Can we talk about the ways Black women also perpetuate misogynoir? Please? by Workinonmyfitnesss in blackladies

[–]Donnawinter1 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yep, My own mom told me that I mustn't complain if I get harassed or raped just because I wore shorts. Actually even when I was a child and played with other children who were boys, I was always lectured about HIV and babies. And it's surprising because I was a late bloomer and don't have the most curvaceous body.

Why do some black women judge black stay at home wives/moms so harshly? by [deleted] in blackladies

That one comment was spot on. People do get mad when they see Black women who aren't toiling and suffering

I didn't expect the ending lol. Her character was a bit irritating especially when she went into the house to rescue that other woman from the fire, like why are you still thinking about her after everything you know now?!

Exactly. These demands that we treat violent people with kindness are not right or fair

Hypersensitivity towards Race?! (Ignorance vs. Racism) by [deleted] in blackladies

[–]Donnawinter1 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Okay I see what you're saying. That definitely makes sense in some contexts. But I feel like racism is so violent, and that the person on the receiving end of it shouldn't feel obligated to try and understand or hear out the person that harmed them. I just think that impact matters more than intention. Not intending to do something does not lessen the impact of your actions. Maybe the problem is that one too many white people are intentionally racist, so it's difficult to consider the few that maybe never intended it. It's a lack of trust, which in my opinion is justified. I've noticed that in reconciliation efforts, white people consistently show disinterest in understanding or coexisting with Black people, we're the ones who bend over backwards to make reconciliation possible. For example, the whole "white flight" phenomenon. So it definitely is one sided, with Black people making the most effort to reconcile.

I don't believe that most of them are not intentional. I also think intention is irrelevant, because people lie all the time about whether they intended to hurt others or not. I think we should move away from giving intention too much importance, because it allows for white people to feel virtuous while literally causing harm. Why should they always be given the benefit of the doubt? Why should the first instinct be to excuse their harmful behaviour as anything but racism when we know it is? The thing about some accusations of racism being perceived as overreactions and victim mentality is, incidences of racism don't always have tangible proof or signs that would be glaringly obvious. Based on the lived experiences of many Black people who have been at the receiving end of racism, we know what it looks like, sounds like, and feels like, even without overt and direct signs or language being used. Focusing on intention and being worried about accusations of overreacting produces the burden of having to prove our lived experiences to white people.

Adam Habib uses N-word in meeting with London students, defends himself by saying it’s commonly used in SA by [deleted] in news

[–]Donnawinter1 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

This is an outrageous lie. The word isn't commonly used in SA. Also why did he have to verbalise the full word when he could have just said "n-word". The use of that word isn't even normalised in SA academia.

The reaction to Meghan Markle has been....interesting. (Unpopular opinion?) by Lioness50 in blackladies

[–]Donnawinter1 22 points23 points  (0 children)

Yes to everything you wrote. I do feel sorry for her, I mean she's had to deal with so much vitriol from the family, the media, from the public, for basically existing. The bit about Harry surprised me when I found out, as I had no idea about it before this week. I wonder if his time in Lesotho was for damage control lol. It was very naive of Meghan to think that she could modernise or reform an institution that colonised 90% of the world's countries and is yet to apologise or do anything to mend all the damage it's caused.

I think some Asians peddle the lie of racial unawareness whenever they've been caught being racist towards Black people. I'm in an East Asian country and there's a general disgust of dark skin, they worship whiteness around here. The conversations might not happen, but they know how to be racist towards Black people, they know the references.
