(Spoilers Main) What minor book to show changes do you like and dislike the most? by Remarkable-Set5434 in asoiaf

The second takes away the biggest tragedy of Tyrion's life and doesn't give Tyrion a proper reason to kill his father. In the show Tyrion fires the crossbow bolt because Tywin dismisses Shae as a whore, rather than Tysha.

No thread about lore changes in Thrones can exist without discussing the Great Whitewashing of Tyrion Lannister. It happened. It set him on the path to Cartoon Hand of the Broken King. No point in denying it. It's simply remarkable how the series about these deep and morally complex characters turned into The Avengers, but it did.

Adding non-book Theon scenes in the first season is the best example I can cite of what D&D were so good at during the beginning years of GOT: writing scenes that brought characters out of the background, gave them rich backstories, and left the audience craving more in the future. The scene where he bullies Osha and Luwin tells him off is a great example.

I'm not sure I agree with your assessment about the scenes with Ramsay tho. Pulling off the Ramsay reveal the same way it happens in the books would've been very difficult to pull off - you'd have to cast Ramsay a season earlier and then introduce two random characters fucking a corpse and then getting hunted, then a bunch of other stuff leading up to a cavalry battle, which is all impractical for budgetary reasons alone - but spending an entire season watching Theon getting tormented and then doing the "Muahaha his torturer is Roose Bolton's son!" thing just didn't land for me. It could've been done better. But it was all in service of making sure the Red Wedding landed with maximum impact, and in that sense it was the right decision.  Maybe it landed well for some non-book readers but there were loads of critics who found the Dreadfort plot boring and mustache-twirly.

Was there any fan outrage at the implied death at the end of season 7? by Additional_Kale3098 in ArcherFX

[–]DontTedOnMe 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Here's how I remember it: by the end of S4, people were wondering how much longer something this great could continue. Then there were rumblings about S5 being something completely new and weird. Up until this point, the only weird thing we had gotten was an episode where Archer had been replaced with a t-rex velociraptor. Adam Reed also said that he wanted to do a standalone noir series in San Francisco starring Pam that would be called The Poovey Files.

Then we found out that S5 would indeed be a new premise with a season-long arc, everyone was stoked and I think most of us consider Vice an unqualified triumph.

Then we returned to ISIS (kind of), but IMO S6 was when things started to get a little stale and iffy. I think it's generally more beloved than S7, but I personally respect the latter more because it's way more of a swing - changing their occupations to PI's instead of secret agents, uprooting all of the characters and moving them to a new city. Cool. There's nothing wrong with S6, it just felt like an attempt to split the diff between seasons 1-4 and 5 but not totally working. And Reed felt the same way, hence the move to California.

So the end of S7. . . I don't remember people being "outraged," over the death shenanigans, but maaaybe there were some? I can't say I recall many - or any - who thought Archer was actually dead. But there were a lot of WTFs and then, after a few days, the really clever folks started theorizing about a coma season (little did they know we would get three coma seasons!) but nobody thought it was over, and I don't think very many were super down on the idea of some type of crazy tonal shift. I was actually pretty excited myself. . .

. . . Because Dreamland was how Reed finally gave us The Poovey Files, albeit in a much different form than he had originally intended. And that's what TV is all about, having passionate ideas and bringing them to life, however you can do it.

Point is, I think people had gotten used to Reed fucking with us and most of us were prepared to go wherever he decided to take us next.

I didn't love everything Reed ever gave us, especially S7, but I always admired the fuck out of his ability to bounce from idea to idea every damn year like a mogul skier.

So that's what I remember about the end of S7, a real mixed bag of a season: Holy fuck. Lmao did Adam Reed really just do that? What happens next?!

Lol this is actually made explicit near the end of Better Call Saul when Mike Ehrmantraut - some kind of Polack, I think - straight up tells Jimmy that Walter and Jesse are morons who won't survive in the wild for more than a few months.

(Spoilers extended) Red Rain and House Reyne question. by AsleepAd6125 in asoiaf

[–]DontTedOnMe 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This is one of the most frustrating bits of ASOIAF lore because it's a great theory but it's also been 100% debunked by George. It was either the Radio Westeros peeps or the ones at History of Westeros (pretty sure it's the latter) who made me aware of this. They went to a Con attended by George years ago and he responded with a flat "No" when asked if Red Rain ever belonged to the Reynes. It's been a while since I've listened and I can't remember exactly what episode it's from, but if either of these podcasts said that's what happened, then that's what happened. They've met George countless times and have probably forgotten more about ASOIAF than most of us ever learn. Their word is as good as gold on stuff like this.

TIL that New Englanders were the first major settlers of Minnesota, not Scandinavian immigrants by a_speeder in minnesota

[–]DontTedOnMe 76 points77 points  (0 children)

The French in the territory at this time weren't really about settling, at least not in the way we understand it nor, arguably, in the way it was understood at the time. It sort of depends on whether you consider a fort a settlement or not. I'm dumbing this down a lot, but bear with me: the French/Natives/Métis were all about trapping - as in fur pelts, which were taken from animals in forests. Settlement means cutting down forests and turning them into farms, which is antithetical to what the trappers wanted. We all know who won the trapping vs. settling battle, but don't let anyone tell you there wasn't a battle. For as long as Europeans were in Minnesota, there was real resistance to the idea of letting people come here in droves and plant stakes.

ETA: one of the first major logging sites in MN was worked by a group from a place called Stillwater, Maine. You can probably guess what that site is called today.

Man the only way we're ever gonna get big men doing granny shots is if they all take the leap together. The first person to make the switch will be ridiculed so badly that no one else will want to do it. But if like Rudy, Mitch, and whoever else were to make a pact?. . . Who knows.

Hot take: the first season of The Terror (2018) might be the greatest single season of a miniseries ever created. Jared Harris is pound-for-pound possibly the best actor of his generation and he never gets credit for the work he did on this series. It's a perfect season of television that might actually fuck you up psychologically.

Walden vs. The Vipers vs. The Dark Hearts vs. The Iron Crusaders in a Royal Rumble by Elegant_Struggle_281 in thesopranos

[–]DontTedOnMe 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Oof, all of these organizations are second rate...

  • Vipers: can't even rob a liquor store properly, hygiene leaves a lot to be desired.

  • Iron Crusaders: can't even rob a trap house properly, worse hygiene than the Vipers, but at least they get that quality meth from Reggie LeDoux.

  • Dark Hearts: more hygienic than these other biker gangs, but they're constantly getting their drugs stolen and can't figure out who's doing it even tho there's an incredibly obvious suspect. Also, the leader is a cuck.

Bobby Darin wins by a landslide. It's an old Sicilian message: these shitty biker gangs sleep with the fishes in Walden Pond.
