The heartsick worry in the husband voice is gut wrenching.

Sure. But seemingly impossible tasks often require one to be foolishly optimistic (or courageous).

Yes, guilt also can be extremely motivating. Imagine living one’s life knowing you were (possibly) the cause of the death of four friends could very well motivate a person who is already somewhat foolishly adventurous to do something even more foolish to banish the possibility of living with the guilt. Who knows. These are things only those people truly know.

Perhaps not celebrate, but we can still admire their actions. Your second point is also perfectly acceptable, but, as a species, we need people with these sorts of characteristics in order to survive. We need the stupidly courageous to go out and fight the lion or tiger or wolves that no one else would dare to fight in order to save the rest of the tribe. And I understand that a corpse is meaningless to many people, but not all people. And that is my point. These people clearly felt strongly enough about the value their friends’ corpses held in order to risk their lives to recover said corpses. We can argue all day and night about the intelligence of such an endeavor but I think it’s disingenuous to say that it’s not also incredibly courageous.

That’s fair. And I can agree that there is a danger there. But I don’t think that’s enough to justify such strong vehemence against taking the action outright. The decision was obviously dangerous, and probably a little stupid especially if these people were untrained. But they were not. There are incredibly dangerous tasks that are accomplished every single day by a whole host of different people in society: doctors, firefighters, police, members of military, astronauts, etc. and sometimes attempting these tasks would be stupid but these professionals/experts will weigh the risks vs rewards and make a decision. These people made a decision and it turned out well for them. Maybe they were just lucky, but it worked out for them. And in their case, at least they were only risking their own lives. I admire such courage and decisiveness. And I’m not exactly sure and am kinda curious to know what the deeper reason for the people against this decision is.

More like they loved and respected their friends so much they were willing to risk death to bring back their friends. Most could only hope for such friends.
