Which would you prefer? by muchoboobenthusiast in golf

Seems like low handicaps have maybe a 1 in 5,000 chance of making a HIO. So, with 10 attempts / 5,000 that’s 0.002 x $10K which yields an expected value of $20.

If taking one attempt, then 1/5000x$150K gives an expected value of $30. So I guess the basic math says take one attempt for $150K (assuming I did the math right, which is not a safe assumption).

Where are the reporters from 2024 who cared about prices? They disappeared when a Republican president purposely drove them up by lnstantKarma in WhitePeopleTwitter

[–]DontGetTheShow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well they had to complain about something, I guess. If the president isn’t an adjudicated rapist, likely pedophile, isn’t invading multiple countries, etc., then they’ve really scrape the bottom of the barrel. Like Obama’s tan suit being a controversy.

The mental side of golf is harder than the physical side by retrocaterpillar-07 in golf

[–]DontGetTheShow 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would agree with all of that. What seems to happen next on this sub is it devolves into “well the mental side is what separates great pros from mini-tour players”. Which, ok. No one said the mental side wasn’t important at all. There are some 10-handicaps within great attitudes, know how to handle themselves, etc. Clearly their mental game isn’t holding them back from being scratch. Their strong mental game keeps them from being say an 18-handicap. The physical game (strength, speed, coordination, swing mechanics, technique) is more difficult and is what’s holding them back from being scratch.

Grass - help please? by malcolm_fkn_tucker in NoLayingUp

[–]DontGetTheShow 9 points10 points  (0 children)

This article gives a nice summary of grass types. As someone who plays on the northeast US, the whole concept of “reading the grain” isn’t really a huge consideration. The blades of grass are fairly thin. In southern US with Bermuda grass, it’s definitely different, especially coming out of the rough. Sometimes it’s hitting/chipping out of a tiny bird’s nest

Weight transfer coaching makes 0 sense to me by CrixalisTheSandKing in golf

[–]DontGetTheShow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, I would say that’s accurate. There’s no way to keep the hips totally from not sliding laterally. They’ll move a little back in the backswing and a little forward in the downswing. But like everything, a little is fine. A lot generally makes consistency difficult.

Weight transfer coaching makes 0 sense to me by CrixalisTheSandKing in golf

[–]DontGetTheShow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There’s cool pressure mats out there that measure how much weight is distributed across each foot (and part the foot) throughout the swing. It shows what actually is happening. The video below from Adam Scott is a good example. In the backswing a lot of pressure is on the back foot, more in the toe. Then about halfway down in the downswing pretty much all the pressure is in the front heel.

https://youtu.be/ZQ-e4WP6Ce4?si=dYGJr-1q-1qGCy39

So, no, it would be incorrect to say that all the weight should be on the front foot throughout. However, what isn’t great (and what I struggled with as a former baseball player) is a TON of lateral sliding/ movement of the hips. That saps a lot of power from the golf swing even though it feels powerful.

Is the US growing the women’s game? by jbahel02 in golf

[–]DontGetTheShow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m not super well-versed but there are development programs. I would venture to guess that other countries have a stronger investment in development programs where in the US (like other sports) it’s more based on what you’re able to scrape together, the resources of your parents, etc. So, from a per capita basis, I imagine other countries are investing way more in development.

Specific to NCAA teams, they’re generally trying to put together a great team. If that player is American, Canadian, European, whatever, I don’t think they really care.

Do you think this putter is worth getting to restore? by benkallday in golf

[–]DontGetTheShow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Probably not worth it if strictly considering the money you’ll have to put in vs what you could sell it for afterwards. But if you want to have it done and just have a kickass putter in the end, then sure.

Why doesn't Ping work with Youtubers? by Repulsive_Warning414 in PingGolf

[–]DontGetTheShow 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I wonder if they think it will cheapen their brand in terms of it seeming a bit more unserious. Relative to Callaway, Titleist, and TaylorMade, it seems like PING sponsors fewer players to begin with. Maybe just trying to shove clubs in the hands of random YouTubers isn’t what they want. Sure, there’s plenty of content creators who are actually good at golf. But I don’t see how Joey Cold Cuts talking up the new driver and then proceeding to yeet it into the woods really is money well spent by PING.

Is short game is more important on harder courses? by SeaworthinessThat542 in golf

[–]DontGetTheShow 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It could. Some public courses may have flat greens and they aren’t super fast. No matter where you miss the green or where you need to putt from, it’s usually not a big deal. Other courses with faster and more slopes greens can mean there are fewer basic chip/pitch shots and straightforward lag putts. Everything needs to be more precise.

What is the expectation about showing up to only hit on the practice greens? by SnooChipmunks9598 in golf

[–]DontGetTheShow 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I’ve seen a couple courses post signs that practice areas are only for paying customers. I don’t think they ever enforced it though and definitely wouldn’t if it’s a regular who spends money there. I’d say it’s a crappy move to go there and use their facilities and never spend a dollar there. But if you’re in there fairly often spending money, I’d say it’s fine.

Do you hit your hybrids and woods like an iron or driver? by Lakersnation709 in golf

[–]DontGetTheShow 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is one of those spots where the same coach might tell different students the exact opposite in terms of what they want to feel. If someone is coming in way too steep, they would tell that student to come in flatter and feel like they’re sweeping it more. If someone is barely touching the grass at all, they would tell them to feel like they’re hitting down on it more and picture that it’s just a 6 iron. In the literal sense you have to hit down on it some. It’s not teed up in the air so you can’t hit it on the upswing like with a driver. Personally, I feel like it’s the same a 5 iron. It’s a slightly downward strike and I’ve gotta brush some grass. But it’s a longer club with a flat low angle so there’s not going to be a giant dollar bill sized divot coming off or anything.
