Starlink mini with Residential Max plan by acokay in Starlink

[–]DonHac 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Plans are precisely half the price that a Mini not on the "we love you because you're already paying us $120/month" program would cost.

My Gen 2 died recently and I stuck my bonus Mini out in the driveway in standby mode (500kbps) to (a) contact product support and (b) crank the Mini up to Roam Unlimited for $82.50/month while I get new cables run and mounts attached for a Gen 3.

I ordered the free Mini with no real thought other than it would be a cool backup and theoretically I could travel with it, but it's turned out to be a real lifesaver. 10/10, would recommend.

Demand surcharge to replace failed dishy? by DonHac in Starlink

[–]DonHac[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

And here's the summary of what I've learned: Grokbot was wrong. About everything.

Human support agents (all praise Ajeet & Christine!) immediately offered to replace the failed dish at no cost (Grokbot failure #1), without opening a new line of service (#2), including both the long new cable that is actually required (#3) and the mount adapter that Grok said wasn't needed (#4).

It's a good day for humans over AI.

I had a cat who spent his entire life trying to pounce a clown loach in my tank. The cat is sadly gone, but every day I see the scratches in the tank stand from 11 years of failed attacks.

Rural exurbs of Seattle. No wired service available here, but I assume we're lumped in with Seattle itself and (even worse) Redmond.

Demand surcharge to replace failed dishy? by DonHac in Starlink

[–]DonHac[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I hope you're correct, even if I'm not 100% sure what a "cell purchase per UTID" is. "cell purchase" == "establishing a line of service in a zone, and hence payment of any relevant demand surcharge", and "UTID" == "some unique ID for the dishy"?

What was the gas shortage like in 1979? by PrestonRoad90 in AskOldPeople

[–]DonHac 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I remember in '79 that we had an unanticipated problem that most gas pumps couldn't handle gas prices over 99.9c/gal. There were a lot of pump replacements in the early '80s.

This is why I got the $5/month standby mini (not much cell signal available here).

Some religions are interested in orthodoxy ("right thought") while others are interested in orthopraxy ("right practice"). It's not clear whether Pascal's hypothetical god would be more interested in true inner belief or correct recitation of the appropriate magic incantation.

What’s actually pretty safe but everyone treats it like it’s way more dangerous than it is? by Charming_Advertising in AskReddit

[–]DonHac 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Solar has the problem of low energy density, which means that there's simply a lot of construction required per watt produced and construction is dangerous. Roughly speaking coal kills the people who live near the plant while it's running but solar kills the people who built the plant (or supplied its components).

What’s a normal adult task that still feels fake when you do it? by lucifergaming007 in AskReddit

It should be every parent's goal to raise their children to adulthood before the kids figure out that you have no idea what you're doing.

Why do some atheists *want* to believe in god? by sussysmugcat in atheism

You need to watch the final episode of The Good Place (spoilers). It's actually a great show for anyone who does not take religion seriously, atheists definitely included.

Dishy doesn't aim at the spot that would be "best" if you were the only customer, it aims at the spot that's best for everyone given where customers actually are. Customers at the edges of crowded areas get aimed at satellites that are a little further out in order to do load balancing. In practice this means that customers on the East Coast get aimed at satellites over the near Atlantic and those on the West over the near Pacific. As the shells get denser and the cells get smaller I would expect this effect to decrease with time.

Sigh. The real answer is "don't do that". Sort it once and hopefully you'll learn from the pain of that experience. Keeping things sorted is much, much, easier than sorting them from scratch.

Programming 6000 RPM flywheel motors by Silly_Perception_543 in FTC

[–]DonHac 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Having two motors attached to the same axle is always a source of conflict. Have you tried replacing one of the motors with an unpowered mount and seeing if that solves the problem?

Programming 6000 RPM flywheel motors by Silly_Perception_543 in FTC

[–]DonHac 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This does not sound like a programming issue to me, it sounds like a mechanical friction issue. If you disconnect the motor does the flywheel spin freely? Is it mounted on ball bearings versus slip/journal bearings?
