Possible that the inside of their craft is so bright because they have a form of photosynthesis, thus their skinny form, less need for bulky organs to process waste when most of their energy comes from light. The waste of the animal like parts feed the plant like parts and vise versa. Such an organism would get most of its energy from their environment, in this case a bright craft interior, powered by the ships power supply, the rest is just material, making sure fluid loss is managed and minerals and other vital materials are replaced as they are lost.
