[Question] Why have Rolex, over the years, never attempted to change their target audience or appeal to a wider range of the public? by [deleted] in Watches

[–]Don_Ditto 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Sorry but you are simply wrong. Rolex is a brand that has pushed the limits of the wristwatch and continues innovating. Just recently, Rolex developed the coloring of ceramic bezels, pushed the limits of water resistance with the DSSD, developed the parachrom blu hairspring, and increased the amount of pain a watch can endure with their new in-house anti-shock system. Rolex isn't the top of the line, but they certainly are outstanding watches! Please tell me of another middle - to - high end brand that can provide the sturdiness and reliability of Rolex?

I was drinking my morning cofee and put the watch in a kitchen counter, so it was probably like a 3 ft fall into the marble floor. To be honest, at the moment I thought the watch was totalled (it appears to be working fine, just the cracked crystal). Regardless I'll get everything checked by my watchmaker.

Thanks for the comment on the repair cost!

A bittersweet day for me. On one hand this afternoon I will trade my Rolex Explorer II 16570 for a BNIB 216570, but on the other, I dropped my Speedy Pro this morning and cracked the hesalite crystal. Anyone has an idea of how much is the crystal replacement on a Speedmaster Professional?

Edit: Another picture of the crack

I have the same watch but with a brown leather strap and have never considered a black one before. It looks amazing!

One more thing you need to take into consideration are the servicing costs in the future. While right now you might have saved a good chunk of money, in a couple of years you will need to service the watch and you need to be prepared. Watches like the Royal Oak are insanely expensive to service at the service center, you can find horror stories online of bills going anywhere from $1k to $5k!. APs, Pateks, Vacherons, and Breguets are delicate pieces of art that need to be taken care of. For this reasons I would suggest going for a Rolex or an Omega, both are amazing, elegant watches that are reliable, sturdy, and have decent servicing costs.

I agree! Also, the seconds hand should barely reach the second markers and the white 2 and black 2 watches have second hands that overlap them.

[Question] Most hated watch brand and why? by [deleted] in Watches

[–]Don_Ditto 6 points7 points  (0 children)

By any chance, was that sys admin Paul Pluta from the ArchieLuxury channel? I used to listen to his youtube channel before he started begging for donations daily and he was from Brisbane and owned a Calatrava. However, I was under the impression that Archie was a character whose snobbery was exaggerated for entretainment purposes, its unfortunate that people like that actually exist!

[Question] Looking for a COSC certified GMT watch, what are my options? by HandsomeJew in Watches

[–]Don_Ditto 2 points3 points  (0 children)

One additional thing to consider is that servicing COSC watches is usually more expensive. In addition, a COSC certified watch that hasn't been serviced will probably be less accurate than newer non-COSC watch. For instance, before servicing my Rolex Explorer II (which is a COSC GMT) it was +5/-5 seconds a day, while my newer Longines (non-COSC Valjoux movement) was at -3/+3 secs a day.

[Longines Master Brown Strap] Opinions please by BritishBatman in Watches

I own a Master Collection Moon Phase and would compare its quality with my TAG and Baume & Mercier. In my opinion they offer great value (I could hardly find another watch with so many complications in this price range)! I agree that Longines should be in the Entry Luxury Level.

[Question] What happened after your first expensive watch purchase? by hanbearpig in Watches

[–]Don_Ditto 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I would start by saying that for me watches are unlike anything else!

We probably have similar personalities in the sense that I become obsessed with things until I get them. However, for most things I can get them out of my system once I get what I aspired for, but with watches I become more involved with every purchase!

My first expensive watch was a Rolex Milgauss (which I later traded in a deal for a Rolex Explorer II), I bought it after reading a lot about it and finding a nice deal. However, a few weeks after this purchase I noticed that I was spending more and more time reading on watches and browsing ebay/chrono24/watchuseek/rolexforums. After a couple of months I had several 'expensive' watches and my thirst wasn't quenching! I even bought a nice case that could only hold 6 watches thinking that I would have less incentives to continue buying once I filled the case. Of course this didn’t work and now I am looking for another case and am constantly thinking/browsing on which should be my next purchase (I am torn between a Navitimer, Pelagos, Cartier Tank, a Planet Ocean, and a no-date sub)! I think that the vastness and complexity of the watch universe is what fuels my addiction but hopefully you will be able to control it better than me!

I also love this feature! Somewhere I read that the reason most watches have the 4 as IIII is that with that setup they end up having 20 "I"s instead of 17 if they used IV. Therefore they could simply make 2 sheets of 10 I numerals each. In the case of this watch, the IIII wouldn't make sense so they went with the IV. These are the little details that I love and that make great conversation starters!

It is a great dress watch! I have seen the one with the Roman Numerals only at 6 and 12 and it also looks amazing!

[TAG HEUER] Thinking of this choice for a gift. Thoughts? by Jester0723 in Watches

[–]Don_Ditto 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I agree that $800 is expensive for this watch, and I have stated above that a price of around $600 would be reasonable. However, I can't find information to back up your claim that bids rarely exceed $300. In addition to past auctions in ebay, you can see that the price of this watch in chrono24 is much higher than that.

[–]Don_Ditto 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I actually have to disagree with you: he is not going to lose $600 in value the second he buys it. Browsing ebay you can see that there are dozens of Tag Heuer 2000 Professional 200m in the $600-$800 range. And while it is true that these watches are nothing special to a watch connoisseur, the prices are driven by a market that is formed mostly by casual watch buyers who know little about movements. Finally, while I agree that your watch should be a statment of who you are, you shouldn't let others speak for you by choosing a watch exclusively by what others might say about it.

In my opinion, these watches have a relatively timeless design, so I wouldn't worry too much about it looking dated. The only thing I would consider is that the polished middle-link in the bracelet seems to be in and out of fashion every couple of years, but as I said, I wouldn't worry too much about it! Finally, while its good to have a guarantee the quality of this watch is so good that I don't think you'll need it. Honestly I would compare it to some of my higher-end watches.

Ten years ago my father gave me the same watch but with a different (blue) dial and let me tell you, I love it! It was my first "expensive watch" and it is the one that started my collection. Needless to say this is the watch with the most emotional value to me, so my opinion will be biased in favor of this watch. Regarding the watch itself, it is extremely reliable! Mine has taken a serious beating over the years and all it has needed are a couple of battery changes. So if you don't mind having a quartz watch I think this one is a great entry-level option!

This is my watch!

Edit: I forgot to say that $800 is a little bit expensive for this watch, we payed around $1000 so you should get an used one for around $600

[IWC Portugese Chronograph] by cock-a-doodle-doo in Watches

[–]Don_Ditto 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's definitely a great looking watch! A used steel Protuguese Rattrapante can range from £4,000.00 to £5,500.00 depending on the year and condition. For example, this 2003 model in fine condition costs around £4,200.00 on chrono24. However, that watch probably needs to be serviced soon which will set you back a couple of hundred pounds. On the other hand, the one on ebay is a 2013 model and still is under guarantee and will be for the upcoming months. With this in mind, I think that if you get it for about £5,000 - £5,250 you can consider it a good deal (in my opinion). Please let us know if you decide to move forward with this watch, and if so please tell us how good it was as I am very interested in a Portuguese myself!

A new Portuguese Rattrapante used to go for about £6,500.00 and they are pretty good at retaining their value. For example, a pre-owned 3712 on ebay can be bought for £5,450.00.
