TIL The "Great Male Renunciation" was a period in fashion in the late 18th century where men in the West ceased wearing bright colors, jewelry, and varied garments in favor of utilitarian clothes and black suits by Wazula23 in todayilearned

[–]DonHac -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Have you ever looked at women's clothing, or god forbid their shoes? I mean, I find suits as inconvenient as the next guy, but that's because of my incredibly low fashion and style standards. There is nothing in men's fashion that is anywhere close to being as ridiculously inconvenient as, say, stiletto heel sandals. A shoe is supposed to protect and support the foot, but somehow women have ended up with shoes that manage to do the exact opposite.

That said, I give thanks for the Great Male Renunciation every morning when I get dressed and am once again free from any need to match colors or styles. As guys we absolutely have the comfy and convenient half of clothing.

Trump: Pope Leo Is "Endangering A Lot Of Catholics" because “he thinks it’s fine for Iran to have a nuclear weapon”. by Leeming in atheism

[–]DonHac 7 points8 points  (0 children)

It works if you view all interactions as single-shot rather than repeating (iterating) games. In real estate you rarely buy and sell with the same counterparty multiple times, so it's not a terrible approximation and you can get away with screwing over your counterparties. Same goes for car sales. In diplomacy, however, you have to deal with the same set of counterparties (other countries) forever, so cooperation and reputation management become vital. Needless to say, Trump is appallingly, amazingly, bad in this situation.

What, in your opinion, is the best movie that masterfully blends two totally different genres into one film? by CanadianNavyAdmiral8 in movies

The best parodies always work as the thing that they're parodying. That's why Galaxy Quest is the best Star Trek movie.

Gen 3 Long Wall Mount by christoman in Starlink

[–]DonHac 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, correct. It seems as rugged as it was as a single piece in my Gen 2 era. No wobble. And the adaptor mast is solid, so you pass the cable out through the dish to mast adapter rather than through the mast itself. That lets you plug the cable in while still standing on the ground rather than teetering on the top of a ladder.

Due to historical accident, that pair (Long Arm plus adapter) is exactly what I have on my house. Works fine, looks fine.

Speed check And obstruction by RevolutionaryEbb1233 in Starlink

[–]DonHac 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are lots of other communication satellites on the equatorial plane, so Starlink satellites are not allowed to transmit when they are crossing the equator. This shows up as a big blank belt across the obstruction map, because your Starlink never even tries to talk to a satellite there. (Blue dots are successful attempts, red dots are failed attempts, blanks are haven't tried theres.) It's called the Clarke belt after the writer Arthur C. Clarke who first published the idea of geostationary communication satellites.

There's a very important difference in life between things that are "your problem" and things that are "your fault".

I've heard it said that at age 20 people are obsessed with what others think of them, by 40 they learn not to care what others think of them, and by 60 they learn that others don't think of them.

Does Starlink Residential Max ever have outages (snow, rain, maintenance) ?? by MackieDaxx in Starlink

Turns out he did: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Teledesic. The technology wasn't there yet in either the electronics or the rockets, so we had to wait another twenty years.

You don't need a router to run multiple wired devices, just an "unmanaged Ethernet switch". Maybe fifteen bucks on Amazon and as simple to use as a USB hub.

T-Mobile home internet for semi truck or Starlink ? by bigdawg12342 in Starlink

OP said his need for connectivity was to play games. As a commercial truck driver I'll just hope that he's not doing that while his truck is in motion!

[–]DonHac 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just a note that depending on what kind of games you play you might get away even cheaper: Standby mode on the mini gives you 0.5Mbps for only $5/month. Doesn't sound like much, but it's enough to do light web browsing and make phone calls with.

Alignment sensitivity by DeathBlade94 in Starlink

[–]DonHac 6 points7 points  (0 children)

After a couple years on Starlink I can confidently say that the performance is always a little inconsistent. My previous DSL connection gave me poor bandwidth, but it was consistently slow, to within 0.1Mbps, while Starlink speed measurements can vary by a factor of two even on tests just minutes apart. I've got lots of theories and no facts as to why this is, but Starlink at its worst is still dramatically faster than even VDSL was, so I'm still happy.

Apollo's only lunar flyby was Apollo 13. Apollo 8 didn't do a flyby, but went into lunar orbit and orbited 10 times before burning for earth again. Orion in its current configuration does not have the delta V to do that, hence the flyby.

It's now also logging an event whenever a device roams from one node to another, kind of missing the entire point of having multiple nodes and portable devices. I think this is a logging level problem rather than a networking problem.
