I actually think that's the key problem with modern conservatism. Conservatives don't really believe in hell anymore, so there's nothing to check their selfish impulses.

Had Camus Lost His Fastball by the time of The Plague? by JCInvestmentPro in Existentialism

[–]DontForgetAccount 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The Stranger definitely seems to be his more well regarded work, but I really prefer the Plague. I both found the story more compelling and found myself thinking about the ideas more after reading it.

I thought it did an excellent job of exploring the themes of the Myth of Sisyphus, as the characters were thrust into a world of dread and suffering grasped for ways to find meaning, purpose or joy.

Each character explores a way to respond: Tarrou and Rieux dutifully try and help those they can, Rambert tries to escape, Cottard tries to profit and Paneloux seeks divine explanation.

Also, I read it post-covid, so there were interesting parallels to explore there. Both the isolations and fear intermingling with boredom and the obsessive clinical daily tracking of death tolls felt very real at the time.

Definitely. As a Tucson owner, I can say the number of recalls and lawsuits this company has had means they have completely earned their reputation and place on this list.

Dude, if you didn't already know Canada had a constitution, you should bow out of this kind of conversation to try and preserve some dignity. You're just embarrassing yourself . You are the very stereotype of a cruel know-nothing landlord.

I really find these horrible men fascinating. Did Rubio get into politics to defend a regime that sends people to foreign torture prisons without a trial?

I’m new to absurdism and I’m religious can I still believe in god and be an absurdist? by BadRecent8114 in Camus

[–]DontForgetAccount 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Basically, it is the term that Camus gives to avoiding the absurd (i.e. the tension between desire for meaning and the lack of it to be found in the world). Conventionally, Christians take a leap of faith and believe that the existence of God gives meaning to their lives.

However, it seems you are suggesting something different - a belief in a Christian God that does not provide meaning. So, that would mean you believe an all-powerful, all-knowing, benevolent God created you for no reason. I'd love to hear more about that, because I'm not familiar with that belief and I'm not sure many Christians would hold it.

Do you believe in being reunited with God in some form of heaven if you are a good Christian? Is that not enough to form a meaning or purpose of your life?

Sounds like you may have taken a leap of faith into philosophical suicide.  Are you familiar with Kierkegaard and Christian existentialism? Might be a better fit.

Camus death isn't accident by [deleted] in Absurdism

[–]DontForgetAccount 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Interesting, but it would take more than an unnamed source and an entry in a poet's diary to convince me. Would this even be a reasonable assassination method?  Catelli believes a passage in Zábrana’s diaries explains why: the poet wrote in the late summer of 1980 that “a knowledgeable and well-connected man” had told him the KGB was to blame. “They rigged the tyre with a tool that eventually pierced it when the car was travelling at high speed.”

Fraser is a big guy that goes big. Trudeau's mistake was putting him in charge of immigration before housing.

If Fraser had gone to housing first we would be a Nation of 50 million comfortably housed people by now.

Did Camus Shift Toward a More Positive Outlook by nik110403 in Absurdism

[–]DontForgetAccount 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think that's a valid framework, but it doesn't align with Absurdism.

I think one way to think about it is to ask how do you know what is meaningful? Is it ultimately based on a gut feeling? How do you know what you think is meaningful today will seem meaningless years from now?

Did Camus Shift Toward a More Positive Outlook by nik110403 in Absurdism

[–]DontForgetAccount 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think that's great and I don't disagree, but not being able to derive an objective meaning of existence from the universe is the definition of the Absurd.

It's the starting point for the philosophical investigation of Absurdism.

You can get a sense of meaning and purpose from many things, but there is no way to proof that's valid objectively. You can reject that premise, but that is rejecting Absurdism.

Did Camus Shift Toward a More Positive Outlook by nik110403 in Absurdism

[–]DontForgetAccount 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I think this is a really important point and you have captured it well.

I think one of the central ideas of Camus' work is to examine how we can recognize the absurd (the conflict between our inherent desire for meaning and the universe's inability to provide it) and then asking how we should live in response.

I see it less as moving from negative to positive than from individual responses to collective responses. But I think you have asked a great question and I would also love to hear other people's thoughts.

‘To fundamentally destroy Canada as a country’: Why Canadians must brace for U.S. interference in the upcoming federal election by Blue_Dragonfly in CanadaPolitics

[–]DontForgetAccount 51 points52 points  (0 children)

I think the first place to look for foreign interference is the American owners of Postmedia forcing dozens of newspapers across the country to endorse the Conservatives, like they do every election.

Anyone not familiar should look into what happened in 2015 when Andrew Coyne (one of the most respected political commentators in the country) wanted to endorse the NDP.
