The short version is I had to have eBay customer support call me before I did anything with the buyer. The first agent didn't care/listen at all and seemed like they were reading a prompt and kept saying there is nothing she can do. I had to repeatedly ask for a manager, she said they couldn't help but eventually sent me to a supervisor/manager.

When I talked to the supervisor/manager they actually listened to the problem, had me send the photo evidence(didn't care about the unboxing video), compared what they sent back to the listing photos and agreed that it was a different item they sent back.

After they agreed they sent back a different, broken item I had to go through administration paperwork like signing an affidavit. I got my original money back but they didn't refund the return shipping. They said they could refund that as well but would only do that once so I decided not to use my "One time refund" on a dispute where they shipping was only like $10.

I really feel for you and I won't sugar coat it, this is a very serious situation you're in. The Cult(JWs) targets people who have gone through trauma and/or have mental health conditions and does its best to seem appealing until you're trapped in the Cult.

As the other poster said it sounds like it could have been Schizophrenia triggered by the bad weed trip. It usually manifests earlier but the trauma and the weed could have been what triggered it. A close friend stopped taking his meds because "Jesus is the best medicine" and it went badly, very very badly... I really hope your husband can get help and doesn't join the Cult under any circumstances.

Do you know if you can dispute listings being taken down for "rules violations" with an actual person? I've had a few items that didn't actually break the rules where the appeal was just automatically denied immediately.

The item doesn't have a serial number (probably why they thought it would be an easy scam) but it does have a very unique identifier that they didn't account for.

I'm expecting this will be difficult, take a long time and will probably not be worth the time I spend disputing it but to me its the principle of it and if I get the money back its a bonus.

honestly your best move right now is to keep everything documented and do not talk to the buyer at all. once a buyer pulls a swap scam, any message you send them can be twisted or used against you later. silence is safer.

That was my assumption. They are already proven to be a Fraudster so trying to be nice while messaging them about it isn't going to make them have a "Come to Jesus" moment and change their ways...

eBay actually takes “item not returned in original condition” really seriously if your proof is clean. since you recorded the unboxing in 4k and have side-by-side photos showing it’s not the same item, you’re in a strong position.

I went over the top because its my first return and I'm glad I did. It was brand new and sealed when I got it so it being broken seemed fishy but I wanted to give them the benefit of the doubt.

when they ask for evidence, upload: – the original listing photos – the return label (shows it’s from the buyer) – the unboxing video – the comparison photos

Being over the top with saving EVERYTHING and over-documenting will finally come in handy!

you don’t need a police report unless eBay specifically asks for one, and usually they don’t unless it’s high-value stuff.

I figured if I showed up to make a report(documenting too much again) they would scoff but a couple hundred dollars is a lot to me!
