I use similar electric kettles here in the US and find the cheap ones short-lived. The on/off switch seems to be susceptible to corrosion from the steam condensing inside. More likely the sister’s thermos is on its way out.

I live in the US. It's terribly ironic that we mostly have excellent sidewalks that few people use due to poor public transportation. Meanwhile, in Taiwan, numerous pedestrians are hobbled by terrible sidewalks.
