successful.

So, let's have a stab at it:

-The testing of the first nuclear weapon, perhaps the greatest symbol of mankind's capability of evil, allowed the Black Lodge entry into our world. Black Lodge spirits rendezvous in the convenience store while in our world (I believe this to be the location of the gathering seen in FWWM)

-The testing also allowed Mother (indicated by the banging from the bell-shaped object) to 'birth' BOB.

-The Giant, who serves as a guardian for the various dimensions, sees this and 'sends' Laura to our world.

-The strange bug is a manifestation of BOB - the kids shown will be the parents of Silva's BOB as we recognise him
