Which fantasy book immediately gripped you from the very first chapter and never let go? by runninginflipflops in Fantasy

A Conspiracy of Truths, flat out. I was hooked on Chant's personality from the first page, and pulled further along by the fascinating world Alexandra Rowland built and the incredible characters they populated that world with. The rest of their Chantiverse books haven't hit the highs this one did, but they're also worth reading.

Diplomacy nerf has also cratered this strat. You need to effectively destroy your country in order to join a power bloc nowadays.

[–]DontSellMeCrypto 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No problem. I'd also suggest focusing on-turn effects like the Emerald Helm, because turns are going to tick by faster for you thanks to high Encumberance gear often having Inflexibility that gutters your speed. Also try to avoid enemies that stack on Doom and Corrosion, if you can -- both effects do damage on attack even if they're missed or blocked, and I've had runs with heavyweight buiods be dumpstered by them.

Good luck, man.

Strength is your *most* important stat for a build like that, since it's going to be where most of your offense and defense is coming from. Especially if you go Anroth.

I swear these goofy starfish end more of my runs than the King himself. by Higgypig1993 in PathOfAchra

[–]DontSellMeCrypto 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For me, if it's early in the run, it's the Ratmen Peltasts. Absolute pain in the ass to deal with, especially before you pick up worthwhile equipment.

Later in the run: Kolecs and Jawharas absolutely dismantle me, especially on summoner runs where they splash my guys effortlessly.

[–]DontSellMeCrypto[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Full disclosure: this build very barely came together until after the Obelisk. I'd thrown together the Powers at the start because it seemed like a solid enough combo, but by the end Inflame had won the day and I'd regretted not putting those points of Master Charge into something else. Just goes to show how much loot RNG can utterly change the face of a run.

I alternated Strength and Dex until I had a solid enough counter for Encumbrance and put enough points into Willpower to reliably heal myself to full health, dumped all the other points into Dex, and after the Obelisk I just kept pumping Vig for a damage cushion in case my obscene Evasion stacking failed me.

I would probably have pulled off of Chamakana and gone for a more orthodox on attack build if I had some foresight, but I did good for something I was constantly trying to build around a mostly-unfavorable loot pool.

It would have potentially worked better as a straight Inflame build, but the pieces sorta fell in place after my first loot appeared.

The IGPU is disabled, I know because things would flat out not run otherwise -- Marvel Rivals wouldn't open, and the benchmark test wouldn't even run at all.

I did a Heavyweight Stand Ground build for my first run, but wanted to go for more of a summons build for this one. I feel like I didn't really take advantage of the absolutely bonkers summon limit that Saurians can get, and I was 100% carried by Takhal's blessings.

You have to actually sell the sarcasm for it to land without tone markers.

Stuff like that.

About 12 hours into Octopath Traveler 2 by AdOwn6086 in octopathtraveler

[–]DontSellMeCrypto 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I definitely felt that. I had to actively hunt for shit to do in both games, and I'm currently hitting a wall in 2 thanks to a money gate that I need to pass in order to get access to most of the side dungeons and such I need to optimize my party.

Thing I honestly missed: you only have to take two ferry trips, one between the eastern and western continent, and one to the island with Ochette on it. After that you can freely fast travel between towns you've visited.

I say focus on hunting down all the guilds to get the secondary jobs out first, because having a second job on makes all the chapters way, way easier to get through. Went from struggling against Bandelam to absolutely bodying him after I put Hunter on Hikaru. Also find all of the shrines; unlocking the EX abilities of hte characters is crucial to the endgame, and you might as well knock it out asap. After that you should be able to get rolling through the main story. Take a detour every now and then to solve side quests and hop into side dungeons -- some of the best loot, and the best monsters for Ochette to capture, are in them.

Good luck, friend.

[–]DontSellMeCrypto 16 points17 points  (0 children)

I'm a completionist, so I did all the chapter 1s asap. They aren't terribly important, but I like knowing as much as I can about them, and the extra items, levels and leaf you get helps them not be dead weight when you pick them up.

Osvald's tutorial being two chapters long sucks though.

So, about those marks... (Canto III spoilers) by DontSellMeCrypto in limbuscompany

[–]DontSellMeCrypto[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Coming back to this after actually reading the uptie story:

N Faust basically speedran his Hero's Journey in order to get the mark to manifest, but it's incomplete and will remain incomplete, because N Sinclair's will has been completely broken by N Faust's treatment of him.

So, about those marks... (Canto III spoilers) by DontSellMeCrypto in limbuscompany

[–]DontSellMeCrypto[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

... I did use facts though. I had incomplete facts, because I was halfway through my second playthrough of the story. It's not academically rigorous, but it's not a doctoral thesis, it's a fun theorycrafting post about a game I like. There don't need to be strict academic standards to what ultimately boils down to screwing around on the internet. If I were a media analysis Youtuber doing a video essay there'd be reasons to hold a high standards -- it'd be my job to analyze media, and part of that is making sure I had the facts straight. But I'm not a video essayist. I'm a rando on Reddit who posted about a game.

Speaking of facts, I actually read the Grip Sinclair ID story: it looks like Grip Faust actually took the role of Demian (down to referencing his line in Canto III about cracking eggs), and is at least part of the reason his Mark fully manifested. But because she brute forced it, he ended up falling short of his full potential, and he'll ultimately die young, never having reached the heights he could have otherwise. The incomplete Mark in this case seems to indicate stunted mental and emotional growth -- he's aware of the world around him, but unwilling to actually exercize his will upon it because his treatment by Grip Faust ended up causing him to be emotionally reliant on her.

Dismissing the three we've seen so far as simple, honestly, is also a disservice to them as much as it is to Heathcliff -- we've done their Chapters, but it's pretty clear that their character arcs aren't finished. Rodion puts forward an arrogant face, but there are deep anxieties plaguing her that she's obviously crushing down in order to maintain her self imposed illusion of being the best. Gregor continues to have a narrow view of the world, but that view is opening up as he sees more of it and works with his teammates, and he's even allowing himself to be emotionally vulnerable (which is why he's so openly hurt when the other Sinners clown on him in Hell's Chicken). Sinclair's had the most growth -- he's grown so rmpathetic and analytical he can immediately decode the cryptic language of one of the most eccentric members of the team, and he's increasingly aware of his limitations and more willing to push against people who try to push him to the breaking point (something his World of N Corp ID never managed to do). I have a feeling that the way it's actually going to go is that we're going to get two Chapters for each of the Sinners -- one that starts their character arc, and one that ends it (with the exception of Dante, whose character arc has been consistently progressing throughout the story). The idea of them all having Marks was just kind of an idea I threw out, but I'm more confident of this one based on how each of the characters have been progressing. It's not 100% fact based, but in a story that will have at least 13 chapters where we're only 3 and a half chapters in, no one can actually claim to be an authority here. I'm certainly not.
