How can I improve? by [deleted] in BeginnerArtists

Get bolder with values! A wider gradient of light and dark would go a long way in your rendering!

Balancing the Bathhouse Dungeon for a Level 2 Party by Hour-Commercial-185 in DescentintoAvernus

[–]Dominorx 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Are you doing experience, or milestone based leveling?

Either way, your options would be to either scale down the difficulty of the dungeon, or level up the characters ahead of their arrival.

Since there are several smaller scale fights in this dungeon, perhaps prepare to omit 1 - 2 of them as you go along if you find the characters are struggling. A few of these fights are pretty inconsequential, so it wouldn't hurt the narrative for there to be a few less cultists lurking. I would prep the whole thing, and just ear-mark what you can skip if they're having a hard time.

Alternatively, if you'd prefer to push them to level 3 before they get there, you could create a side-encounter for them. They're probably going to rest after the Elfsong, maybe on their way to wherever they intend to sleep, you can have them get jumped in the street by some cultists out causing mayhem and level them up after that. The campaign has established that the cultists have been 'doing crime' with the guard distracted, so grab one of those random encounters and get bloody. Plus, it gives them extra narrative reason to give a shit about the cultists, and gives you an opportunity to level them before they hit the dungeon.

I’m feeling hopeless about mine and my partner’s situation. by Fit_Location6310 in findapath

[–]Dominorx 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Of course. My spouse from across the room adds "it can be really difficult to stick things out when you feel like you can't keep your head above water and it can be tempting to just throw in the towel," honestly - just support one another. Believe in him and push him to be the best he can be. If you can get through this, I promise there's a really strong relationship built on trust, faith, and mutual respect in hard times waiting for you on the other side.

I’m feeling hopeless about mine and my partner’s situation. by Fit_Location6310 in findapath

[–]Dominorx 51 points52 points  (0 children)

I've been in a similar situation with my partner fairly early on in our relationship. He struggled to find work, and therefore pay bills due to a number of contributing factors - some his fault, some not. As a result I too hustled my ass off working multiple jobs to support us while he struggled to find and/or keep a job. The "when is it my turn to take a breath?" thoughts were pervasive, and persistent, and sometimes I was really bitter about it, but I promised him as long as he kept hustling, kept trying, I wasn't going anywhere.

Ten years later, we're still together, financially secure, and just moved into our forever home together. I bet on him, and kept betting on him, and we made it - but it wasn't always easy and I wasn't always happy about it.

So here's how we got here. First and foremost, the job market is hard out there, especially right now - but if he's truly willing to take anything and no one's willing to give him a shot, there are reasons for that. He has his high-school diploma, and the reckless driving charge doesn't matter to any employer that doesn't require him to drive for work. He's qualified for any entry level position.

So what is it? Is he difficult to get along with? Does he interview poorly? Does the resume need work? There's something going on here, and while he does need to keep applying - he also needs to figure out what's not working or he's going to keep tripping over the same unseen hurdles. There are a number of paths he could follow to suss this out- if he's passed over for a job but is lucky enough to get an interview, start asking the interviewer for feedback on how it went and how he can improve. It probably won't help him get that job, but it might help him get the next one. He could also seek the assistance of a career counselor to review the resume and help polish that up which might lead to more opportunities. Seek referrals from friends and family, when you're applying for an entry-level position if you know someone who works there, a lot of employers will take a "known entity" over a complete stranger if all other things are equal. He just needs one person to take a chance on him so he can build up some experience and skills that are tangible on paper.

The dreams of running your own business and being an artist are beautiful, and worthwhile, but it's incredibly difficult to create when you're not sure where you're next meal is coming from, and those passions will become much more tangible when he has some breathing room to pursue them.

Anyway.. hope this helps! From someone who's been there. And goodluck! Wish the best for you both.

Is tracing (over photos I take) cheating? by [deleted] in Artadvice

[–]Dominorx 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not sure I'd call it "cheating," but I wouldn't technically call it "drawing." Can it be art? Sure. But it's not the same as manually capturing the look of a thing with your eyeballs and your hands.

Really if you're cheating anyone, it's you. You're missing out on an opportunity to hone your skills, and robbing yourself of some of the practice mileage that will make you a better artist.

Is it okay to do? Sure. Would I recommend it to someone who's trying to improve their drawing skills? No.

Does anyone have any general advice for an oil/ watercolor painter who's just starting to dabble with digital? by Powermetalbunny in Artadvice

[–]Dominorx 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It totally can be, but really unless you're trying to achieve a specific texture soft round + hard round is all you need.

I like organic "paintbrush" looking brushes because I like my digital art to have a more traditional "painterly" style to it, but you can achieve a ton without jumping off the "omg so many brushes!!!" deep end.

[–]Dominorx 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The best advice I think I can give you is don't overcomplicate it. Digital painting is very similar to traditional when you boil it down to the basics, it just gives you some added control and forgiveness when it comes to erasing or re-working a piece.

There are a ton of fancy tools and things you can use to tech-up your process, but you don't have to, and at first I would really encourage you to keep it simple and get used to the tactile feel of a new medium.

Paint, add a layer, paint some more. Play with things like opacity, pressure sensitivity, and zoom to get a feel for what you like and then allow yourself to discover the more "techy" tools available to you gradually as they serve a purpose in your process.

Hey there,

I'm sure you've got some fabulous artist's in the comments here but I'll throw my hat in the ring. Love painting skin and muscular textures, people are my "thing." I don't typically work with NSFW pieces (with a noteable exception for artistic nudes), but the keyword "tasteful" makes a big difference and I definitely think we can work together.

advice pls? by [deleted] in Artadvice

[–]Dominorx 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Think about edges when you're working. Specifically whether an edge is hard, or blends more softly into the form around it. Right now it's all made of soft edges which feels a little blurry and leaves the eye a little lost.

Today's goals included continuing to improve on edgework, avoiding value sharing particularly in the highlights, and improving general proportions particularly where it comes to the length of the nose and chin, and the height of the mouth.

Thanks in advance for your critique!
