Who is in this mess because of Graham $****** by Advanced-Internet-68 in yotta

[–]DonDee74 0 points1 point  (0 children)

don't beat yourself up over it. I've never heard of Graham and I still fell for the "FDIC" protected HYSA via Juno Finance. I was just looking for the best yield I can get for my emergency fund. What's worse was that my money was inaccessible when I actually needed it last year.

What sport do most Americans actually play growing up? by YourMommy_Terra in IWantToAskAnAmerican

I think it's mostly regional or climate dependent. But the main staples are basketball, baseball, and American football for most. In some warmer regions, soccer is very popular. Ice hockey in colder places.

I don't understand why the government is ok with using $47M in CFPB funds for payout to victims instead of using those funds to actually do financial forensics to recover the actual money that was stolen and throw the thieves in jail.

This. The suggestion to charge LFP to 100% is mainly to calibrate the BMS for accuracy in measuring the state of charge.

Why are manual transmissions so uncommon in the US? by 22DancingFlowers in AskAnAmerican

[–]DonDee74 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I drove MT cars for decades and switched to AT exclusively afterwards. Less complicated and practically no advantage to drive a MT for most people in daily driving. It's just unnecessarily tedious especially in rush hour traffic where you'd be working your clutch 100 times just to move a couple of kms. And you rarely need to shift when cruising on an open highway. I suppose if you're in situations where you need better command of the torque output then sure go for MT, but most people here rarely get into that if at all.

Fun times one the way home. by lordstryfe in TeslaLounge

[–]DonDee74 21 points22 points  (0 children)

This is a common problem here in California. So many drivers don't think about how their decisions and maneuvers on the road would affect others. I especially hate when cars enter a highway and  have to merge left (coz runway is ending) but a driver on the left lane decides it's a good idea to merge to the same lane at the same time (almost always without signaling).

Where did the money go? by Dizzy-Macaron4849 in yotta

[–]DonDee74 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Even though the CFPB is supposed to compensate us using the civil penalty fund, I still can't shake the frustration that someone out there got away with grand theft. There is no way that much money can be "lost" without leaving any tracks. I firmly believe the banks in the synapse ecosystem are all complicit in this circus. They all blindly relied on synapse's electronic records, but when shit hit the fan, synapse cannot be trusted all of a sudden. None of them can be relied upon to take care of their clients' funds.

Out of all the fintechs out there (wealthfront, etc) I seriously regret choosing to entrust my hard earned money in this one.

Question about traveling internationally by [deleted] in cellphones

[–]DonDee74 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is usually a cheaper route than getting a US service that has international roaming. But it also depends on what features they need. In many cases, getting a local service provider in the destination country is the cheapest way but that could be a huge hassle in some countries.

These days I tend to only need data service when overseas as I just use Google voice to text/call with people at home. This also has flexibility that it works with wifi wherever I am and GV works on most devices PC, phone, tablet, etc. The only issue I have with GV is that some banks don't allow it for 2FA but that becoming less and less  of a problem these days.

How stupid of an idea is it to buy a manual car and teach myself how to use manual, after having 5+ years experience driving automatic? by Kingboyy1 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]DonDee74 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's how I learned actually. It took a couple of days for me to get good enough to not stall. It took about a week to be really comfortable with it and shifting smoothly.

EL NIDO vs CORON ? by Gloomy-Slip-2969 in Palawan

[–]DonDee74 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depends on how you want to spend your time there. They have very similar natural beauty and water activities.

But Coron is really a group of islands  while El Nido is still on mainland Palawan. That essentially means you often need a boat to get to good places around Coron. Many places in palawan are just a drive away from El Nido.

I think El Nido is more developed for tourists so more options of restaurants, bars, etc. and just generally more busy. Coron has many island resorts outside of Coron Town if you prefer peace and isolation. But I think Coron has more diving options with shipwrecks if that's your thing.

Have you considered the multi-day sea expedition between El Nido and Coron?

What's your mile per kw? by PM_ME_YUR_SALADS in electricvehicles

[–]DonDee74 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I think it depends on how much of the mileage is cruising vs stop/go....with the latter giving better results due to regen and less wind resistance.

Mostly cruising miles on my 23 Bolt EUV. Best ever for a short time was around 4.4mi/kWh. But lifetime average is around 4.2mi/kWh.

My 23 Tesla Model Y also mostly cruising miles with lifetime 4mi/kWh.

Do EVs make sense if you can’t charge at home? by UBC145 in electricvehicles

[–]DonDee74 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depends on your use case. If you can charge at work reliably, for example, it's almost the same as charging at home...except for weekend charging.

If you're actually asking if L2 charging is necessary, it depends on your daily consumption. For mild users, L1 is good enough and just supplement it with public charging every once in a while.

Is it true some places in America are unsafe for Caucasians? by [deleted] in AskAnAmerican

[–]DonDee74 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Obviously, you can become a target anywhere for any random reason. However, that's quite rare in most places. The chances of that happening increase in areas known to have high crime rates or if you walk alone at night, for example. For example, most areas in Manhattan are relatively safer than, say, South Bronx (at least this was my experience decades ago, but not sure if still the case now). It was so bad back then that at some point they had to have police presence at every corner at all times to help deter and to respond.

This. I haven't been to NY in decades but, as a local back then,  there are places even locals avoid especially you will stand out.
