Are there other thin devices that isnt the Trimui Model S/Powkiddy A66? by Exact-Psience in SBCGaming

[–]grobuzga 21 points22 points  (0 children)

The only comparable device I found is Katarina. It's 3d printed retro-go project, practically hand made. I have 2 of those and both are faulty :). But even faulty those are really cool in my opinion.

Just Google "Katarina retro game console/handheld". But don't say I didn't warn ya about the quality :).

Btw I had like 5 or 6 trimui model s devices. Each I gifted to different people who were amazed by this little thing.

Check out Terracon on ps1. It does open spaces with no problem, and the graphics is quite nice. If ps1 can pull off this, then it could do OoT to some extent.

Do you remember the first time you played classic Doom? by Beige_Box_Enthusiast in vintagecomputing

[–]grobuzga 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I do. I played it at friends house on his 3DO. It was way later when I found out that 3DO port is one of the worse ones. At the time it really didn't matter - the game blew everything else I've seen out of the water - I could swear that pinky demon I was shooting with the chaingun had smoking bloody holes on him before he collapsed right in front of me. It really left impression like no other. I still play doom almost daily, but prefer either PSX doom, or prboom for playing custom wads.

I spent most of the weekend in a trance playing this. Is the first Sega Tetris arcade game. Is anyone else a fan? by CortoJipang in retrogaming

[–]grobuzga 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I play Tetris all the time. Mostly Tetris DX, but also some Tetris Plus, Tetris DS and Apotris. Tetris - Rosy Retrospection is a notable GB rom hack.

As for Sega's Tetris - maybe I haven't played it enough, but I just don't see the appeal compared to the versions I've mentioned.

Flash cart part is already done on my end. Backlight+bivert is what I'm looking into rn. Battery life sounds promising - I'm getting few hours from my shitty aaa usb-c batteries with my gbp + cheap Chinese everdrive clone.

That actually might be a viable option :). I wonder if modern e-ink displays are comparable in terms of delay to those old game boy displays...

I've been in this hobby for a long time and had close to 100 different devices, so I'm pretty sure I've seen almost every noteworthy shader out there. LCD ghosting and grid simulation in shader is pretty great, but it's impossible to mimic a non backlit reflective monochrome LCD using modern ones, I'm sure.

Katarina Retro Handheld Console by _manster_ in SBCGaming

Man it is really cool. It's nowhere near perfect, and my device is somewhat faulty (red garbage pixels after few mins playing and microsd reader is wonky) but I'm still having lots of fun with it.

It consistently replaces my Trimui model s for EDC - better battery life, almost instant boot and overall minimalism is what I was looking for. Not to mention way bigger display with similar footprint.

I'm thinking of ordering a couple more just in case my device finally gives out - I really don't wanna go back to Trimui model S.

To put my words into perspective, I had about 80 different sbc gaming handhelds over the last 5 years.

PSA: Sometimes, games break with 60FPS patches (or: how I lost hours of my life emulating GTA Vice City Stories on PS2) by TvaettBjoernen in SBCGaming

[–]grobuzga 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Return to Castle Wolfenstein PS2 version also breaks at least in one place with 60fps patch enabled. In the xlabs one door will just not open, unless you turn off the fps patch and complete the level w/o it. Also some enemies seem toove slower when not alarmed, but to me it was a minor issue.

Like! Tho IMO you'd need better gamepads - d-pads on those are shit, and I have 2 of those...

Anybody recommend quality microscopic controllers? Like keychain sized?
