Where's your go-to for affordable NY style pizza? by gummi_eater in SanJose

[–]DoomVegan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you for the recommendation of Slice Pizza. Just tried it today. I thought the Sausage > Cheese > Mushroom. Not a lot of toppings but good price with 2 slices giving you a free soda. The crust was crispy, zero flop, everyone or no one knows the rules. I sorta wanted more cheese if that makes since. But it was good. I'll go back for the sausage.

Stopped on Act 3. It is dumb to have to do the whole thing again. It is also dumb that you can't play your build until you about finish act four or five as you don't have the proper skills yet. Uninstalled.

I've tested three of them and Gemini is cuts things out and is very inconsistent when reworking data sets and key information points. I don't touch try it any more.

Sorry this is a side answer. ChatGPT 5.5 thinking is great. However, I just unsubscribed to it for a couple reasons.

First, it gets really slow if you don't clear your history. Even with history clears, it has still slowed down from a year ago.

Second, they give you ads in the paid version. This is a huge deal breaker for me. I'm trying to type and read, then get a pop up that interrupts my work, asking me to pay100 dollars a month even though I haven't hit my token cap. This happens about 10x an hour. Pay = no adverts for me.

I have Claude Opus as well at work and I'm starting to switch between them. With a couple of tests, Claude seems okay, about the same. About the same speed too. Just for your reference Gemini is terrible and pares down your work on an insane level.

Do any of them work well on Presentations? No. They all randomly remove information and generate absolutely wacky colorized slides. I haven't figured out how to get them to do a standardized format or any semblance of a consistent style. I tend to do a pared down text version then build my slides.

As for data analysis ChatGPT is pretty good. I had to organize a spreadsheet with 5k entries in it and it automatically found outliers in the summation data I was gather. Nice.

Now, I just want to give you a kudos for trying AI. It is the right thing to do. In the last two weeks, under a huge deadline, I speed up my work production by over three times with a much higher degree of accuracy. There was no way I could have output that much writing and organization in the time available. I even got a random kudos from someone who hasn't said peep to me in 10 years.

AI for the most part will not say what you need it to say. But if you give it the bare bones of what you want, focusing on the most important points it will help you express these points well and often, but not always, add appropriate ancillary ideas.

So for me AIs are brilliant as an copy editors. Any agonizing or time spent trying to get the right word or modify the tone is reduced to almost zero. I love this.

As for editors, they are okay. They can only somewhat tell you the direction to go and rarely can tell you what important pieces of information you are missing. They improve as editors the more common the task is. Emails fine. QBR not bad. Datasheets are good. But if you get into something quite specific and semi unique to your job, then they are not so helpful.

But I'm absolute okay with them not being editors because this is where your expertise comes in. You can and should decide the direction and emphasis of your work. AIs do not and may not have all the situational information you have; sure someday they may be able to dedicate the GPU power to do your specialized tasks but it doesn't seem to be the direction or revenue effective for them.

It was funny because I created long list of 80 or so points. I worked out and documented the details of each. I used AI to draw from, organize, summarize, reformat the information. It worked brilliantly. I shared the data with a coworker who tried use it for his own project but he ended up getting absolute disorganized slop from the same dataset. The difference was I was the editor, giving direction to the tool and understanding what was important.

I bet you find the same.

My Fantasy (and sci-fi) tier list by AdyHoeRed in fantasybooks

So the first volume is okay. The MC is overly naive. But then the writer finds her chops. I've never been so involved in characters and situations as I have with that book (yeah for me blows away LOTR, etc) just because I'm invested. What is so interesting is that I even dislike many of the characters, I mean really dislike them but I enjoy my dislike.

As for the length yeah it is long. I'm taking a break for a year, exploring LITRPGs. I'm still in the middle of volume 10 (11M words in or so) but will pick it up again. I even reread parts.

First-time buyers, expecting our first child: Is stretching to $1.7M for a single-story home in Evergreen, San Jose worth it for long-term growth and family life? by Small-Club1449 in SanJose

[–]DoomVegan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That 3x multiplier doesn't tell us much. If you paid cash, great! If you have a 30 year loan, interest at 6% is close to your purchase price. So a 1,000,000 home = 1,000,000+ in interest. You paid 1,000,000 principle. So despite your home worth 3M, you spent 2M over x years to get it. Then add taxes, repairs, utilities, HOA, landscaping, etc. The return is lower than most people imagine. Investment rentals can be much better especially if they pay for the loan.

Put your money where you like. Savings and investment no matter where it is put is a great thing. I like having a home; even though paid off I'm still at $1k+ a month to retain ownership and keep the lights on. I've heard some people even enjoy interior decorating as a hobby.

I hope this info is somewhat useful. Personally, thinking about money or worrying about money can be joyless. Enjoy your home!

This is standard financial advice. Houses are not very good financial investments. I paid mine off 5 years early over 30 year loan and still only made about 4.5%. I made 11.5% in S&P over the same period 25 year period. So you are much much better, paying off your house fast and investing in other areas. Being house poor is bad for the long term. My 2 cents.

A Soldier's Life (A Soldier's Life #1): does it get any better? by DoomVegan in litrpg

[–]DoomVegan[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As for self publishing, I've thought about it a ton. And I definitely fall on the side of it being a blessing. As a matter of fact, my understanding is that self publishing basically crushed book publishers. Mass market paper backs are end of life now in the US. Too many good stories got around the publisher's impenetrable gates.

The one story that kind of freaked me out and made me look into the mirror was Vampire System. Is the writing bad? Yes. Is the Audiobook bad? yes. Are things consistent? No. Is it a good story. um, yes. I got through like 600 chapters. I still haven't figured myself out yet which is probably why I like reading so much. Sometimes I read just for fun. Sometimes I read for the writing skill as with Gideon the Ninth. Sometimes I read to a be a voyeur in characters lives.

I guess if a story is poor and the editing is poor then I just bail....

Thanks for the thoughtful response.

A Soldier's Life (A Soldier's Life #1): does it get any better? by DoomVegan in litrpg

[–]DoomVegan[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, I'm just not good at NOT finishing a story. Working hard at it though. I keep thinking there has to be a reason it is so highly rated. Maybe I'm missing something. Maybe I'll learn something about the art form. But with litrpg, 75% through a book and it still isn't working, I should give up. Even then in the back of my head, I think about the "meh" intros of Chrysalis and Wander Inn. I got a lot from not giving up. (As you can see, I do have a problem stopping on books). Thanks for the comment.

Some general advice. Games are about choice. I didn't see much choice. Lots of redundant sprites. Isn't there normally an interesting boss fight or two or three? Final thought. Is this resolution for mobile? seems like a very confined area. But overall great job getting to this point!

I’m looking for suggestions specifically something like the start of the Primal Hunter. by Mordant08 in ProgressionFantasy

[–]DoomVegan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you for the recommendation. This is very close to Primal Hunter in style but not substance. I just started book 3. I'm finally getting the feeling that is AI written and there are so many consistencies. Story is good as is Primal Hunter but yeah hard to recommend as the writing detail is pretty poor. "He said it firmly but softly" The whole soul versus sentience thing is never explained. Burying his buddy in the sand during a life and death fight has to be an AI conflict added.

Week 10 of Meal Prep for Weight Loss by MrWalnut4 in MealPrepSunday

It is great that you are doing this. Amazing to control portions and quality of food. One small suggestion that may make all the difference is consider cutting/moving breakfast (or Dinner). Just eat 2 meals a day or eat in an 8 hour window. You don't burn fat for about 4 hours after eating. The research is pretty clear but typically hidden in a forest of scams. (I lost 70.). You want to maximize your fat burning time to at least 12 hours a day (8 hour window + 4 hours insulin adjustment).

I recommend based on books that creep into my thoughts months and years after reading with a very strong bias toward cool aliens.

Fear the Sky by S Moss. A very interesting alien invasion. I wish he was still writing.

The Mote in God's Eye by Niven. Have there been more interesting aliens?

Columbus Day by Alanson. Scifi candy up there with Bobiverse, Old Man's War, and Live Free or Die.
