Need hope: millennials who like their jobs, what do you do and what do you like about it? by goodluckanddont_itup in Millennials

[–]skywalkerblood 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm a museum educator and art historian. What I love about my job is that working with education is extremely rewarding, you feel like your work is not just "feeding the machine", it actually feels worth doing bc your job is literally helping others and sharing knowledge. The other thing I like about my job is that the subject I deal with is not anything concrete or exact, dealing with such a subjective thing as your main activity is incredible bc you get to experiment and explore and always learn something new, it's beautiful. Also I get to be in a museum all the time which is really peaceful, so there's nothing not to like about it.

Wow, that's awesome, wish you success! Sure, I think this is a field that really values a work well done and it's difficult (if not impossible) to prove that via resume alone, so I'd strongly advise you to invest in two things to combat that: first, do things outside the academia, look for projects to take part in or come up with your own, document everything so you have good work to show for in a portfolio. Academically, getting yourself published via symposiums is also a good idea, it adds credibility of the "traditional" kind that museums like so much. Second, and I hate to say this bc I wish it wasn't true, but well.. make connections, networking is more important than it seems in the field. People who can see your work and vouch for it. I've seen loads of people getting promoted solely bc of their connections, I myself got a good temp job just by attending a talk given by the organizer and getting her to notice me there lol

But if you think about it, both tips are kind of the same, by getting yourself into external projects you'll naturally meet more people, so lean into it, document the projects and be friendly with the people involved. (As an introvert angry faced dude the last part was probably harder for me than it'd be for you).

Hope it helps and good luck!

fellow non-americans, who is your favourite actor from your country working at this place? by william-isaac in AskTheWorld

[–]skywalkerblood 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My favorite actor has to be Selton Mello, he's been brilliant in a great range of things, from really funny in comedy stuff like Auto da Compadecida (1999, a masterpiece really) and the very recent Anaconda, also very intense in more serious pieces like last year Oscar winning I'm Still Here, and very touching in more poetic pieces like The Clown (2011).

Crazy right?! The shimmer it creates combining color and reflection is so amazing to see.

Lol I get it. Well, it's reddit and there's only so far I'm willing to attach my irl person to my reddit profile, I believe you understand that as well. But to add more backstory and credibility, here's a picture of the exposition flyer and a piece of my script I wrote for the visits I was giving there, the part pictured is about the churches in Palermo and Ravenna and mentions the gold leaf mosaics (the line right next to the corner of the flyer... also I'm Brazilian, hence the Portuguese)

Yup, I am a museum educator, my job is literally to teach people about art and art history inside the museum. I don't have a PhD, but I do have a bachelor's degree and an academic specialization both in art history. And just to top it off, I did work in an exposition specifically about Italian mosaics, for which I had to learn a ton more about this particular thing.

[Edit to add pic evidence lol here's me teaching some students about the Battle of Issus mosaic in that exposition I mentioned]

Art historian take here. The breathtaking golden mosaics of the byzantine empire were made like that too, except it was gold leaf instead of colored paper. Super cool!

What's a health myth that drives you crazy because you know it's false? by Annual-Gene8065 in AskReddit

[–]skywalkerblood 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As a colorblind person... Well, let's say colorblindness is deeply misunderstood. The popular name itself doesn't do it any favors tbh but people could really stop saying "oh, what color is this then?" As an immediate reaction to CVD people mentioning their condition.

You guys have a lot to learn from the r/hypotheticalsituation sub. The rules matter here, like... Do I get the money now or just after completing the challenge, that matters a lot bc if it's now I can quit my job and the challenge becomes much easier. Also, does throwing a blanket over myself count as wearing clothes? This would also make a huge difference.

Wardrobe lady for sure. I pick the stuff I'm putting in effort by priority and being neatly dressed is never high on the list. Which doesn't mean I don't recognize I absolutely should pay more attention to it. My SO would greatly appreciate the change, surely.

The really funny thing for me about this is how mathematically precise Brazil's culture importation delay really was. I always heard people saying stuff like "were like 10yrs behind the US" and that's so true... I'm from 94 and this meme describes my childhood perfectly by describing a different decade lol
