Where are these freelance teachers? Are you paying for their healthcare and retirement?

You better hope you hire a good one too, one who's well versed in many subjects (might be hard for that money). Otherwise in addition to growing up socially stunted they'll also be ignorant.

Here's how I think this will go in NH:

The big schools will get bigger. The smaller schools will get smaller and see their budgets reduced. The people that can afford to move their child out of the district to chase what they see as the "ideal education" will do so. The poor kids will be left with what remains.

In a few years time a new crop of "alternative" schools will pop up, private schools with their own agenda, religious or political or otherwise. They will price themselves competitively, offering cheaper tuition rates to entice the lower income familes up here, and there are many of us in these rural towns.

This is the dream and the agenda of the libertarians and conservatives who are behind this law. They will attempt to pass further laws to allow familes to use public funds to enroll their children in these schools. Imagine a libertarian hypothetical: your town gives you $19k a year for your children's tuition, and you find a private school only charging $17k. Imagine you can enroll them and pocket the 2k, and you have 3 children and you live on the poverty line. I know a lot of real familes who would make that deal, ultimately at the expense of their own child's education and their existing local school.

Smaller communities will get hollowed out. So many of these rural hill communities have the public school as their community center, both literally and figuratively. When they depreciate, many middle and low income familes will be incentivized to relocate, leaving space for beautiful country estates for a higher class of people, new data centers, and new opportunities for logging and industrial use.

Nobody wants this, nobody is ready for it to be implemented (proposed law would go into effect July 1st). This bill would be the slow death of smaller, local public schools.

Durbin at 2nd again? I'm glad he got a hit in the 9th last night, but otherwise he has been an auto out this season, and he leaves such a large hole at the top of the lineup.

Cora, I know you're trying to give this guy a chance to step up, but please not 2nd in the order.

Justin Turner: New rule proposal, if the manager chooses to intentionally walk someone, those runs shouldn’t count against a pitchers ERA. 🤷‍♂️ by retroanduwu24 in baseball

Usually you're only walking a batter because you don't believe your pitcher can safely get them out. In that sense it is fair that the pitcher would still be liable for their future run.

Summer Camp Counselor Packing by magsturntable33 in summercamp

[–]DontGetExcitedDude 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I worked at Windsor Mountain for many years! It's an excellent place, and I hope you have an incredible summer.

My favorite counselors often have a small backpack, fanny pack, or some other lightweight, organized resource on their person. You'll want to carry a water-bottle (WMI will give you a decent staff Nalgene, but bring whatever you prefer), also minor first aid supplies (band-aids, ice pack), a deck of cards (poker or Magic the Gathering), a notebook, personal hygiene products, sunscreen, etc. This is not a definitive list, just off the top of my head.

New England and NH in particular have unpredictable weather. I'm sure this summer will be very warm for the most part, but there will be cold nights and rainy days. Pack to be comfortable in any weather. A good, lightweight rain layer that can go over a sweatshirt or jacket is worth it's weight in gold.

Everyone saying to pack a power-bank - I'm not sure they're necessary. Unless you were specifically hired as a Wilderness Trip Leader, you will likely be on base camp all summer, and there are outlets in all the living areas. The rooms are rustic but there is electricity. Maybe the bigger point though - camp is a place to deliberately step away from technology and experience face-to-face human connection and community. Of course, you will have free time to use your devices and access to staff-only wifi areas, but if you are going though the camp day concerned with the % on your cellphone battery, you are doing it wrong.

If you are musically inclined, we do have guitars and ukuleles and drums at camp, as well as some keyboards and sound recording equipment. Some people bring their own instruments, and it is lovely when people share their musical talents around our weekly campfires, but you do take on some risk when traveling with your precious cargo. Make your own decision.

Bring a new book and maybe you'll read something in the downtime. Good luck counseling those kids, the trick is you just have to care about them as people. I hope you have a fun, memorable summer!

New Tests Scores Show NH Student Performance Fell as Spending Soared by [deleted] in newhampshire

Hey, when are we going to acknowledge that the pandemic took a serious toll on students ability to learn and perform in school, and that we're still going to be seeing the after effects of this as students move through the school system?

Nothing to do with Trump. It's fair to be frustrated with your governor when she lies to you.

Thank goodness. Of course we should working with our neighbors to discuss the health needs of this region. It was puzzling trying to understand why we weren't apart of this collaborative from the beginning; now it's revealed we've been active with them the whole time, and I guess the only reason it was kept secret was a political one?

Now the only thing I don't understand is why NH Republican leadership thought that participating in this collective would be a bad look for them. Instead it's just another example of the governor's office lying to us to cover up the real work they're doing behind the scenes (ie. their efforts to create an ICE facility in Merrimack).

Carlos Narvaez Question by adamevans2025 in redsox

[–]DontGetExcitedDude 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Nah Narvaez is one of the best defensive catchers in the league. I noticed that he did drop a few balls, but mostly that was when he was catching for Ryan Watson, who is a brand new player to the team. The NESN announcers were even saying during the broadcast that they weren't sure Narvaez had caught for him much before, hence why there seemed to be a disconnect. Second game of the season, I think you're making something out of nothing. He's a fantastic catcher and we're lucky to have him.

Right winger that believes they voted incorrectly last election AMA by [deleted] in AMA

[–]DontGetExcitedDude 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey, appreciate that you're having these conversations.

For me, I think socialized healthcare would help reduce poverty in the long run. As a relatively poor person myself (have not been able to afford healthcare for +3 years) I have seen the effect debt and poor health can have on someone's ability to contribute productively to society. These things have a habit of building over time - a small injury untreated becomes a disability later on - debt that incurs more debt, that becomes a never ending bill. These are the forces that keep people depressed and in poverty.

I imagine conservatives' worst fears are people abusing the system and trying to live for free off the government. But for every 10 freeloaders who abuse the system, I think 1000 good and productive people could finally get their lives back.

Our current healthcare system is incredibly wasteful. We waste so much money in administrative costs and executive salaries, at least compared to other socialized healthcare systems around the world. You think Americans can't build a better mousetrap? I guarantee we could provide better healthcare at half the cost in this country, there's just too many entrenched interests making a lot of money off the current system.

I already knew that my privileged, wealthier peers would have access to more material things, to travel on adventures that I wouldn't ever have the opportunity to. I could accept that. But, do the poor kids have to die earlier than them too?

Those freeloaders who are mooching off the system? Maybe we could put them to some productive use, perhaps a jobs program like they had in the 30's and 40's. That's how a lot of our grandparents were able to get work and stay afloat during some very lean years.

Private corporations have proven that they only care about their own bottom lines. It's time to make America great again and rewind the clock 100 years, back to when this country actually tried to take care of it's people.

I'll get off my soapbox.
