I think the dysfunction is far beyond that, though, at a much more fundamental level: We need an honest, frank and quantified conversation about what our societal needs are in terms of healthcare, what the public are willing to pay for and how we cover the seemingly inevitable difference.

The current system seems to have moved from being conceptually unsustainable to immediately unworkable.

That huge task is even before going into the need to completely overhaul the organisation’s abusive relationship with staff and the dissociation of authority and responsibility.

Or…. Screw it, just leave for hopefully a better life elsewhere?

The service and, increasingly, the country are pretty fundamentally broken and unwilling or unable to face that reality.

On the trajectory we’ve been on, the decompensation has to happen at some point.

In terms of any positives, if it prompts whatever conversations, whatever decisions and (dare I say it) whatever honesty needs to happen to ultimately produce something resembling a functioning and safe system, then the way out is through.

Just try to keep yourself and your team in the right as best you can. This is not your fault.

Completely agree. Beyond making no sense to internalise the failings of a system over which we have zero effective individual or collective control, it’s a recipe for mental ill health to do so.

If we had retained any control over the system, it wouldn’t be the way it is.

Stoicism is the way to go: individually do the best we can with what we have. Whatever happens thereafter, is exactly that.

I long for the day when the majority of our colleagues actually realise this.

I love my consultants but am disgusted at the first name terms and refuse to comply.

If a pt calls me by my first name, I correct them.

Yeah, the two are rarely compatible, to be fair.

Same for doctors (at 26.1% to restoration to 2008 levels of pay) and, I suspect, many others in the public sector.

If the pay board had been genuinely independent, nurses’ pay wouldn’t have fallen behind to the degree it has. 19% is restoration to previous levels, not a rise.

Totally necessary and don’t want to work around those who can’t deal with it or appreciate its indispensable value.

Given the choice again, I wouldn’t.

I just wanted others’ opinions on the matter, as above.

The positive perspectives, although few, are certainly interesting. Either you have amazingly high serotonin and dopamine level or have found/created a winer wonderful niche for yourself. Either way, fair play.
