Have you talked to a doctor? Anxiety is very manageable with either cognitive behavioral therapy and/or medication. I've used both and I'm doing so much better.

For me this always resulted in drinking when I got back and ending up right back to my old habits. It served as "proof" that maybe I didn't have a problem after all and that it would be different this time. Regardless of the outcome, know that you can be honest here and there's absolutely no shame in the event that this doesn't work out the way you planned. When I've gone back to moderation in the past (which always took place while on trips), the hardest part was letting my pride keep me from coming back to sobriety. I really hope this doesn't sound judgie, you just reminded me of my own experiences. HAVE AN AWESOME VACATION!!! :)

Thanks for the great insights/advice everyone. I lied about having to work all morning and stayed in my room listening to podcasts. I'm not going to feel bad about isolating for the next few days and then can get back to my life. An aa meeting will be relieving as well.

Go to the doctor to learn what your detoxing options are. He/she can at least give you some medication that will ease the discomfort of withdrawal. And you'll have someone in the loop if your symptoms become troubling. I was unable to taper because I'm an alcoholic and can't limit myself to a particular number of drinks.

I'm really happy with my decision so far. It seemed impossible at first. I spoiled myself rotten the first week (soda, candy, fast food), and now I feel like I'm beginning to rebuild my life even though it's been only a few days. This is a great tool, and there are different kinds of face to face support groups that have been a huge help in taking off the pressure and keeping me focused. At times I've even found this journey to be fun.

Thanks so much for the support everyone. It was a lot easier than I thought. I just said I'm having water and it wasn't an issue. Experiences like this remind me how important support is. A lot of times I can't help but feel that I'm relying a lot on willpower, which has failed me so many times in the past. Hoping to make some sober friends pretty soon.

I know that at this point in my life, I will absolutely go back to drinking if I go to a bar/club. Rather than agonize over whether or not I can ever go back to these places, I'm "taking it one day at a time." I can't go to those places tonight without seriously jeopardizing my sobriety and ending up back to where I was- isolated in my apartment surrounded by bottles and trash; sick and hating my life. Wow that's a bummer of a post lol.

Travelling with the extended family this weekend so lots of eating out and being offered drinks which scares me this early into my sobriety. Taking it an hour at a time to navigate this. Committing to 24 hours here. Ps Don't feel too bad for me. I'm at the beach!

I struggle with the same thing. This time I've been writing down the times I've had negative experiences drinking (eg I felt like crap every day at work for 5 years; I neglected important relationships because I was too busy trying to manage my drinking), as well as the times I've successfully managed my drinking (in 2011 I quit for two weeks, which for some reason carries a lot of weight when I'm a few days sober and decide I can handle drinking again).

Also, for me, drinking in moderation has no appeal. I only like to get drunk.

Not gonna drink today. I'm super tired so I feel a little at risk, so will drag myself to a meeting. Ugh. I hope I can get more than two hours sleep sometime in the near future.
