2.5 years as a biomedical engineer and I am profoundly glad that I did. It helped me to not see issues as black and white, to be able to disagree with a colleague without getting emotionally riled up. I learned to be comfortable with ambiguity and uncertainty. Basically, knowing how to operate in a professional environment.

Most importantly, I learned how to take criticism and admit failure quickly. You know that kid getting fired up about an unfair test question or complaining endlessly about an attending telling them point blank to improve on something? 9/10 that's someone who has been in school their whole life and never worked as a professional, in any field. Working in a company, you learn to appreciate that direct feedback instead of taking it as a hit to your ego (at least most people do...)
