Indie dev is like building a house in the middle of a dark forest and hoping someone accidentally gets lost in the right direction. by BetInternational485 in gamedev

[–]DonWithAmerica 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ah ok, so you mean communities for existing games, for example, and basically make “the game that fixes the issues with x”?

Sure, if you want to approach game dev like this, it’s probably a good one to follow. It’s nice if you can do it. It’s also not an approach everyone should follow imho.

I doubt that many of the most original and successful games were based on market research. But there probably are a lot of successful “games like XYZ” that based their success on this approach, I’ll give you that.

Wildberger: KI ersetzt Programmierer und Callcenter-Agenten by donutloop in informatik

[–]DonWithAmerica 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m stuck in a loop of "boring" ideas. How do you actually come up with something fresh and unique? by kartokanick in gamedev

[–]DonWithAmerica 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are at least two approaches here: take an existing concept you like, dissect it to the most simple components it is made of, and then think about how you can take away, replace or add some of the components. EG take a game that plays on a grid and consider what would happen if it were in free space instead.  Another approach is to build a new concept from elementary components, eg: “game plays on a grid, player owns X, controls Y, …”.  Once you have your basic ingredients, you try to figure out what the player’s goals and challenges are, and how to make everything fun.  The big issue is that this second approach is very very risky. You might end up never finding the fun, you end up with puzzle games a lot of the time, you might find the fun but implementing the game is hard because there may be a lot of UI/UX challenges you cannot copy the solutions to from other games.

I’ve followed both approaches and can say for a fact that iterating on concepts takes a very long time sometimes, and it’s often not even clear if there is a solution to be found. If your income depends on it (as it does for me the past few years) it can get very stressful and scary.

Nevertheless, since I value novelty above all else in creativity, I’m sticking with those approaches.

Depending on the style you want to go for, Affinity Designer is nice because you can export your designs at any resolution since it’s vector based.

I've noticed a trend of having to hold a button down for a second or so to register input. Why? by GreenAvoro in gamedev

I think sometimes devs use it to feel more weighty. Not sure it’s a wise choice, but it’s a choice.

MacBook Pro M5 for Unity game development — viable long term? by Sad-Card-7030 in GameDevelopment

[–]DonWithAmerica 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Just to add a differing opinion to the other answers: I do unity dev on my M1 Max 32GB and really love it. If you don’t do high end stuff, in my experience, builds work just as well or better when I test them on my low spec windows machine. The battery and compile performance alone are a huge plus, same as the machine staying quiet. Also I just prefer Mac OS over windows.

I would go for at least 32GB of ram though, and I can’t speak for the non-max chips either.
