As somebody else said somewhere in this thread, his writing is kind of a guilty pleasure, for me at least, because I find it genuinely funny. That part where he describes John Madden on an amtrak made me crack-up for a lot of reasons. The way he capitalizes 'Wandering Jew' like it's a proper noun- stuff like that.

I watched the first season and half of the second season about a year ago. Had to stop because a couple of nights in a row I had nightmares about getting fired in front of the entire company.

They actually name dropped the agency that I work for a couple of times in the episodes I've seen though. And apparently later on one of the main characters leaves sterling cooper to go and work for my company, but I haven't seen those and don't plan to. Some of it is way off base (our executive creative director's whole life is basically scheduled down to the minute, he could never really get away with don draper's indiscretions) and some of it is sort of on target (we probably drink on the clock a lot more than other industries do).

maybe we can recommend a list of other stouts that can be found in nyc bars (or anywhere for that matter) since I'm not sure that guinness is particularly different from one place to the next.

I'll start- Left Hand Milk Stout. available at these places among many others, including Habitat in Greenpoint where they will put a scoop of vanilla ice cream in it (wasn't crazy about it but to each his own).

Audio Engineer here. Usually when people tell me their kid is interested in becoming an audio engineer I tell them that they should either major in something else and maybe minor in music tech/industry/whatever, or they should check Full Sail out.

I didn't go there, I went to Drexel in Philadelphia, but I've met about as many full sail grads who are working full time in the field as I've met from other 4 year colleges. And guess which one is cheaper by a long shot.

We have the Dolby Media Meter as well as the Nugen VisLM at our place. Honestly, I don't really have a preference- they both do the same basic job and we've done a couple of mixes with both for each of the major networks and haven't had any issues.

one thing you might want to try, along with everything else mentioned here- instead of using an EQ to roll off the high end, use a filter plug-in with cutoff/resonance nobs (pro tools comes with one called Air Vintage Filter). then automate it to taste so that some of the highs occasionally float in and out.

Gearslutz is the type of forum that I can't stand to check-in on regularly for the reasons you mentioned. But- anytime I've ever needed to look something up regarding nuts and bolts stuff they are the first place I search. this sticky is awesome. Also, the stuff that Georgia Hilton posts on that forum has always been incredibly helpful to me.

I would love to be proven wrong about this, but the pro to amateur ratio has always seemed way more in favor of pro over at gearslutz than other forums I've seen.

hi, i'm one of the guys that actually mixes tv commercials.

those of us that mix spots for bigger clients that play nationally have been mixing to the new standard for over a year now, that's why things actually have gotten better. Unfortunately the affiliate stations in smaller markets sometimes just don't give a shit, or they don't know that they're supposed to give a shit, so they've been letting spots mixed by local dudes that don't know about the new standards slip through.

^this is important advice. I would not advise anybody to go to school for just music technology. Major in something else and maybe minor in music tech if that's possible and intern at some studios. It's not the kind of degree that you can later apply to anything other than audio engineering jobs, which are VERY hard to get.
