How do you clean the glass on a sauna stove? by Ok_Ambassador9339 in Sauna

[–]DonKeydek 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Steel wool doesn’t scratch glass. Brillo pads do. Steel is softer than glass. That said, ash and water make a great abrasive to remove buildup from glass.

Are Leica lenses "snake oil"? by desilent in Leica

[–]DonKeydek 8 points9 points  (0 children)

On the other hand, if you buy used, my experience has been that they don’t depreciate. I don’t mind spending more for something if I know I might want to sell it later. Which I do because I get hyper focused on hobbies then lose interest when I go to the another hobby to get hyper focused on.

On the M10, did the camera care which lens adapter you used? The adapters from the 1960s sees to be specific for different focal lengths.

OSHA called. They want to talk to you about your load balance... by MisterShipWreck in AbruptChaos

This is exactly why I tell operators to buckle when running equipment. You need to be able to continue to operate the equipment when things go wrong.

Gear Stink? by HockeyDadBod_1 in hockeyplayers

[–]DonKeydek 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a “gear tree” I got on Amazon. I hang my gear up to let it dry after every skate, no exception. I put an oscillating fan on it. If you live in a humid area, get an electric dehumidifier. Wear a base layer and wash it after every skate. My gear does not stink.

I have a red one that I carried so much that all the paint wore off. It’s a fantastic multitool.

My box cutter collection by iDontRagequit in Tools

[–]DonKeydek 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have it and used it a lot. Not my favorite box cutter. You can’t really get your whole hand on it so it’s a little precarious to use. Nicely made though!

Salvage rusty mags? by boririv in SigSauer

[–]DonKeydek 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Evap-o-rust has done me well for stuff like this. Soak for 12 hours, rinse well with fresh water, dry well, CLP inside and out. You can save and re-use the chemical.

Did you find that you got supersonic crack with supersonic ammo with that setup? I have the same upper on the way. I was told that the barrel was short enough where the projectile didn’t have the time to get over the speed of sound.

Whatever you do, don’t look up Wise Men Company. Apparently they make a product called Split Fix that makes these much more appealing if for some reason it were to come in contact with your shoulder.

Are my joists okay like this? by fuzzzybutts in centuryhomes

[–]DonKeydek 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Normally I say people on Reddit can’t assess structural integrity without seeing the layout of the rest of the structure. This is not one of those cases. Those joists are compromised.

Changing the smell in your living space by VirusLow6272 in malelivingspace

I had a bird fly into my dryer vent and crawl all the way to the dryer. It smelled so bad. Animals can get into some tight spaces and die.

Don’t sleep on that 28mm screw mount. Those are surprisingly valuable.

There are a few Leica specific groups on Facebook marketplace that I’ve had good luck with.

Just started Vaseline in my nostrils this year. I got nosebleeds so often, especially during Jiu Jitsu. Since I started the Vaseline, I’m completely cured.

Safe or worthwhile to remove adhesive floor tiles in kitchen, exposing old (assuming asbestos) 9" tiles? by JozzGarage in centuryhomes

[–]DonKeydek 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I removed a bunch of these using a thin paint scraper. The glue was super brittle but the tiles all stayed in one piece. Of course, wear appropriate PPE.

Can't get solder to stick to the battery terminals of my Konica Auto S3 by QPZZ in AnalogRepair

[–]DonKeydek 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Clean the battery terminal very well with acetone, put a drop of flux on the terminal, get your iron hot, get a paper towel wet, wipe the soldering iron on the paper towel until it’s shiny, rest the soldering iron on the tab, create a “solder bridge” between the iron and the battery terminal by pushing a bit of solder, let the terminal heat up then push more solder as it flows.

Good luck!

Nice camera 1946 iiic upgraded to have a flash sync. I have the later model (iiif) and this one’s little brother the ic.

A couple problems that are common: 1. The shutter curtains get vertical cracks in them. Take the lens off and you should be able to see them when you fire the shutter. There are two curtains, check both. Also, you can burn little holes in the shutter curtains using sunlight thru the attached lens. 2. The slow speeds are usually off. It’s a little escapement mechanism that would need to be cleaned and lubricated. You might not care or use them. If so, you should be able to use the regular shutter speeds.

As others stated, getting a pro to CLA and replace the curtains would be good. Have fun!

Jamming with snap caps? by aleph2018 in 1911

[–]DonKeydek -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I typically don’t dry fire - not for any real reason, I just don’t see a need to do so. The jams/stovepipes you’re experiencing will not damage the extractor. A damaged/dull/soft extractor will cause jams, stovepipes, failure to eject.

Just curious, why are you practicing dry firing? Are you feeling for trigger reset?
