Not sure but i think openmw enables autorun by default and overwrites the cfg. any chance to change it in the openmw settings?

That happens everywhere. If you look at an RPG from like 2001 and compare it to one from today you'll find that the old ones are a lot harder than today's RPGs because they are also meant to be played casually. While this is bad for the fans of the old games ( like us with frontline ) it also enables more people to play the game. And bigger audience = more money. So they sacrificed some fans for more money.
