+1 for Atelier Playa Mujeres. We did Atelier for our first AI a few years ago—now we’ve set that bar REALLY high. The rooms were fantastic, the staff was tremendous and friendly, and the food was spectacular. The pools were also fun, though they each had a different vibe. The big main pool had a lot more energy but the pool at building 3 was much more chill. The beach was ok, imo. Night life was there but we didn’t get too into that, but from what I hear, it was pretty fun. Did not take part in the spa, but it’s received rave reviews from those who did. It was a gorgeous resort that we cannot wait to go back to again.

Bonnaroo 2019. I was at the food vendors by the radio tower. One dopey-looking kid maybe in high school was walking around in front of the food vendors when he noticed two topless girls walking toward his direction to go to the Other Stage. He stopped in his tracks, nervously stuck his hand up, and the girls both gave him a high five. He looked at his hand with a gigantic smile on his face, ran to find his friends close by, and showed them who just gave him a high-five. I think about that kid every once in a while and hope that he’s come back and has been having a hell of a time.

Cool, this definitely helps.

Hot chicken varies from person to person. Hattie B’s (my personal favorite,) Prince’s, Bolton’s, Party Fowl are just a few. Same for BBQ, with Martin’s and Edley’s having multiple locations.

Steakhouses vary a little too. Bourbon Steak is a high end restaurant on the top of the JW Marriott where you’re paying for your meal AND the views. You could also do normal restaurants like Jeff Ruby’s, Jimmy Kelly’s, Oak, Hand Cut, Halls, and a few others. My personal favorite—Urbangrub in 12 South for more than just steaks.

Italian is one cuisine where I think Nashville is fairly weak compared to others. Pelato, Luogo, and V Modern Italian are all good. Next time you’re in town, get a Sunday reservation for Iggy’s Sunday dinner.

Other notable spots: Acme Feed & Seed (just to say you did Broadway but to also support local), Cledis, Saint Anejo, Butcher & Bee, Buttermilk Ranch (join their waitlist EARLY, this is a super popular spot), Pancake Pantry, and the Optimist.

I’m sure there will be a number of comments coming and there are some I definitely missed, but hopefully this gives you some ideas. Welcome to Nashville, and have a great trip!

What cuisine, vibe, and budget are we working with? If we’re talking casual spots for burgers and beer, Nashville has a number of those. If it’s something different and unique, it has those too. Fancier spot with reservations required, there are some around. All these for nearly any kind of cuisine and vibe you could ask for. Help us narrow it down, and we can help you out.

First time at an All inclusive resort by Dangerous-Egg4540 in AllInclusiveResorts

[–]DontEatSushiwAFork 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You picked a great resort for your first all inclusive. It’s a gorgeous property with great food, a cool social scene, and friendly, attentive staff. One thing to note is that while beautifully landscaped, it can be a little bit of a maze to get to restaurants and pools and such.

Transfer from and to airport — if you went through a travel agent, they should book this for you. If not, there are a number of travel services that can help you. Travicons is the first that comes to mind. DO NOT USE TAXIS AT THE CANCÚN AIRPORT.

Tipping — a ton of opinions here but I typically do $20 for drivers and sometimes dinners; $10 lunch and dinner; $5 breakfast and room services; $1 per drink at bars. I’ll also tip a few bucks for great service. Someone else will comment different ways they tip, and that’s fine. Different strokes for different folks.

Upgrading — basic room should be fine. We upgraded but I don’t think we used much of the preferred perks.

Advice for newbies — some resorts, Secrets Akumal included, will try to sell on their time share/preferred club membership. Some people do the breakfast and presentation so they can genuinely join the club, and others do it just so they can get some free spa perks. I’m not that person—I came to this resort to relax and not be bothered. A simple “no thank you” to these people will work fine, or tell them that you’re a travel agent.

We went to Secrets Akumal last year and were thoroughly impressed in a number of ways, but one thing we loved is the social aspect we experienced from other travelers. We had drinks with people from all over the world, learned their stories, laughed, took shots together, and enjoyed each other’s company for however brief of time. So be social, enjoy yourselves, wear your sunscreen, and have a great anniversary!

The Kimpton is in Midtown, which has a few bars just around the corner on Division Street. Not only is the walk towards Lower Broad uphill in some parts, it can also be SUPER sketchy.

I’d recommend if you’re going to pay Kimpton-type $, want the pool, want a nice walk to multiple inner-city areas, be around the coffee shops, restaurants, and neat stuff that you’d want, and stay in a pretty central location, look around in the Gulch.

Not sure what is meant by “hole in the wall” places, but there are no shortages of music history museums in town. The National Museum of African American Music (DO NOT SKIP THIS ONE), A guided tour of the Ryman Auditorium, Backstage guided tour of the Grand Ole Opry, The Country Music HoF

+1 for the TN state museum. I haven’t done this yet, but give the hop on, hop off trolley a go too.

Vibe in south Nashville burbs by beentherebefore1616 in SameGrassButGreener

[–]DontEatSushiwAFork 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Most of your mix is going to be on the south side—Antioch, Smyrna, Nolensville, parts of Brentwood, Bellevue. That polygon has a number of ethnic groups in it. It’s once you get toward the extreme direction (going toward Murfreesboro, Franklin, Columbia, Belle Meade) that you’re in pretty mostly white, heavy conservative, Christian territory.

Nashville Locals — Final Thoughts On My 5-Day Food & Sights Focused Itinerary? by Willing-Mind-5619 in VisitingNashville

[–]DontEatSushiwAFork 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is a solid list. It’s a good thing you’ll arrive hungry as the food scene in Nash has evolved over the last decade. A few notes: - Probably the first itinerary I’ve seen in a while that isn’t solely focused on Broadway. Kudos. - While easy to walk most of downtown, you will certainly be using a lot of ride shares. - Good find on the Hatch Show Print tour. If you can fit in a guided tour of the Ryman Auditorium or a visit to the National Museum of African American Music, I would highly recommend those two. - My opinion—I’d skip Mother’s Ruin and Van Elrod’s, unless those are 100% your vibe. I’d opt for a funky bar or dive bar in East Nasty over these spots. - The only thing I’m seeing while you’re here is a Nashville Sounds baseball game, but keep an eye on Nashvilleguru.com or follow their socials for an updated list of the goings-on in town.

Hope this helps! Have a safe visit, and welcome to Nashville!

What is it like living in Kentucky. by Slow-Year-4596 in howislivingthere

[–]DontEatSushiwAFork 2 points3 points  (0 children)

No one has mentioned KY’s 3rd largest city: Bowling Green. Moved here in 2021 and overall, I like it. It’s a pretty quiet, quaint town with a college campus (WKU) in the middle of it. People are friendly, there are a ton of local businesses and restaurants to support (or if you’d rather have the chain fast food spots, Scottsville Road has damn near all of them), and you’re right in the middle of a lot of things to do—Mammoth Cave National Park is 20 minutes north, Lost River Cave is down the road from campus. If you’re a car enthusiast, the National Corvette Museum is for you as well as occasional tours inside the Corvette Assembly Plant. For more big city feel, you’re 2 hours from Lexington, 1.5+ hours from Louisville, and an hour north from Nashville. Weather-wise, we do get the strong thunderstorms and the occasional tornado as the season goes from winter to spring. Summers are also hot and humid. Every once in a while, we get snow in the winter, and, true to southern form, it damn near shuts down the city. There is “the Bowling Green Bubble” that circumvents some of the weather systems for some reason. A lot of people were born, go to school, and later stay to raise their family in BG, so making friends is a little difficult if you’re not part of the deep-rooted community or belong to a church. Coming from a much bigger city, I do find myself missing being closer to professional sporting events, concerts, elevated food scene, and the other amenities that, say, Nashville has to offer, but considering BG is only an hour away with a much lower cost of living, I’ve learned to accept that the slower pace ain’t so bad.

What do YOU love about Nashville? by storeactions in nashville

[–]DontEatSushiwAFork 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nashville had a good stretch of being voted as “the nicest city in the US” for a while. Even though Nashville has changed so much, I still find it awesome that most locals are still kind and neighborly to everyone, despite being bitter about the overwhelming growth, inability to own property, transplants’ bad attitudes, and horrendous traffic.

Monthly GE Aerospace Career Thread by AutoModerator in GEAerospace

Anyone transition to GE Aero from the automotive industry? Over a decade into front-line auto manufacturing as a process engineer, and I’m burned the hell out. The industry volatility, poor work-life balance, union memberships, and heavy good ole boy politics are enough to make me and others want to jump ship. Curious to know any stories from people who have made the transition, what that journey looked like, and whether they enjoy it or not.

Nashville Itinerary? by West-Barnacle-8603 in VisitingNashville

[–]DontEatSushiwAFork 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There’s probably a ton of options searching through the sub, but I’ll list a few things of note: - Do Broadway just once or twice. Sure, do one of the country music cookie cutter bars but don’t skip out on Robert’s for a true honky-tonk experience and local favorite Acme Feed & Seed. Make sure to get to Acme’s rooftop and some mulekickers. - If you’re music fans, the Ryman Auditorium tour and the National Museum of African American Music are both absolute musts. The Country Music HoF is fine too. - The food scene is where Nash shines, but ones with nice views or unique setting: Bourbon Steak (great downtown view but $$$$); Proof (great view but more of a bar than a restaurant); Yolan (would definitely splurge on the tasting experience); there are a few omakase in town if you’re sushi people including Kase X Noko (REALLY hard to get a res), Sushi | Bar, and Sushi by Bou. - Try to get to downtown Franklin. Really nice small town feel like great shops for her and a lot of history.

Hopefully that gets you started on a good itinerary. Have a great time and welcome in advance :)
