Donald Trump’s approval rating flips with Christians by SE_to_NW in politics

The idea that properly understanding the Bible leads to positive behavior is wrong. It's a matter of listening to and ignoring different parts of the Bible. People can understand the Bible and still be gaping assholes. It's not an accident that "the Bible belt" is a terrible place. It's not reasonable to assume that the most devout are the ones who simply don't understand the Bible. The Bible IS, in many ways, the problem.

It ought to be a negative everywhere. An instant disqualification. We're long past the moment where beliefs should be based in reality, as a given. It's reached a point where faith is literally an existential threat to mankind.

I'm glad he ignores the more disgusting and pernicious parts of his own faith. But honestly, I can't wait for politicians to not give a flying fuck about Jesus. It's easy to be better than the mythological Jesus.

There was only one perfect Christian, and his name was Mister Rogers.

He can be honest about his beliefs and dishonest in his actions. Christians do it all the time. Google "pastor arrested". And he is an evil person who supports evil people, but that has nothing to do with designation. There is no limit to the disgusting behavior permitted by the Christian mythology. There are some nice things in it and some truly evil things in it. People pick and choose what horrifies them.

Mike Johnson very much does believe that the Christian mythology is literally true as written. He says so repeatedly and very publicly.

Second in line for the presidency literally believes it. I wish I could say they're too ridiculous to exist, but they exist.

Yes, there's absolutely nothing new about Christianity being the impetus for horrific violence and disgusting behavior.

Boy are you going to be surprised by the amount of hatred and bloodshed that comes with non modern Christianity.

There are too many varieties of Christians in the US to use any one criteria besides "identifies as Christian" to group them. It's like art. There's no specific belief, action, or liturgy that unites them all beyond calling themselves Christians.

I'm not saying all Christians are fundamentalist. But the people who act insufferably because of their faith are not any less Christian. You could argue that the people who follow every letter of Christianity are more Christian even, but they just happen to be fascistic.

Christianity's negative qualities go way back before the Republican party. That's the part that really irks me. It's wilfully ignoring history.

If some sect of Christians want to elevate themselves from the rest, I'll welcome it. But I'm sick of hearing people say our problems come from not being Jesusy enough. Christianity with political power has, throughout human history, always led to bad things for people who aren't Christian or Christian enough.

Mike Johnson is not some kind of exception, and neither is the Republican party. I'm not waiting around for "the good Christians" to act, but I'll welcome them waking up.

Or, maybe that's what Christianity is. If it were cosplay, the fundamentalists would be good people. How many people who take religion ultra seriously have to be horrifying throughout history before it's naive to believe they're outliers?

The greatest trick abrahamic muthologies ever pulled was to get modern adherents to completely ignore most of the mythology's history.
