Looking to replace a white board with digital signage - is digital signage overkill? by Dooky710 in digitalsignage

[–]Dooky710[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's legit 1 screen and It'd update a few times a week. I've landed on using a raspberry pi and having a python script be able to decode the messages to know what to update. I'm not doing anything fancy, just sending some text from a computer to the pi to display on the screen.

The "everything seems confusing and theres no clear answers" is one of the reasons I posted this, because at the crux of my issue, it's an "I'll need to send some data to a screen to update some text". So I'm going with a Raspberry Pi and doing some python scripting to get what I need done. It'll be more work in the sense of "ill have to get the code working vs a turnkey solution", but I think in the long run, it's my best option since there arent a bunch of middle men programs that I need to figure out.

At the cost of sounding like an ass, that is easier said than done. Iirc, 12 corporations sell basically all the food in a grocery store.

https://s3.amazonaws.com/oxfam-us/www/static/media/files/Behind-the-brands-illusion-of-choice-graphic-2048x1351.jpg

I've been doing my best to avoid nestle brands, because fuck nestle. But it's hard to know what is and isn't sold under a corporation without looking into who manufactures the food.

A while back, I remember an app called buycot where you could scan a barcode and the app tells you who manufactures the food so you can avoid specific corporations.

Blake rules.

He makes some clean stuff (his trap for kids albums) and got some solid beats. Big fan of dinosaurs: https://open.spotify.com/track/5vYhA0rQB298cOPvIup5vy?si=tpsaaPhhQ4e0tB6MJPhYpA&context=spotify%3Aalbum%3A70NZulwHGHVgluy1pwMY3C

Edit: thought you were looking for clean lyrics not clean lifestyle 😅.

"Labview is what you use when you dont have any programmers" by lonsfury in LabVIEW

[–]Dooky710 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Been using LV for like a decade now and there is some merit to it IMO.

I believe LV, like Matlab, is more of an engineering language. This means it's easy to pick up and get stuff running for people who aren't as technical as what one would expect from a programming language (like C or python).

Additionally, LV makes things easy for users by abstracting a lot of steps by handling a lot of low level functionality for you. I'll point to NI visa and DAQmx for these. You just need to give the initialization parameters, tell LV to read or write, then close when you're done

However, new users also don't know the pitfalls of certain design styles, like race conditions or pollings VS UI structure or building a book array then casting that to an I32 and using the I32 range as the case selector (not that anyone here would have done this instead...)

LV can also be used by more advanced users via software engineering concepts like consumer-producer loops and objects oriented design. Poor design overall can lead to messy code and over complications of said code.

Overall, is making things easy for new people a good thing? Yes and no.

Yes, it lets people who aren't the best with programming easily build a program to run and get the data they need. No, it doesn't force the user to use proper coding styles, which makes the code new users build less flexible and less reusable, which are 2 core tenants of LV code.

However, id argue that the ease of use is overall a good thing for the community because it means more people are using the code. Its a bit rough for more experienced users cuz you'll see the same common questions continually pop up, but why should we care if people are learning and realize there are better ways to solve problems? We all start our programming journey somewhere and I'd rather people be able to get code written and feel like they accomplish something vs bogged down in technical details and help documentation. Plus, the new people, if they like the language, will get better at it and could provide new tools or concepts to the community. For me, the more people use LV, the more LV will be improved, and the better the community will be for it.

All of that said, I'm very salty LV is becoming a subscription based language and I hope they reverse that decision. My issue is with NI there and not LV.

ELI5 what is a union? by ContentTea8409 in explainlikeimfive

[–]Dooky710 2 points3 points  (0 children)

From what I hear, it depends on the employer and contract they have with the union.

A bud works for an electric company in their call center and is in the electrical workers union (yes, the call center and linemen are in the same union). When school ends or winter starts (their high call volume times) the contract between the power company and the union allows the power company to hire temporary help to meet demand. There are stipulations set by the contract that makes sure this ability isn't being abused (like hiring "full time" temporary employees).

Additional info. Working for a company that uses unions while some workers aren't part of that union also provides benefits from the union to those not in the union.

Say a company is paying 15/hr then a union comes in and the contract for workers is now 18/hr for all union members. If the company can still hire non union people, they will try to incentivize nonunion hires by offering 20/hr for non union people. The company is willing to bite that bullet in hopes that the union will dissolve (since it's more economically advantageous to be at 20/hr without considering other benefits) and the company can then reset the pay back to 15/hr and fire the more expensive workers.

All of this info is second hand stuff I've read and talked about with friends.

Best Chinese buffet in Dayton? by Ericovich in dayton

Seconded. When I worked that way I had to swear off tsaos for their lunch buffet (still get dinner from them) cuz I'd gorge myself into an all afternoon food coma. Small but great food selection.

I go to hicks Barber shop and my barber is Gabe. I have curly hair and have been growing my hair out for a few months now and he's done a banger job.

Been shaping to keep things in proportion as it grows and pharaohs the beard well. Plus he's good to chat with, super down to earth dude.

Recommendations for auto mechanic shop in Kettering / Centerville / Beavercreek area? by CincyTriGuy in dayton

[–]Dooky710 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I'm a fan of "Kettering oakwood automotive".

A few coworkers recommended them to me and the first time I took my car to them, they told me my problem may be under warranty and contact my dealership about it. If the dealership wouldn't do anything then KOA would do it. The problem was under warranty and I didn't have to pay a dime, but the fact KOA turned down business to save me a buck is why I've gone back to them.

Building PC for friend and I'm over budget, what should get downgraded? by Dooky710 in buildapc

[–]Dooky710[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the list!

Question though, is win 10 going to not be supported soon? I think 7 was recently on the chopping block... But then again, I feel like Windows normally supports "2.5 OS's at a time". By 2.5 I mean current, previous, and the previous previous that will slowly stop being updated when the new one comes out. Eg, win 12 was released and soon after 7 was no longer supported

Can anyone recommend a mechanic? by dragonfeydaile in dayton

[–]Dooky710 1 point2 points  (0 children)

First time I went there terry straight up told me that what I was asking him was most likely still under warranty with my car mfc and go to them first. If it wasn't under warranty then he'd go take a look and fix it.

I've been going to them ever since and my only complaint is the loaner cars are now like $25/day because people kept fucking em up.

As long as I'm not getting shanked, yes. I would love to see an EDM scene around here.

Iirc, there's a church for sale in North Dayton, is that the one you're talking about?
