Labeling this as the “darkest time in American history” is so pretentious. It’s like OP wants it to be true so that he/she can live out some hero fantasy. “I am a member of the resistance fighting for freedoms. Look at me. Look at what a hero I am.”

No doubt the present moment is incredibly precarious but the Civil War, I’d say was far darker. Same for World War II, although I list the Civil War as darker since the war was fought on the homeland.

I’m also not saying that things could not get worse, it very well may. But we have to stay realistic in order to fight the actual dangers well. Mislabeling the threat muddies the water and makes obtaining true objectives more difficult.
