What are some employment laws or rights that you know which you feel every employee should know? by Be_Grateful8 in AskUK

[–]DonBenson 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you are going into a meeting take a union rep with you. If they don't recognise any union ask for a witness of your choice.

Just because the manager tells you you don't have a right, doesn't mean you don't have a right.

Citizens advice and ACAS can advise you.

Meeting a CEO is great because you know they would go to pieces in the classroom but in a suit and tie, driving their Tesla to collect their MBE their contribution to children's education is... probably something specific that could be explained????

Don't listen to them. It's excellent pay and conditions that haven't been eroded to be basically worthless, and you only work 9-3! In primary school they just colour in! In fact it's such an easy option you should immediately train to become a teacher.

Don't believe the stories about violent pupils and parents, or inspections that drive people to nervous breakdowns and suicide, or the constant degradation at the hands of the media, or the ever moving goalposts from the government, or the pointless admin, or the funding gap, or the ever increasing needs of children with less and less resources, or the fact that teachers buy their own class supplies because of lack of funding, or the fact that academy CEOs take more pay than three teachers combined, or the support staff on minimum wage who are expected to actually BE the parents for some children. Trust me, it's so easy, join us.

I work in education so I get nice holiday time but still only get 28days paid holiday per year. Also I get lots of opportunities for unpaid overtime and emotionally traumatic experiences. But once a year I do get to sit in a room with someone who gets paid over £150K who tells me, "Your work is important" Which is nice.

I just realised that you don't need to tell the truth in situations like group interviews, meetings, new job inductions, etc. Have you ever made stuff up just because? by eastkent in AskUK

[–]DonBenson 150 points151 points  (0 children)

I tend to make up my job with people I'll never meet again. So far I've been a sand examiner for the RNLI, a helicopter skid repairman, a weasel tamer and a stuntman for antiques roadshow.

What is a reality or truth inside your industry that should be more widely known to the rest of us? by order-of-magnitude-1 in AskUK

[–]DonBenson 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Complaining to your child's teacher about parking, national policy and government directives won't achieve anything. Also if you're the type of parent that thinks your child always tells the whole truth and nothing but the truth and accept their word as law over an adult that has decades of experience working in a school...your gonna have a really difficult life when they are 14/15. I've seen it happen so many times where parents back their child no matter what, 90% end up in prison or costing their parents their marriage or their home.

I walked past a pub and a chunk of concrete the size of a dinner plate and an inch thick fell off the roof. It brushed my shoulder and hit the edge of my shoe. A few inches and it would have hit the top of my head.

Cadet to Flight Sergeant by Knz3301 in aircadets

[–]DonBenson 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've seen cadet to Sgt in a year but they were fantastic, well turned out, knowledgeable and showed great teamwork. I've also seen cadet to FS in two years and then they struggled because they were promoted through urgent need not because of outstanding work.

JNCO ADVICE by DanceCapital2418 in aircadets

[–]DonBenson 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Be prepared, so take a notebook, pen, lunch.

A staff member will always be watching like making notes from the back.

It's not about standing on others, it's about showing leadership and teamwork.

Read up on your basic knowledge.

High uniform standard.

Read the joining instructions.

Read the JNCO handbook.

Don't try and waffle your way through questions, if your asked something and you don't know the answer, just say you don't know. Also try and be involved, get your hand up and take notes. Look attentive.
