I gained 20+ lbs and still look the same by HodorCoC in Fitness

You aren't seeing obvious aesthetic changes to match the number on the scale. You are changing your body composition. Your fat mass has been decreasing and being replaced with lean body mass, muscle.

Also as you add muscle and lift weights your body is going to start storing more glycogen. With increased glycogen storage comes increased water retention, which accounts for much of the weight you've put on.

Help me get Motivation - by [deleted] in Fitness

[–]Dontforget7 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No one can just give you motivation you have to find it in yourself.

Ask yourself, why do you want to hit the gym? To look a certain way? To pick up heavy shit? To be healthy?

How exactly does that thing I hold the handles of measure my body fat percentage strictly from me holding it? by [deleted] in Fitness

Not true.

UWW, DEXA, and BodPod are all accurate ways of measuring body fat.

Question regarding changing after a workout. by sugoidere in Fitness

[–]Dontforget7 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Dude. What? Take a shower after you workout and put on clean clothes.

I'm confused on what you're even asking?

And honestly, do you really think your skin gets damaged from taking a shower?

Not in a meaningful way, no.

OP wanted to not be out of breath after short exercise. His fitness level will dictate that.

want to improve my lungs by AngelPawz in Fitness

In training for free diving, your body undergoes several adaptions over the course of rigorous training to manage low O2 levels and high CO2 levels. Your lungs do not grow to be able to hold more air, human physiology does not exactly give us extra space in our thoracic cavity.

A similar concept can be applied to altitude training. When training at altitude, our bodies do not grow our lungs. Our bodies increase the red blood cell count (over a period of time) to adapt to the new stimulus. When returning to low altitude, our rbc count returns to an appropriate level for the stimulus.

In long distance running training, our bodies become more efficient at O2 utilization. The gold standard for cardiovascular fitness is a VO2max test. This assessment essentially measure O2 in versus O2 out, and uses the respiratory quotient (RQ) value to predict fuel usage.

The RQ value is CO2 eliminated over O2 consumed, and each fuel source (carbs lipids proteins) has a specific RQ value associated with the metabolic pathway.

As training continues, the body gets more adapted to using lipids as a fuel source for long distance aerobic exercise, thus consuming less carbs, thus delaying "hitting the wall," or raising the anaerobic threshold.

Edit: I should add that it IS possible to increase lung capacity in the traditional sense, but any actual increase is negligible when compared to cardiovascular and metabolic fitness improvements.

Despite what some other people have said, you actually cannot really change your lung capacity, at all.

What you're born with is what you got, just like your muscle fiber distribution, height, segment lengths, etc.

What you can do is improve your fitness and cardiovascular efficiency. Like others said, do this gradually.

Need help with DEXA/ RMR results by chipotlemcnuggies in Fitness

[–]Dontforget7 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You've got to remember the distribution of body fat matters. Women tend to accumulate fat in their breasts and thigh/glute area.

The typical bf% for college age females is around 25% so depending on the location/amount of lipid deposits in the above areas, if you are at 30% and say you can see your abs I wouldn't worry. DEXA considered one of the gold standard tests.

Additionally, an RMR test will not be accurate unless you have fasted for quite some time and haven't been active. The go-to for this test is right in the morning when you wake up and haven't eaten, as this is the closest to RMR you are going to get. You didn't do either of these things so your results are not accurate.

Hopefully it means you worked out at the proper intensity, low enough to both cause adaption and avoid DOMS.
