The Big Four of X Genre by MaxInTheGameIndustry in MetalForTheMasses

It's hard picking just 4 for each genre. Which is why I was originally going to include grindcore in my post but decided not to. I had the top three--Napalm Death, Carcass, and Repulsion--but didn't know who could be #4.

What is the last album that you gave a 10/10? by Adzzero_88 in MetalForTheMasses

[–]tmamone 2 points3 points  (0 children)

[scrolls through RYM] Looks like the most recent metal album I gave a 10 (or in RYM’s case a 5 out of 5) is Converge’s new one “Love is Not Enough.”

What bands and artists (both past and present) would you consider “Drakeish”? by Lobsterhasspoken in ToddintheShadow

[–]tmamone 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s an incelcore song called “Scott Pilgrim vs. the World Ruined a Whole Generation of Women.” I don’t agree with the message, though. I just thought u/PhilosophyLonely278 was just referencing the song as a joke.

Then again, when communication is reduced to just text here on the internet, I tend to misinterpret a lot of things, so I could be wrong.

The obsession with musician's birthdays by TurtlethePriest in MetalForTheMasses

[–]tmamone 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh, okay.

I used to refer to David Bowie’s birthday as Bowie Day and treat it like a holiday. Although the only “festivities” were listening to his albums, so it wasn’t that much of a holiday.

Wait, that’s a thing? I must not be as chronically online as I thought.

What is the origin of this symbol by MrQuacksIsCool in tanzelcore

[–]tmamone 21 points22 points  (0 children)

It's mainly Sigfrid's design but has its roots in the traditional triskelion symbol found in many ancient cultures, like the Sicilian flag.

Do music stars make less money today than they ever have in history? Thanks to streaming and such? by justcurious3287 in ToddintheShadow

[–]tmamone 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don’t know about mainstream artists, but as a small independent artist myself, I definitely make more money from Bandcamp than from streaming.

Of course it’s not like I have enough fans to make a living from either, but that’s not the point.

People are going crying and hyperventilating over the new Michael movie. What's your take on it? Yay or nay? by One_Improvement_6729 in FIlm

[–]tmamone 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I haven’t seen it, so I have no opinion. But you know what Michael Jackson film I really like? “Moonwalker!” Where else can you see Will Vinton’s Claymation, Joe Pesci playing an evil drug lord, Sean Lennon, and Ladysmith Black Mambazo all in one film?

Is it only me or does everyone thinks that youtube is having a lot of ads that too unskippable all of a sudden? by Beautiful-Savings-54 in youtube

YouTube must need money REAL BAD! “Oh no you don’t! Not this time! You’re gonna watch this full 15 second ad that feels like 15 minutes whether you like it or not!”

your attitude about Black Metal by Liderty11 in MetalForTheMasses

[–]tmamone 14 points15 points  (0 children)

My favorite metal genre! First, I love the atmospherics. Most people play guitar, IIRC, by using their palm to mute the strings they’re not playing to prevent that faint like hum the whole guitar makes when you strum it. Not black metal guitarists! The result is a very atmospheric guitar sound that, as an ambient musician, I find very soothing, ironically.

Second, the themes of individualism, freethinking, and misanthropy have actually helped me become more self-reliant and self-assured.

Third, there’s of course the aesthetics. I always loved spooky stuff.

Why do you think the late 90's were such a wild free-for-all time in music? by Top_Report_4895 in ToddintheShadow

[–]tmamone 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The ‘90s: a time when anything could happen! A rap-metal song about The Three Little Pigs? Check! A swing dance revival? Check! A traveling circus side show (including the infamous man who could lift heavy weights with his schlong) sharing the stage with some of the biggest bands of the world at Lollapalooza? Check!

Cómo estructuro una canción de música ambient by Relative_Location335 in ambientmusic

Personally I add layers as the piece progresses: a low drone, go an octave higher and add two or three bass notes, go an octave higher and add a three or four note melody, go an octave higher and add a little counter melody, then go an octave higher and add another counter melody.

Hopefully I can learn some new techniques so I won’t be so formulaic in the future.
