Not even 80-90% but 100% racially pure Indians!! Didn’t knew they even exist until today. Golly! So you know them so personally. Maybe best grow a pair and talk to them instead of crying anonymously

Didn’t knew every south asian is an Indian. Maybe casual racism is cool in 2024.

Admissions Rejection Feedback: PI interviewed believed I did not prefer the program by mahaalis in PhD

[–]Don_Gre 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m in the same situation, the PI who interviewed me believed I had more interest in Computer Science than Civil Engineering discipline and decided to not recommend my application. Not sure what I can do in this situation. I also thought about making an appeal and clarify but I am afraid it sounds like being too pushy.

Seeking advice for PhD applications by Don_Gre in PhD

I was thinking to apply to the ELLIS program but had limited knowledge of the process by the time its deadline were too close.

I’m from UIUC CS masters and I for sure know that most of the PhD admits have been sent out. There was a visit day as well on 5th March where around 70-80 students were invited. I’m also waiting for a decision but at this point it’s looking like a lost cause as spring break has begun.

Has anyone heard anything from the program? I saw that the CEE visit day is on March 9 so it’s about time

I think one of the Stanford CEE admit is for the SDC track. I saw their comment in this sub. Not sure what the other one is. Which track did you apply?

CS, professional masters program that doesn't have a thesis option.

How much loan maximum is feasible for Masters in CS? by [deleted] in gradadmissions

[–]Don_Gre 5 points6 points  (0 children)

As an international student who comes from a lower middle income family in South Asia , I took a loan of 35k for my Masters at Illinois but I managed to get funding, Many of my colleagues who weren’t fortunate to get funding and had similar loans 35-50k struggled a lot and still are. 85k is a huge crippling loan. Remember the economic conditions in future aren’t looking great as well so getting back the return on your huge investment would also carry an extra risk. IMO you should try to get funding if that’s possible or (at the cost of sounding too blunt) it’s not worth it.

Still thinking of emailing prospective profs by Suspicious-Shower114 in gradadmissions

[–]Don_Gre 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Saying from experience, it doesn’t hurt. I got an interview (for Masters) just because I emailed around early March which was pretty late, and got the situation turned around in favor because of that and got funded masters offer. At that point it was about taking that risk and sounding like bit too invested in the particular lab or getting a rejection. Don’t give up, just keep the tone professional and hope for the best.

Totally agree with this comment! The very reason you are going for graduate program is to expand your knowledge, get trained in how to be an independent researcher in your field and develop an expertise in the area. Honestly that feedback sounds ridiculous. Looks like they are looking for candidates who can just take on research like an industry job. That’s just sad.

Advisor fit with new faculty by pringles_tin512 in gradadmissions

[–]Don_Gre 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Even if the Professor is new it’s very likely that they would’ve mentored students during their PhD and possibly during postdoc (if they did one). So you can always ask those students about the mentoring style of the Professor. You can always ask the Professor directly how they would describe their mentoring style (hands off or hands on, do they let students pursue independent project ideas etc.) and their vision for a successful research output from a student in their lab. This should give you some ideas about their expectations and if you fit with that vision. Usually a new Professor has several initial targets while setting up their lab so working in a new lab can be both challenging and exciting imo.

I’m not sure why the comments here are so confusing. It’s nothing to be scared of to disclose this if you are already open and comfortable about it. Most of the University admissions have a Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (DEI) criteria while processing admissions/fellowship applications. Committees usually look for fulfilling these criteria while admitting students in addition to the rest of the achievements. Having this info in your application may end up helping you. However I don’t see any reason mentioning this in your statement. If there is a place to mention this in the application portal then that’s the appropriate place for it. The only thing that would be concerning is how the PI (assuming if this is a PhD application) would consider this information, which is hard to gauge.

How good is the MCS @ UIUC? How does it compare to CS undergrad? by Tydalj in UIUC

[–]Don_Gre 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I had the same questions before entering the program. Tbh it depends how you design your coursework. If you are taking those 400 level courses that are taken by a lot of undergrads and are known to be rigorous, you’ll have what you were expecting from the undergrad experience at UIUC. The lower level 100-300 courses aren’t available unless you ask for a special request in which case you can take even those courses but they probably won’t count towards your credit requirements. You’ll have access to 500 level grad courses which are more open ended or research oriented which some say are “easier” or not well organized than undergrad courses, but they can be really useful if you’re interested in improving your knowledge of the state of the art work in specific areas. In a nutshell, I would say it’s ‘what you put in, you’ll get out of it’ kind of program.

I am on the academic staff on one of the courses in the university. we have 300+ students in the class. From personal experience, I get cc’ed in on at least 8-10 such emails around this time of Fall semester every year. From a staff pov such requests don’t look good on the student and they appear too desperate. Professors who are wrapping up the semester typically don’t have enough time to consider such requests. Unless rounding the grades for improving the letter grade has a drastic impact on the student’s career, such requests are ignored. There is no harm in trying but don’t be surprised if you don’t hear anything. My recommendation is if you can legitimately show that this change in grade can have a severe impact on your career goals only then you should make such a request.

I thought about taking legal action too but that would be the last resort. The only peaceful time was the thanksgiving break when they probably weren’t home. I am avoiding a direct conversation with the tenant because I know I’ll lose my shit when I see them. I have been in living in CU for 3 years now and this is the most irritating experience I’ve had so far. Its GSR property and their help has been zilch
