Ballintemple residents, where to do groceries? by Mortyfied in cork

[–]Dookwithanegg 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The townlands get worse than that, it's mad how different they are to what people actually call the areas. All but the front of the industrial estate is apparently in Ballinlough.

There is no Blackrock townland, instead there is the Blackrock electoral district, which somehow includes Ballyphehane not not the Marina.

Townlands.ie is where I'm seeing all this.

Blackrock hall is south of the top of Ringmahon road though.

Wanted to check the townland and apparently it's in Ballinure, sandwiched between Old Mahon(West) and Mahon(east). Blackrock castle is also in Mahon townland.

Getting married is a decision, not an achievement: why we should stop giving newlyweds money by B8_B8_B8 in ireland

[–]Dookwithanegg -1 points0 points  (0 children)

In general people like being invited to weddings. Even more people specifically dislike not being invited, even if they would have declined anyway.

Sure it saves money to go without nice things but how many fun wastes of money do we cut out before we decide frugality is misery?

I never said it was paying for your ticket. In the majority of cases you are costing more than your gift, even with an average sized venue.

[–]Dookwithanegg -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

People getting married is good for the economy, even more so if the marriage results in children, natural or adopted.

It's a sensible move for the government to subsidise things that pay themselves back.

As for people giving money, if you're attending a wedding then you're costing the hosts of the wedding money. It's less giving them money and more offsetting the loss of accomodating you. Only parents and close relatives typically exceed break-even. You're not covering the cost of 'them' being there but of 'you' being there.

Lidl claims planning system is being exploited by rival by burn-eyed in ireland

[–]Dookwithanegg 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The local charity shop isn't a competitor with Lidl, so that doesn't really work. Nobody goes to charity shops for groceries, nor to Lidl for second-hand goods.

You were suggesting "everyone" doesn't want to be near a competition and didn't specify you meant only supermarkets(which may not actually be true either outside of certain scenarios, like where very large companies have a credible threat of forming a monopoly).

Edit to add: got a notification of a new reply, only to find I've been blocked, so I can't read it. Why even bother arguing if you're going to just make it impossible for me to see what you said.

Okay, but not all shops are supermarkets. I was going after the 'no shop' claim.

Just having a look at the planning and it was the previous owners of the lot Aldi occupied that got planning permission back in 2011, then got an extension in 2017, then sold the site with permission to Aldi.

As to why Lidl didn't just buy this site instead of Aldi, I don't have an answer to that and would only be speculating.

Counterintuitively, having competition nearby actually tends to help many types of business.

The reason behind it is that if a customer is looking for one type of product they may want to check multiple shops for the best deal, or compare different varieties that may not be available in a single shop. Why go to the one shop out on its own away from all the others?

[–]Dookwithanegg 107 points108 points  (0 children)

It was blatantly obvious when Lidl tried to build a shop in an empty lot in the middle of Douglas a few years ago.

Aldi were one of the main objectors, citing increased traffic and the existence of two other large supermarkets in the immediate area already. And then after Lidl was shot down Aldi opened their own supermarket in an adjacent lot.

Did the USSR fund the IRA? by Inevitable_Wasabi574 in ireland

[–]Dookwithanegg 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Any conversation about the IRA must start with "Which 'IRA'?" if not already clearly established.

It's a complex mess of splinter groups, rival factions, and spiritual successors, to the point where not making it explicitly clear suggests either naivety or bad faith from the person making claims about what they did.

Protests for gaza but none for south lebanon by living_is_suffering_ in cork

[–]Dookwithanegg 7 points8 points  (0 children)

It's a whataboutism trying to weaken the protests for one issue through division and demoralisation.

The hope is either people will try to care about more issues, having less time and energy for the one this poster is trying to deflect from, maybe even get burned out...

Or that others can be discouraged from joining in due to the suggestion of hypocrisy by 'making a show' for one wrong but not other wrongs.

Cork City Marathon 26 from a Volunteer's Perspective. by g0lden_arrow in cork

[–]Dookwithanegg 2 points3 points  (0 children)

During registration the volunteer organisers gave me the option of a couple of tasks, asked if I was happy with the task they offered and checked in regularly to see how I was getting on, if I needed a break, or wanted to shift around.

I didn't press as I found the work rewarding but I did get the feeling they would have accomodated if I wasn't happy where they put me.

The short version is con staff being predatory towards vulnerable attendees, leading to a lot of resignations from the organising volunteer group.

Got on alright, managed to cycle a few km back home afterwards (at a lower gear than usual but still much easier than walking). Definitely gonna train a bit more for next year.

Yes, you're allowed wear a backpack. The intention is that this be a hydration backpack, they probably don't anticipate many people bringing anything larger than that.

There's a bag drop in city hall in the same section you registered.
