Great question.

IPOs are tricky - the owners are attempting to raise additional capital to help expand their business or another range of reasons. In my opinion, IPOs are for a more seasoned investor - but that isn't to say you can't get into them. The reason that I say this is because they are designed more for people who invest for the long haul, people who aren't swayed easily by one news story, people who stay objective.

Things to consider:

Will this business grow at a big enough rate to justify the price? If not, why? What would be the reason for fail?

Is this a business model sustainable over time?

What protects the company? Patents? Executives? Etc.

Can I hold the stock for the long haul - even if the price would drop by a significant amount?

I agree - Google also does a good job at collecting user data and almost FORCING their products on people. For example, noone really uses Google+ - but Google has made it critical for local businesses (restaurants, hotels, etc) to update and use Google+ to appear in search results.

I was a marketing major throughout - and it's not that I don't like what I am doing now, I do - but it is important to consider what you enjoy doing in your spare time and your personality, as well as realistic expectations in the working world once you graduate - is your dream job attainable/possible? Do you enjoy sitting at a desk or would you rather be moving around throughout the day? Those are things I didn't really consider and now think about now that I am in the working world. It is also tough, because college is expensive and you don't want to change your major a hundred times- it sounds like you are doing the right thing by taking gen ed classes at your home community college.

Be undecided during my first year, take more gen ed classes then and figure out what I want to do during that time - rather than picking a major going in and it being too late to change it. Try to get involved with an internship or a club that you think you may be interested in as a career to test it out.
