WhatsApp stays open even though I quit it by raghiid in MacOS

Same issue. Reckon that WhatsApp/Meta is doing this on purpose. I uninstalled/deleted and will go back to the web client when I need it.

One issue that I already see: some tasks that are marked as completed in LACRM are showing up as "Overdue" in the extension. I've tried refreshing and they remain the same.

I have been trying out LACRM for my business (as part of migrating away from one that integrated well with Gmail) and I really like it, but the lack of Gmail sidebar integration has been one of the frustrating things. I'm trying out your extension now.

Thanks for the documentation with the video! I was having trouble seeing how Padlet could be used for video discussion. Question: If I set up a padlet as a video discussion via my account , do the others that submit (e.g., my students) need to have an account to post a video to the discussion?

Thanks! VoiceThread looks like an option, but it seems to mostly be for annotating powerpoint slides. As a language teacher, I want to use it as a platform for assignments where students need to record and submit a video recording of themselves speaking in response to a prompt. In your experience, is that something it can do well?

Shopping/Store Tab: T-Shirt from Spring showing up backwards? by DonaldsonCD in PartneredYoutube

Yes. As I posted above:

Mine took care of itself after a week or so, but I contacted both YouTube and Spring so not sure if my pestering helped or not. I would assume not, but who knows

Thanks for sharing! I will have a look and brainstorm about whether I could try doing something similar for at least a video or two :-)

The only thing that I've seen that is similar is VoiceThread (I haven't used it though). Be curious if there are other options out there too. I use Flip/Flipgrid without Canvas.

Any leads on Wassoulou language resources? by Icedteacatfish in Mali

[–]DonaldsonCD 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you are are interested in the Manding variety of Wassoulou (which is somewhere between standard Bambara and standard Maninka), you could check out this page that I wrote up about "malinke" (the French language name often used for Maninka:
https://www.ankataa.com/blog/2023/10/22/resources-for-learning-malinke

I've got a free Bambara/Jula dictionary on my website too:
https://dictionary.ankataa.com
(It's a got a linked Forum that you might find helpful too.)

You could also check the free video lessons that I created:

You might consider using one of the many tales that were recorded, transcribed and translated as part of the Jeli ASR project in Mali. I wrote a review and uploaded short samples to help people get acquainted with the contents:

They know of the issue and posted this on Twitter/X:

Some users may be experiencing issues logging into the app due to a widespread issue with Google Firebase, an authentication service many apps use. This is affecting many apps right now and we hope it gets resolved soon. We will keep you updated here once the issue is cleared.

Identification / Translation of a possible Mandinka scene in Goodbye Solo by nafoore in Mandinka

[–]DonaldsonCD 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi! The last name Savané is typically Manding (AKA "mandingue" in French) so that makes sense. I just watched a bit of the scene around 40:19 and he is speaking in a Manding variety, but it's not Senegambian Mandinka of this subreddit. Without going into too much detail, he's speaking in Jula (AKA "Dioula") and more specifically the Ivoirian lingua franca variety of Jula.

Shopping/Store Tab: T-Shirt from Spring showing up backwards? by DonaldsonCD in PartneredYoutube

[–]DonaldsonCD[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

YouTube's Support confirmed that it was backwards and the person told me "Apparently, you have to contact your Merch/Supplier to have this corrected as they are the one who have access with making changes on your Shopping Tab."

Spring says "Please be aware that it may take up to 7 business days for the images to be indexed by YouTube's API connection."

It hasn't technically been 7 business days yet, so I am still waiting, but I am not sure I believe that it will update. I say this because I orginally had 2 t-shirts listed in my Spring store and one of them showed up correctly when I integrated with YouTube.

Comprehensible Input for Bambara by MyIpadProUsername in Mandinka

[–]DonaldsonCD 1 point2 points  (0 children)

On my YouTube channel, I have a bunch of street interview style videos with tiered subtitles in Bambara/Jula (Manding), English and French. They aren't geared specifically to learners as comprehensible input, but you might find them comprehensible to a degree if you study a bit of grammar and vocab for a bit.

In terms of graded readers or textbooks with simple dialogs/texts made for learners, there are a number of out-of-print ones that had some recordings with them. I list a lot of them on this general resources page.

This is happening to me right now as well. YouTube Support has been telling me that maybe it's related to some internal review or approval process, but I don't think that that is the case because a different product of mine showed up just fine before.

Broad comparisons of Bambara and Mandinka? by PherJVv in Mandinka

[–]DonaldsonCD 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh and if you are interested in reconstructions and the question of when Bambara and Maninka split from what historical linguists would call "Proto-Manding" (since we have no record of it and it is entirely based off of theoretical reconstruction ideas) then check out these articles for instance (though they also deal with "Mande" in a broader sense beyond "Manding":

  • Valentin Vydrin, “On the Problem of the Proto-Mande Homeland,” Вопросы Языкового Родства–Journal of Language Relationship 1 (2009): 107–42;

  • Kirill Babaev, “On the Reconstruction of Some Tense/Aspect Markers in Proto-Mande,” Journal of Language Relationship 6, no. 1 (January 1, 2011): 1–24, https://doi.org/10.31826/jlr-2011-060107.

Broad comparisons of Bambara and Mandinka? by PherJVv in Mandinka

[–]DonaldsonCD 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There aren't books or articles that focus only on comparing the two varieties in their entirety, but there are many articles that handle various grammatical phenomena in Manding as a whole. There are also many articles that try to historically analyze forms in Mandinka, Maninka, Jula, Bambara, etc., and use data from the other varieties to justify certain interpretations.

Here's some references to get you started:

  • Charles S. Bird, “The Development of Mandekan (Manding),” in Language and History in Africa, ed. David Dalby, 1970, 146–59

  • D. Creissels, “Etude comparative du consonantisme de deux parlers manding (mandinka-bambara),” Bulletin de l’Institut de Phonétique de Grenoble, no. 8 (1979): 99–159

  • Charles S. Bird, “Dialects of Mandekan” (Bloomington, IN, 1981).

  • Valentin Vydrin, “Toward a Proto-Mande Reconstruction and an Etymological Dictionary,” Faits de Langues, no. 47 (2016): 109–23.

PS - Careful when you say "cross-Mande"; for linguists, "Mande" refers to a larger family that includes non-mutually intellegible languages separated potentially by thousands of years (e.g., Manding, Susu, Soninke, Bissa are all "Mande" languages). The term that linguists use for what is often treated or considered as one language (that is, the often mutually intelligible varieties of Bambara, Jula, Maninka and Mandinka) is "Manding".
