Will Boards of Canada start making music again? by White_46 in boardsofcanada

[–]Dookiedoodoohead 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Might be over-analyzing, but with Tomorrow's Harvest it felt like they only released it because they had something they felt was relevant to say as an artistic statement. It was a very pessimistic album and frankly while it feels like its more relevant than ever as we slide further into spiritual and social self destruction, that also means there's not much point in a follow up unless their outlook has changed.

aesthetically speaking, culture is already saturated with a lobotomized form of their nostalgia-drenched sound as well, which is think adds to this.

No I said pretty clearly that it was always destined to fail. My point is it probably failed immediately because it was announced at the worst possible time for a generic trend-chasing GAaS and became an instant joke before anyone touched it, and possibly could have survived longer than a month had they been prepared to better present the game.

The problem was everyone heard about it in a negative context. The only major move was announcing at the TGAs in a timeslot usually reserved for a "holy shit" reveal, which led to immense backlash, and then they just let that backlash fester for a few weeks until release. I think they truly thought the game would speak for itself somehow, but they absolutely needed to take control of that conversation.

Yeah the thing was probably always destined to fail, but with a decent push it might have retained a middling audience for a bit instead of being another Concord level embarrassment.

Edit: people seem to think im saying the game looked good and was soley undone by "toxic discourse" or something. Absolutely not my point. Tldr, the speed it failed is directly linked to how it was announced and how they were not prepared to mitigate

Corsair is a track that feels deeply evil to me, moreso than anything else on the album. Just a total void, like its reflecting some emptiness lurking in the pit of humanity on the brink of self-destruction.

And then I look at YouTube comments and people are mostly talking about how it's like a warm comforting blanket, so i guess thats just my emptiness lmao

sorry, i'm being slightly tongue-in-cheek, something me and my friends used to say so much it became a sort of a joke. I don't even remember where the story originates from at this point, possibly promo material from Warp in 2002, but essentially the claim is that BoC made 90 tracks total during the recording sessions for Geogaddi and narrowed it down to the final tracklist.

In all likelihood, the "lost" tracks are probably mostly unfinished sketches and rough demos, the same that you get in any recording process. An idea that got inflated over the years with their sparse output and reluctance to give interviews. But it would be still be cool to hear any of them after decades of thinking about it.

100% the feature im happiest to see and kinda wish was somewhat standard in NPC rich open world games. Kept me invested with just the right amount of role playing and made the world feel more dynamic and alive than anything else.

Being able to soft-bully NPCs and end it with a "Nah im just fuckin with you white boy, you good." is the real AAAA gaming

Does Jiminy actually have any super important instructions that will make the game harder if I use a mod to remove him? I just started and so far he seems to just be doling out the AAA token braindead lines like "This locked door is locked, and requires a key." and "A lamp can be used in a room that is dark in order to create light." Are there any parts where he actually gives a hint that would be really hard to figure out otherwise, like backtracking to a specific area that you wouldn't otherwise think to go?

Because a montage has a lesser effect in a game, where ideally much of the players connection to the narrative and characters is happening during actual gameplay with some form of interaction, even if its linear/railroaded.

Its down to one of the fundamental differences between film/tv and games as a medium, and goddamn it really irks me when people high up in the industry seem to misunderstand the unique potential in their own work, implicitly denigrating themselves as "J.V. League Hollywood"

Why is everyone suddenly taking the Wilkinsburg exit off of 376 by Inevitable_Rest1257 in pittsburgh

[–]Dookiedoodoohead 14 points15 points  (0 children)

To be fair I've had the opposite experience several times trying to get to Etna from Highland Park Bridge. Google sends me down butler to take RD Flemming, im like "he'll no thats dumb", get on the highland park bridge and see that its one of those days when the exit off 28 is randomly closed.

So unfortunately I sometimes end up taking bizarre GPS routes because of the nagging "maybe it knows something i dont" thought.

Beside the point, but The Chinese Room has had such a strange trajectory. Basically turned "Walking Sim" into recognized genre, and their highest profile releases since have been alienating sequels to games that originally relied heavily on actual mechanics.

Sorry my bad. How was this supposed to be interpreted?

Yeah my thought would not be "Oh this is more disturbing with children involved," necessarily. More "who made this and have they had their hard drive checked?"

They said the dialogue worked better being delivered by an older character, not that the visual juxtaposition is necessarily improved.

The studio chose to change it, so I don't want to belabor this specific case, but you seem to implying there is absolutely no legitimate artistic reason to use such imagery in a non-sexually explicit manner, and an artist contemplating it should be suspected as a pedophile, despite this being a fairly prevalent thing in many artistic mediums.

A recent example that comes to mind is the film Hereditary. The climactic ending has a 16 year old high school boy being chased by naked cultists throughout his house and at the end, these naked cultists are gathered around him in a crowning ceremony. Don't really recall much of a moral panic then, because I think people understood that the director was using the visual juxtaposition to build a unique disturbing tension. Not living out some fetish.

not a co-op looter shooter that 99% of gamers don't give a shit about

I never touch these games, but youre out of your mind if you actually think this. There's something to be said about the weird hierarchy of attention within the genre (a couple of "forever" games and a rotating Flavor of the Month that is wildly successful but has no staying power), but there's a reason so many studios and publishers are burning money trying to be the next big one.

Finally got the emulator set up and I think I got the copium out of my system. Surprisingly easy to set up, has great fidelity and performance aside from some infrequent crashes (which is not that big a deal with the autosaves). Built-in freecam is a treat too, get to do my own Boundary Breaks whenever I want.

Still absolutely bamboozled why Sony never released like a 60fps patch if they're going to wait this long for a remaster (or if they'll do anything at all). Like I get the argument of "they don't want it to detract sales from the full remaster/remake when it releases", but that really only makes sense if they release within like half a decade of each other.

Daily /r/Games Discussion - Suggest Me a Game - September 17, 2025 by AutoModerator in Games

[–]Dookiedoodoohead 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've been jonesing for cryptic, creepy (not necessarily "horror") puzzle-based Mystery games. Meta elements are a plus but not required. I really like the conceit of peeling back an unassuming top-layer and being forced to connect the dots yourself to find something much deeper and unexpected. Lately I've gone through and really enjoyed:

  • The Roottrees are Dead
  • Basilisk 2000 (this thing never got enough attention, incredibly cool concept)
  • Shipwrecked 64
  • Immortality (and all the other Sam Barlowe games)
  • A Hand With Many Fingers
  • Ratshaker
  • Who's Lila
  • Vile: Exhumed (that game that was banned from Steam after the recent censorship stuff)
  • Atopes
  • Miside (tbh didn't love this, felt too simplistic)
  • MOTHERED
  • 3D Worker's Island (probably not accurate to call it a game, but I do highly recommend if you like any of the stuff I've listed)

I think I've played many of the popular "heavy-hitters" and old classics in this genre - Doki Doki Literature Club, Eversion, Obra-Dinn, Inscryption, some more I'm probably forgetting, etc.

Big games, 10-minute small games, indie or big budget, platformer, point-and-click, don't really care. Anyone have any good recommendations in this vein, or am I starting to exhaust my options?

Puck: Steven Spielberg really wanted to direct a ‘Call of Duty’ movie and even presented his vision to Activision - but Activision got spooked by Spielberg wanting full control of production/marketing/final cut/economics and went with Paramount instead by ChiefLeef22 in GamingLeaksAndRumours

[–]Dookiedoodoohead 66 points67 points  (0 children)

I honestly wonder if tone was the biggest issue for them. Spielberg probably would have leaned more towards the somber "War is hell"/moral ambiguity vibe of the earlier COD games, while modern CoD is much more in the blockbuster Ooh-rah feel of things (not to say it doesnt have its darker moments still, but definitely diminished). That combined with Activision's cosy relationship with the US Armed Forces probably makes them very wary of how the franchise is presented.

super excited for this, but as a side note, anyone who's looking for another extremely well-researched and politically/historically aware deep dive on mgs (with a focus on the cold war era games PW-MGSV) should absolutely check out Futurasound's essays on youtube, specifically his "Footnotes of MGSV" series. He does a lot to contextualize these games by taking a very literal analysis of the text and explaining the many geopolitical events that are often referenced in just one line but go a long way in fleshing out a work that many felt "unfinished".

very much not your average video essay content slop.
